One of the most disappointing things about the new South Africa is the deterioration of the country's urban cores. The Johannesburg CBD used to be a safe place where you did not have to worry about becoming the victim of violence, black or white. It is disappointing that the new South Africa cannot value its old urban cores. Sandton's architecture and layout pales in comparison to the old Johannesburg CBD.
@Thabo Sethipa You people don´t "sort out the problem", you make the problems!!!You simply CAN NOT HANDLE western technology! You have your one "Style", I don´t blame you for that, but you won´t admit, that the western way is not your way. And belive me, I tried to teach practical engineering in Jo´burg, it was a waste of time. In the beginning I was very motivated, after 4 years I was disillusioned. There is no way you can reach a level like 1984. NO WAY, but reality is nothing for you people
Loved the old images of Pretoria, I lived in Arcadia in 1984, riding every day on the road below the Union Buildings to get to work. Was quicker than stopping at all the robots on Pretorius street or Church street. Thanks for sharing.
I was living in Pretoria in 1984 I was 15 and was in Pretoria Boys High. Lovely time and lovely micro city. I live in the U.K. now still miss SA at times.
So, the matter is much more complex. The fact that the NP and its apartheid were wrong and destined to end... does not mean that the ANC and its totalitarian government would be the solution... Just rethink and analyze... The country has a lot of potential and has already lost almost 80 years in crises and extreme partisanship. It is past time for South Africa to seek a path of true balance. May this good and rare record be an example of learning. The heyday of South Africa's segregationist regime occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. And with an economic boom that benefited the whole country, the ENTIRE country, again. However, after the fall of friendly countries like Mozambique and Rhodesia, in addition to the end of the gold-dollar standard in the international monetary system in 1971, the country's economy was severely affected and did not return to the excellent performance of before, entering a chronic crisis. in the 80s. Not to mention the definitive rise in the price of oil (OPEC crisis in 1973), on which South Africa has always depended. Understanding the moment of change and adapting was crucial, but the NP government at that time missed the opportunity to reform the country. Therefore, it would no longer be possible to maintain a police state for so long, with defense spending growing exponentially, as well as the weight of international sanctions. In this sense, the end of the USSR in 1991 helped a lot to make possible the transition to post-apartheid without civil war in the AFR. From the South and beyond, Namibia can be saved by giving it independence without it falling like Angola and Zimbabwe, for example. May the Boer country rise again and become a land of prosperity, greetings from Brazil.
Great video!!! As a little boy I moved to Pretoria in 1982 and this brings back so many amazing memories!!!! thank you. For me there was no politics at the age of 7 so I enjoy this purely for the memories.
I grew up in South Africa and my dad worked for the gold and coal mining industry until he retired in 1972. He was the compound/hostel manager for many years and spoke both Xhosa and Zulu fluently. We lived in Randfontein and Witbank and I trained as a general nurse and midwife in Pretoria in the 1960s. Walked many kms around the Union Blds and Church Square! Often did train trips betw Pretoria and Jhb and Witbank so this video brings back loads of memories! Moved to Sweden in 1986 and last visited SA in 1995! Pretoria had changed but I still got around on foot and by bus and never felt afraid! ☆♡☆
Beautiful record, nostalgic 80s. Regarding the context of the time, well... the government failed (very) to insist on an unsustainable ''separation'' model, especially after the fall of the gold standard and the revolts in neighboring countries after Portugal left, not to mention the fall of Rhodesia in 1980. Defense spending was exploding and the South African state's ability to finance itself was collapsing, and Western boycotts only made the situation worse. The national party should have carried out an electoral reform before 1983 and more comprehensively, it is a fact, even recognizing that there was an action by them in that decade to improve. It can be researched, there is it on the wiki, as gradually the tensions of the old regime, the separation laws were being removed little by little, in 83, 85, 86, but there was no time, and in the referendum of 92 the country's destiny was defined. Reforms started late and there was no time to organize the country before ''passing the baton''... perhaps many hidden interests were at play too... and far beyond the South African nation, anyway. May this beautiful country achieve a good future, if it is still possible.
@Armo Moose No they did not need a pass in 1984, it was abolished way back in 1976. 4 million blacks worked with 1 million whites in Johannesburg everyday. I walked the inner city streets of Joburg at midnight with my teenage sister. There was blacks but in general there was nothing for them to do there. We got along just fine with all races.
There weren’t that many and you see the smart, educated and law abiding ones walking around in this video!… What you don’t see are the thugs, criminals, rapists, etc who were kept out and kept in check!… If you like seeing them, then just go to modern day South Africa!
Tokelo, that is still part of Western Cape, possible close to Worcester. This trip was from Cape Town. I've done this trip from Jhb to Cape Town numerous times by train. Great experience. Last trip was Apr 2018

@@andrewdutoit9571 I am not saying the current government is good at all I know they are bad I know they are theives we all know that, but with all that being said the apartheid goverment was only working for one group of people, if u white u might like it because it worked for u, but try to put your self in people of coulour shoes than u will understand what I'm saying, the country looked good and they were not many crimes and all of that I agree with, but not everyone was included and that was the problem.
@@andrewdutoit9571 if u follow the news there is a outcry in the UK aswell, I'm not just talking about the South African whites, this type of things happened in many places, the French did the same thing in Africa in my openion the French are the worst when it comes to this because they didn't build anything all they is take and take from the continent and they still doing it now, the same thing the British did and the Americans, my point is u can't live like a king and the people live like dogs and expect it to last forever, even this corrupt ANC they going to fall it's just a matter of time.
@@andrewdutoit9571 I don't think anyone can say the whites didn't contribute a lot to south africa, if anyone saying it means they don't know what they talking about, to me I think the white in SA built a very beautiful place, but I think they mad the mistake of excluding other races from it, and that helped the ANC with their agenda, I think RIP deklerk should given the other races their rights to vote and work and buy properties and he could stayed president of the country instead of being stubborn and at the end just handing it over, obviously the west want part here we all know the west of they can't get a piece of the pie than they put sanctions or invade your country.
🎉is not that am blessed to became a pure Pretorian born nd breed here is a gift🎉❤I didn't visit here I stay here✌🏾🙏🏾👏🏿😁I love my home da reality of south Africa beings here 🥰🤩😎
