I think we're going to see more and more emphasis on building Quiet Homes. We have some much noise in our lives, I think spending some time/effort on sound proofing special areas of our house will pay big dividends in the future. In this video you'll see a special noiseproofing compound called Green Glue used to abate the noise between bedrooms in a new home my company is building. It's a detailed install video utilizing cellulose, double layers of sheetrock, Green Glue, Acoustical Sealant, and Hilti Putty Pads.

UPDATE AUG 2013: I spoke with the client of this project recently and 2+ years later this soundproofing job is working great! Remember with any soundproofing job you need to follow manufacturer's specs precisely. The smallest mistake in a soundproofing job can negate all your efforts. I'm a fan of Green Glue, but it must be installed according to spec! When the job is done you'll have a very quiet room. Best, Matt

Thanks for the comments. In all soundproofing jobs you must follow the manufacturer's label precisely to get the rated soundproofing effectiveness. The Green Glue labor is much higher than Quietrock but material costs are less. It's really a trade off between material & labor costs. Best, Matt

Appreciate the comments and tips. This was indeed 5/8" rock. I only use 5/8" SR in my houses. Great tip on the adjustable boxes and laying the SR flat along with a Quick Loader. Best, Matt

@AtticFoil Excellent question! In order of priority I would do (1) layer of Quietrock/Greenglue on the side of the wall with the least penetrations (outlets, fixtures, etc) and be sure to use acoustical putty on the penetrations it does have, then do fiberglass or cellulose insulation, then if space permits do staggered studs, then either acoustical clips which is like an isolation hat channel OR a second layer of Quietrock/GreenGlue. Both products are very good and if installed per specs will provide their stated STC's. I like QR if you are concerned about thickness or if you are bidding the work. I like GG because it's typically less expensive, but it is more dependent on a detailed installer doing the GG install per spec. It's also thicker with 2 layers of Sheetrock which is good in my opinion to add mass. But, that's more labor and is heavy if you are doing a DIY project. Hope this helps, Matt

@AtticFoil Thanks! I looked on both companies websites and our exact assembly wasn't listed. I believe both would give an STC of roughly 50ish. That means that a radio at 70 db in one room would sound like 20 db in the adjacent room. VERY good! I like quietrock because there is less chance of installer error, but this Green Glue is nice in that it's a lower cost solution and is potentially easier to source. Both are excellent sound proofing methods. Matt Risinger

Thanks for the breakdown. My concern with Greenglue regardless of the cost differential is that the installer has to take care to ensure the glue pattern is correct to get the intended results. If QuietRock is the same cost I would go with that. Matt

@TheObservationDeck Tough Question! Quietrock takes away many of the bungled install issues that can occur with Green Glue. If you are doing it yourself (or you really trust the crew) and cost is an issue I'd say Green Glue. If you want performance and are willing to pay a bit more then Quickrock is tough to beat. Matt - a couple of comments. First, adjustable electrical boxes should be used with double-rock installations to aid with finish electrical work. Second, I didn't hear this in your video, but 5/8" sheet rock should be used to maximize the performance with incremental increase in cost over 1/2". Third, installation goes significantly faster if the drywall is laying flat on the floor and the Green Glue "quick loader" is used. So all these increased labor costs are negligible in reality.

@MattRisinger Would you do this on BOTH sides of the wall with this method if space/budget permits? Where do you reach the law of diminishing return? Also, If you were doing just ONE side, would you do the "noisy" or the "quite" side of the wall? Can you recommend a good "soundproof" type door or door treatment for for an in-home workspace. @waterdoor I can image the shipping was really pricy. That's one reason I like the Green Glue application, you're only shipping a case of caulking rather than hundreds of pounds of special sheetrock. Just using two sheets of cheap drywall and this special sandwich of Green Glue seems like a much easier way logistically to achieve sound proofing. -Matt

Matt I was going to use SilentFX from Certainteed on my project, but the shipping was crazy expensive and we found out about it so late in the project that it would of delayed the drywall. It has the green glue already applied and is much cheaper than quietrock. We decided to go with channels and R-13.

Matt, why didn't you use isolation slips + metal resilient channels? Becasue, from what I can tell, the drywall is still mechanically coupled to the frame and isn't 'floating'.

roxul is r15 and quiet rock they sell in lowes at seventy dollars.or double wall stagging seams roxul both.5/8s rock and glad to see the quiet putty

@lastusertosignup Excellent question. I've not heard of that method. My only concern would be moisture sensitivity of that assembly and would it be able to withstand point loads (i.e. piano legs). I'm probably not qualified to comment however. MR

I have 2 quick questions! I'm going to be doing 1/2 in. osb plywood and then 5/8in Drywall on top of for my music studio in my basement. 1.) I'm just wondering if Green Glue is still effective when put between drywall and osb plywood? 2.) Also, do you need to seal the 2nd layer of wall with the acoustic sealant or just the 1st layer?

