Larry is one of 3 men to win the league’s MVP award 3 consecutive years. But in addition to that, in the years prior and after he was 2nd in the voting. In fact he was 1st or 2nd in the MVP voting EIGHT years in a row. Very dominant player in his prime. 🏀

The man honoring Bird with the signed jersey is Earvin "Magic" Johnson. The two shared a rivalry dating back to college, and throughout their professional careers. After initially disliking each other, they became blood brother friends - even as they competed. In 1991, Johnson tested positive for HIV. In that era, there was a huge stigma to the disease. Many players, even teammates, distanced themselves and threatened to boycott games if Johnson were to play. Larry was amongst the first to call Magic and to offer whatever help and support he could. Larry and Magic are widely considered two of the three greatest players in the game's history. Having been around to watch them during their careers, I have to concur. They are the basketball equivalent of Lennon and McCarthy. It is impossible to mention one without the other.

Unlike most retirement ceremonies, Larry’s retirement was on a night without a game & it was sold out. Larry ended up going on to Coach the Indiana Pacers for 3 years (he won Coach of the year) & then he worked in the front office (he won Executive of the year as well). Larry is the ONLY NBA player to win Rookie of the Year, MVP, Finals MVP, Coach of the Year, & Executive of the Year.

For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play. Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year off in his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season WE= can not forget that Olympic Gold Medal (1992 Dream Team)

One thing these videos don’t convey is that Bird ALSO was a great rebounder. He averaged 10.0 per game. He was almost unique in his mix of high scoring and rebounding. And you round up the other 2 or 3 guys who were close to those stats in his era, and he blew THEM away with his passing and assists AND with his free throw percentage.

Bird retired in August 1992. The retirement ceremony was held in February 1993. It was an entirely separate event, not held on a game night, or as a halftime ceremony. Boston Garden was completely sold out. Proceeds went to charities. Bird had the opportunity to thank the fans and the fans got an opportunity to show their appreciation again. There's a video on yt of the entire program that night. You might be able to react to it, maybe break it into a couple different videos to upload.

I'll keep it brief, because I could literally write a biography on Larry Bird. First, in the playoff game against the Indiana Pacers, not only did Bird fracture his cheek, he also had a concussion and double vision. He still came back with 3 minutes left in the Third quarter and scored 17 points over the last part of the game to lead the Celtics back to victory. Second, Larry Bird vs. Earven Magic Johnson is arguably the single greatest personal rivalry in sports history. Not just basketball - ALL of sport. Last, I recommend watching Larry Bird's Most Savage Moments. So good.

Yeah, Bird for me is top 5. Played with all the skill you could ask for - ambidextrous, superb vision, unlimited range on his shooting - could post up or hit the 3 pointer. Then to the finals of the NCAA Tournament where they lost to Magic Johnson’s over loaded with talent Michigan State team. I followed his career as a Boston Celtic fan even though I was from Chicago Bulls town. If you delve into the debate about the GOAT of professional basketball, and after you watch all the videos, save Larry’s passing video for last. Larry Bird does all that they all can do, but none other can even come close to his extraordinary passing like a quarterback abilities.

Magic Johnson and Larry Bird have a story that Hollywood writers wish they could come up with. Two men with completely different personalities but mirror images on the court. They each wanted to be the greatest basketball player ever. They entered the NBA when ratings were low and it seemed the sport my end. Their rivalry saved professional basketball. Magic got H.I.V. in 1991 and had to retire. Larry a few years earlier had severely injured his back but kept pushing and retired in 1992. Their final basketball games were to lead the U.S. Olympic Basketball team alongside Michael Jordan as part of the Dream Team. What a finale to two awesome careers

So many Larry bird videos to react to now. Bird and magic saved the NBA in the 80s when it was on its knees. Michael Jordan's bulls mixtape is a must now as in my opinion the best mixtape I have seen by far and I have seen many but nothing compares to Jordan's mixtape. If Larry impressed you Jordan will just blow you away. But just to add Larry got the better of Jordan with a 6-0 in the playoffs and 23-11 if you include the regular season. Now to be fair to Jordan he was playing a celtics team stacked with hall of famers but when pippin and rodman joined Jordan on the bulls and magic and Larry were near retirement it was game over for everyone else. Jordan didn't save basketball but he made it a worldwide phenomenon and took it to the next level.

Larry and magic built each other, and together they rebuilt the NBA. There’s so many good videos on both of these guys and their relationship.

Larry's back injury cut his career short. The last several years he played in awful pain. He couldn't sit, had to lay down on planes and the side lines. After some games he would head straight to the hospital for traction on his back. He put his body through a lot of wear and tear. He had a brilliant basketball mind.

I think the reason Larry's fakes worked so well was because the opposition couldn't afford to ignore the fakes even if they didn't look all that convincing. He could shoot from just about anywhere on the court (and held the scoring record for the Celtics), and his passing had even more range. So if he moved like he was going to shoot, the opposition had to try to block it. If he moved like he was going to pass, the opposition had to try to block it. When a player is a ball hog, it's easy for the other team to see through the fake passes, but Larry was too unpredictable.

He would sometimes go to the hospital before a big game and be put in traction for the night. Toward the end of his career. Because of his injured back, he’d still play 3 quarters.

Don't worry about Larry. Most valuable player (MVP) 3 consecutive years in a row. He became coach of the year for the Indiana Pacers. He became the NBA executive of the year. The only player to win all 3. He was born to play basketball.

Larry wasn't entirely done with the sport as he went on to coach the Indiana Pacers to their only Finals appearance and was designate Coach of The Year for his efforts. He then moved up to the position of President of Basketball Operations and received the Executive of The Year for his efforts in that position.

I grew up a fan of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, but the player who could beat you the most ways with the most skills was Larry Bird. Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years.
