One of the best trained army’s in the world at the time. Could’ve taken the Russians head on and won easily. The technology and the strategy was unmatched, yet they couldn’t be supported by NATO knowingly due to apartheid. Still they proved to be one of the best militaries in the world and no one would ever know
@@jacobleonard4651😂😂is it a joke or something didn't you people lost in zimbabwe, Angola, Mozambique, the only time you would have won conflicts would be with unarmed protestors
I'm 48 now..I missed serving by one year..to every single one of you that went before..we need you now..all of you between 50 and 70..you know so much more..teach me
@@davidmusyimi2994 sad? better than what the imperialists have been doing in africa since the 1800 century until they pulled out and continued to exploit africa through private companies.
SADF had a very strange form of apartheid, there where no mixed units, but the whites learned very quickly about survival in the hostile African environment from the tribes who lived there for centuries, I know some soldiers from the Kenyan GSU, KDF and KWS, they have learned me so much about survival in Africa, from poaching small animals, repelling mosquitoes, up to slaughtering large game, catching crocodiles with a dead chicken, a giant fish hook, and an electronic winch, and how to defend your camp against large carnivorous animals wit Acacia branches, I always carry atleast 2x20 litres of water and 2x20 litres of fuel in my car, and i always carry my emergency backpack containing a small tool kit, Zippo lighter, KA-BAR knife, leatherman tool, magnesium stick, tie wraps, rope, first aid kit, compass and a flashlight whenever we travel somewhere remote.
Afrikaners AKA Boers have been in SA since the late 17th century. Yes of course they learned invaluable lessons from other African nations in SA, but Boer Bushkraft is a centuries-old tradition in and of itself and that nation is as much a part of Africa as any other nation of people on the continent.
As a Swiss, we all have to serve in the military as we have a militia system in Switzerland. We probably have nothing on these guys as they look though as nails and have some actual combat experience. I was fortunate enough to be assigned to the self propelled artillery (M109 KAWEST). I saw now the G6 Rhino in this video and I was wondering why other countries don't use wheeled howitzers. From what I've learned about the G6, it's very fast, has a very long firing range, is very modern and not expensive. And other howitzers are surely not better armored (except for maybe the German PzH 2000). I honestly would like to try that thing out, looks like a beast. Great video by the way. Thanks!
Probably because geography, and artillery doctrine. You see, G6 is a wheeled artillery that has great performance on flat lands and savannah, which south Africa regions consist of, and could be maintained without needing extensive equipment unlike M109. The SADF, which employed it in the Bush War also pressured mobile tactics to wear down rebels. G6 if I recall are usually used as shoot and scoot vehicle, as to avoid counter-battery and tank rush from both SWAPO and MPLA. I think other than geography and doctrine, it was also logistical problem. I mean, if you could import already well established product with robust supply line why you would order something that, at the time, unknown and alien at best? Hope this helps.
@@rakaipikatan8922 Thanks for the food for thoughts. I'm honestly just fascinated by the G6. The shoot and scoot tactics is what we trained with the M109 KAWEST as well. That's just basic mobile artillery tactics to, as you said, avoid counter-battery. But yes, with the wheels it's definitely more suited for bush war.
In terms of punch for its size and professionalism I don't think there was much to pick between SADF, IDF or the British Armed forces back in those days all in their own separate ways. But the fact the SADF was mainly a conscript army and what they were called on to do on several occasions really is impressive. The battle of the Lomba river really was a very impressive action.
I do think they are competent, really. But i must say there are a lot to be proven still, since they were fighting incompetent enemies. Just a non political argument, i think the Wehrmacht still has nothing comparable. They achieved a 10 to 1 casualty ratio against Red Army in Kharkov, while the USSR itself achieved 8 to 1 casualty ratio against Japan in Manchuria. All the while IJA achieved 8 to 1 casualty ratio against Britain in Malaya. Of course, there are many factors involved, but you get the point. No offense, SADF didn't fight capable opponents. Nor did IDF. But they are really competent, yes. If not, they would have been slaughtered.
@@stateservant we were experts at fighting cowardly terrorists , who attacked the weak and the innocent , we were experts at hunting down and killing those dogs , just like the IDF , what you seem to forget is that Boer soldiers took on and gave the greatest empire on earth the most expensive war they ever fought , there are thousands of graves of english solders here to this day as proof that we are a great fighting nation , also Winston Churchill himself said that we are the best soldiers on the planet so with all due respect FU , bring whomever you like , we will bury them next to the english you little ***** BTW the IDF kicked your little arab asses all over the desert in the 6 day war and since then you were too cowardly to take them on in a conventional war so do us all a favor and STFU
Thanks for the video man.I am south african and I respect what the SADF in our country.I'm proud to be in Afrikaans heritage. My father served as a driver in SADF.