Does this application cost effective ($) enough for lower DB performance? Versus a resilient wall steel studs w/ sound isolation clips + foam core/insulation to walls + sealing all seams. Is that USG standard drywall and not green board in a wet area? Looks to be a nightmare for any repipe/rewire work if needed for reaching engineering lifespan change overs. Cool idea.

Hey Matt, I'm liking your videos. If I double sheetrock but use a silicon caulk instead of green glue, would that add semi-reasonable soundproofing without the $25/tube that Green Glue costs? (Would it be better than just double sheetrock alone?)

+Trevor Nielson I wouldn't waste the time/effort on the silicone caulk. See my cheap tricks video. Double SR is a good idea even if you can't afford the green glue as it'll add mass. In the end, you've only got one shot to do this soundproofing, if you screw it up it's costly to rip/replace. The Green Glue is pretty cheap in the long run for a very good product. Best, Matt

I found a product called serenity from a company called 360 coatings, the stuff is awesome! I have used green glue, higher 5/8 gyp board and many other sound reduction products and the serenity coating is awesome for us. Have you ever tried it? And what are your thoughts about it??

I am trying to order the Acoustical Caulk in the orange & white tube. Are the two products shown in the video the same or different? The tubes shown in your video appear to be different. One green & black and the other one orange & white. The companies I am ordering from say they are the same product even though their website list two different product descriptions and images that match your video. However, they only send the 'greenglue noise proofing sealant' then say it's the same. Help!

We have lath and plaster, can we put the dry wall & green glue on top of the plaster, will this work? Or do we need another layer of dry wall on the plaster and then the green glue and another piece of dry wall? The tenants can't stand hearing their neighbor thru the walls. Does it have to be 5/8" dry wall, does thinner work? Thanks for the help.

GG behind DIY plank wall? I am planning to install strips of 1/4 plywood on existing sheetrock to look like shiplap. Would applying Green Glue to the back of the planks 8" x 72" x .25 decrease sound traveling from an adjoining room? There will be intentional nickel size gaps. Would the gaps compromise the whole job? Would the Luuan plywood be so thin it would be ineffective. Would the Green Glue be too thick causing my thin fake plank to pucker? I am going to do this project anyway just for looks, i was just hoping green glue would decease sound travel. Thanks,.

Matt, Thanks for the video. Which insulation do you think would be better for soundproofing. Roxul "safe and sound" batts or dense pack cellulose. I haven't had any luck finding comparisons of the two in regards to sound proofing or STC ratings.

Roxul is a scam. According to the (Canadian) NRC report on the matter (IR 693), the best performance from batt type insulation is found with conventional fiberglass or Owens Corning "Quiet Zone" fiberglass... if available in your market. When you increase the density of the fill material you actually DECREASE your STC levels. I have been doing these kinds of installs using double layer/conventional acoustical sealant for years now. Green Glue is the new answer to the problem. It's the bulletproof solution...IMO. I am currently advocating for a loose fill cellulose for wall/ceiling fill material, using the BIBS system. This offers 100% coverage in stud bays with mechanical "issues". The loose fill is blown to R35 (in an 11 7/8" Tji joist depth) to provide proper separation from the underside of the subfloor sheathing. Batt insulation can't compete with this kind of continuous coverage. The REAL difference is in the board though. 5/8 Type "X" as the first layer and 1/2" CD/SR as the second. I can shoot wall plates with Yellow loads in the basements of the duplexes I'm currently doing and you can't hear a thing in the other side...Truth. The fill material in these is R12 23 fiberglass, on a staggered stud wall.Board as described above.

Thanks for the video Matt. I am finishing my basement and I'm trying to figure out the best way to soundproof the ceiling so I won't hear noise through the floors. First I'm going to insulate really well. Then I don't know what to do from there Option one-RC channel or Sound clips and regular 5/8 inch sheet rock. Option two-1/2 inch sheet rock, green glu, another sheet of 1/2 sheet rock. Option three- sound clips and 5/8 quiet rock. There are unlimited options. What should I do? There is so much conflicting information out there and products that are expensive. There is no way of knowing what is worth the money and what is not. Please Help!

Hi and thankyou for your videos. After applying the sealant on the seams of the 2nd layer of drywall, do i have to wait a certain time before mudding the joints or applying house wrap over that 2nd layer of drywall. I'm doing a job that also includes an exterior wall which will have timber cladding (hence the house wrap part of the question).

How can green glue reduce sound if the sound doesn't even pass through it? You can use any other caulking adhesive that cost 3 times less that will glue 2 sheets of drywall together. Am I missing something here??

Yes you are. Caulking dries. Green glue stays flexible forever. That's how it dampens sound, converting the sound wave energy into heat energy, by staying viscous and decoupling the panels as a bonus.

