We got asked an interesting question about vests and it turned into some basic sourcing advice for anyone wanting to do an 18th century Highlands historical impression.
Highland dress, especially on the casual "for fun" end can be very flexible and creative.

As a reenactor, I suggest the Osprey Press 'Men At Arms' series... Especially the books on the Jacobite Forces (118), 18th Century Highlanders (261) and Colonial American Troops 1610-1774 (3)

The Osprey series are really hit and miss, and the secondary source artwork often leaves something to be desired with speculative evidence. Can have good information, but I would say use with caution based on my experiences. Compare to contemporary sources and actual extant finds when possible.

In Outlander, Jamie did in fact wear the kilt with just the vest, but he did only leave the plaid tucked and hanging, not over the shoulder.

St. Kildale kilts in Glasgow, Scotland. Early and late 18th century waistcoats and jackets. Beautiful

18th Century has two different style Waist coats. The F&I style is longer down to the thigh and usually is laced up the back. The Rev War style is shorter just past the waist and is usually no lacing in the back. Sleeved waistcoats were more for F&I.

@@WickedKingLycoan EXTREME innaccuracies. if your a reenactor, buy something tailored to you by someone who is accurate. many times you can get a completely handsewn, accurate, tailored garment for cheaper than townsends

I would go barefoot and bare legged, with my great kilt, I'd wear a poet shirt or like a linen tunic, with a waistcoat you made from a deer skin. If you got enough leather you could make some moccasins and maybe take some tartan fabric, cut it on the bias for some leggings.

Townsend offers a sleeved waist coat. They are cheap and not the best historical material. there is also Samson Historical, for 18th century.

Why not Townsends?
@MrAbles-wh5uy
@MrAbles-wh5uy Год назад
@@WickedKingLycoan I think the main issue why many progressive reenactors are moving away from them is due to their overly generic cuts of clothing that aren't entirely accurate to more specific time periods within the respective century that Townsend predominantly covers. Plus machine stitching and artificial dyes, which I don't personally care about as much, but others in the community do.