RuneSlavv- true but even then the SADF had black soldiers who had a fierce reputation!! The sad part of this racist past was these men were never counted in the causality reports only white troopers at least to the public.
Wow. I well remember admiring the SADF. In every encounter with MPLA and their Cuban allies the SADF kicked their ass! Despite or perhaps because of the sanctions ARMSCOR became a first class developer of new military equipment. It pains me to think of the RSA and Rhodesia being gone. The world is a poorer place without them.
Our country was once great now nothing more than a shadow. I am sad to see my home is such a state. I see home as a shadow and that's what I know but all I want is to see it in the light like never before no corruption no more fighting amongst ourselves and to bring back the good. And yet I fear I may never see it as how it should be. So please be strong to those that read this please think of the good and many we will se the light.
Huh? Look at that! No fat assed whiners. No sloppy, dirty uniforms half hanging off. Equipment all clean and functional. Vehicles maintained and used properly. DISCIPLINE! Must be pre-1994
@@justanotherlegend3315 So much of it was disbanded post 1994, to be replaced by largely African personnel. The old guard are still around, by and large, and they are still capable of reeking mayhem . . . if required.
Even tough you got apartheid... The Black's are trained Very well. Now, most the veterans of this war says that today, their new soldiers are a piece of joke...
Can I just say your videos are really good watched a couple of them and it's good to see the history being shown in a tastefully way as most of these events are forgotten about by most people nowadays and for me it's just mad to see these things I've read about I thought it would be hard to find the footage of this stuff now.
Your friend told me that a Cuban soldier who participated in the Congo conflict in 1980-89 recalled that SADF soldiers fought very professionally and had very modern equipment at that time.
I really hope that one day people will understand that the fall of the Apartheid in South Africa, but also in Rhodesia wasn't something good, but only brought poverty, criminality and underdevelopment. I really hurts me to see what Rhodesia and South Africa have become today. Greetings from Germany.
Thanks i am 63 now was 17 when I was called up yep the fighting was Eazy the 9 months training was the problem but yes it seperated the boys from the men
Sorry mate. You can go support an ANC intelligence service Jew (roche) who's had 4 marriages, one of which has delivered a mixed race baby with a Malaysian woman... But I'm steering clear. The suidlanders reek of psy-op
@@konebrieber2390 same here. They're very good at misusing the sentiment of the white south africans. I can tell you a lot but just go to duckduckgo and search for jan lamprecht's info on them "two Americans investigate the suidlanders" or something like that
Thanks MajorSamm... Bit bland this time, as it was mostly filmed during exercises.... For obvious reasons you will never see 2 or more soldiers or vehicles in one camera screen in an operational situation, or wearing their rank/insignia... Wish I can pass on more videos to you, as you have the eye to edit, and the taste to add the best music to enhance the situation. But then again, there is a lot on Bosoorlog and other RU-vid videos, like Bok van Blerk, Kaplyn.... 🦇🎖️🇿🇦🎖️🦇
Our colonization of South West Africa was criminal and should have never happened. Namibia should have been given it's independence as soon as the German Empire was expelled.
@@AirWolfAT6 look at Z Rhodesia/Zimbabwe or South Africa I think the both of them and the Brits would have been better off had they stayed in the British empire hell most African countries would have been.
@@notwanted6695 Even Britain left the British Empire. Now they are under permanent austerity. The subjugation of other peoples is a crime. Not to mention the exploitative economics. You should read more about colonization. I also recommend Empire by Jeremy Paxton if you would rather watch something on the topic.
@@CrimeEnjoyer you just go around in the internet calling people fascist without knowing what it meant. How your family went in South Africa and became Rambo family again ?
I want South Africa and Rhodesia the way they were my father was in the military not in South Africa but told me they had the best artillery in the world at the time what happened to this glorious nation
Venom Snake you asked what happened to the glorious nation? Unfortunately after apartheid, all progress instantly halted and white people were practically exiled. Hence why all previously owned white African countries are now starving as all white farmers were expelled
This must have been one of the best armies worldwide, all-round. These guys were tough as nails and disciplined like hell. Not to be compared to the shitpile of their army today....How come they were disbanded?????
Same Uniforms, same tactics, same weapons, and same millitary name. Sorry South Africa, for succumbing to American demands and betraying you, our great allies, our great nuclear partners.