Hilti is so expensive is it that much better than a can of spray foam around the outlet boxes? And as you are having the walls sprayed is it necessary in that application as far as cost effectiveness?

+Douglas Thompson Yes, it's MUCH better. No comparison. If you want to do it right, use a Putty Pad and the Hilti is the best model I've seen of those.

Can you use green glue with cement board on floors? I am trying to insulate an existing floor in a second floor condo without pulling up the sub floor. Pulling the sub floor requires HOA approval. Work done above the sub-floor can be done "on my own." -- I'm looking at layers: #1. cleaned & smoothed subfloor with cracks between boards and around the edges where the floor meets the drywall sealed with noiseproofing sealant. #2 green glue on bottom side of cement board using the green glue instead of thinset. #3 EXTRA THICK carpet padding #4 carpet -- I'll replace the existing hollow core bedroom door with a solid core door adjusted for the added few mm of height added to the floor

You can...in fact one of the ways they market this product is by doing exactly that. With the only exception that they use it between subfloor plywood and studs. Would use less tubes too. Probably more to reduce squeaky floors but if sound reduction is your only goal ...go for it

How would you soundproof an already existing wall which has two electrical outlets on the sheetrock. The rest of that wall has been built of fireproof materials to accommodate a woodstove which I never added.

The installer said he was using a little over 2 tubes per sheet but covered less than a 1/4 sheet with the first tube so that information is not accurate. Also based on Green Glue's website it looks like this applicator was light on the amount of Green Glue used. In my opinion labor will eat you alive with this application.

1. 1/4 inch beed of 100% silicone down the studs for the first layer of drywall 2. Caulk the joints & outlets as shown in the video 3. 100% silicone sandwiched between the first & second sheet & dont overlap the joints as shown 4. 1/3 the cost and the same sound dampening effect green glue $15 a tube, 100% Sicone $5 and it stays flexible just the same

No, you'll only be using the putty pad on the back side of the box. You are covering the box/wires and sealing it to the sheetrock. The front face is untouched. The electrician will never know you've used a putty pad on this box from the front side. Best, Matt

Are you driving the screws all the way on the 2nd layer or just to the next sheet? I presume not all the way. Then what is the screw off pattern for the top sheet? Standard?

Sheetrock won't hold a screw so you'll need to use longer screws on the second sheet to secure it to the studs. Standard screw pattern. Thanks, Matt

+Curtiss Harris they do transmit sound but the green glue layer helps absorb a lot of it. The only way to completely eliminate vibration is with resilient channels

Resilient channels are what should be used for sound proofing, screws through both sheets transmit the sound waves and couple the panels.... like shooting yourself in the foot after all the rest of that expensive work.

If this (hanging of 2 x time the sheet rack) cost less than using the acoustic sound proof type sheet rack.? this seams too time consuming to me . However it might be more coast effective for contractors. .,,, but all good ty for the info.

Quiet rock here in California at my 2 local dealers is $74 per 5/8" 4x8' sheet. So yeah it's a lot more cost effective to just double hang.

yes but resistant does not mean 100% mold proof , anything can mold if it remains wet long enough

I forgot to mention the plaster has paint on it. I have one wall that we put dry wall over the plaster and it didn't help the sound proofing, can I add another thinner layers of dry wall to that with the green glue on it, the dry wall was painted, would that work? I am confused about whether I need two layers of 5/8" over the plaster, need help asap. thanks.

ephoricmonk....You are completely skipping over the fact that using double 5/8" with Green Glue is SIGNIFICANTLY more mass than a single sheet of QuietRock. QuietRock also uses their own viscoelastic compound which, although comparable, doesn't test as well in the lab with limiting STC. And your quoted price for QuietRock is for the absolute cheapest available model. You would have to buy the QuietRock 535 at a minimum which approaches $80 per sheet.

Why not just use Roxul insulation? No cellulose or 2nd sheetrock layer required.

Ugggh!! I don't like that messy cellulose stuff at all. PLUS... that stuff isn't a soundproof material...AND if it is made up of paper, that would mean it's not fireproof. Why not just use Roxul Safe N' Sound for the soundproofing? And it's fireproof.

LOL Hilarious to see how many crackpots in the comment sections are desperately trying to convince the public having dry shredded paper in your walls is a great idea. Just ask yourself if you want to risk the lives of your family with whatever chemicals they treated that shredded paper with to make it "fire resistant." hi i live in ny and i have a problem with my noisy neighbor above me. Im renting in a studio apartment and it has finished ceiling. can i apply the green glue and double sheetrock? thanks

Im glad I see hardworking Latinos aways doing the actual work on these construction 🔨 videos and I wonder why our leaders say that we are gang members and whatnot. This guy is probably just trying to earn a honest living.
