South Bend 13L Metal Lathe overview. I go over some of the basic features of this lathe and how fast does the spindle really go? I also cover some of the main differences between the Heavy 10 and the 13" Lathe. These are nice machines and are a step up from the 10" lathes.

I have added a 1942 South Bend 13 to my computer program Ride The Gear Train . (search without the spaces). It is a bit unusual because it has sliding gears in the gear train similar to Myford lathes. The user may be looking for change gears. One object is to cut metric threads, but this can often be done without the expense of proper metric transposition gears.

We have the same one only a 1970. Really sweet and reliable especially considering it came out of a high school. We advocate eye protection as well!

Hello Great Video, great info! Question I'm getting ready to buy a south bend 16" x 6' tool room in great condition for $1,500 but also I can buy a clausing 13" for $2,500 in great condition too, which one you will prefer if you can buy both and why? I'm leaning more into the southbend. Thanks
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 2 года назад
Unless you need a really big lathe, I'de go with the clausing if they are both in similar condition. The 13" clausing is a very capable lathe. Parts can be had for both, but SB parts are usually easier to come by. I would look at accessories as well. The more the merrier.

@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 2 года назад
That machine was in extremely good shape. I also had it repainted by a machine rebuilder before I sold it. With all the accessories, Aloris tool post, collet attachment, steady rest, Taper attachment. In good shape this is a $4-5K lathe.

Thanks for the review and heavy 10 comparisons. I was thinking about a 13 or bigger after seeing a couple on ebay a few years ago but the extra size and weight put me off due to unloading logistics. I'm subscribed and looking forward to some more SB videos as and when and will check out your others as this was the first I've seen. I have a 9C in fairly good shape and a 10L missing its gearbox and leadscrew but it was really cheap @ 141 British Pounds or roughly $170 plus half a tank of fuel to collect. Best value for money I ever got!

Yeah, they are good old lathes and that was a heck of a deal on your SB. All of my current lathe videos are done on ether of my SB's so stay tuned. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

I'm just starting to look for an old South Bend metal working lathe in the 1940's - 1950/60's era in restorable condition and because of this I have no frame of reference as far as pricing goes. Could you please provide me with some parameters for what I would be paying for one of these machines? Thanks very much.
@michaelwalker1865

Nice vid and very informative. I just subscribed and liked. I’m looking at a 13 now and will probably buy it. It has a tooth off the 80 tooth idle gear. Is that gear available anywhere new? Is it the same as a heavy 10? Do you know where one of those gears are available ? Also can you tell me what the taper size is on the headstock spindle end. I don’t see a mt sleeve with this lathe that would go in the spindle end? Thanks
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 5 лет назад
Gears may be purchased through Grizzly. They purchased the SB name several years ago along with parts/tooling to make parts. Otherwise eBay is a good source for parts. The taper on both machines is a 4.5 Morse Taper.

I have a SB 13" x 72" fully tooled 3hp/3 phase with the 3 step pulley. My belt is 2-1/8" wide which gives it a lot of torque for heavier cuts. Smooth, quite running machine. Wouldn't part with it for anything else. It's a 1960 model that was well taken care of.

Are there replacement headstock bearings available? I have also read that you can adjust the bearing clearance to compensate for wear by removing shims in the bearing housing. What can you tell me about this?

I'm leaning towards keeping it. Yeah, I got most of the better attachments for it. I don't use much more than I have for this one. I have a handful of extras for my 10L like a micrometer stop, Metric gear set, and a few misc and I really never use them. The day I need them I'll be happy though.

How would one go about copying the profile of a existing barrel to a new barrel blank on a lathe like this ?
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 3 года назад
Easy way would be a duplicator, but most guys do a bunch of measuring down the length of the barrel every 1/2 to 3/4" and cut a bunch of diameters then blend them all together. There are barrel companies out there that will profile barrels for you too if you send it to them.

Couple questions if you have the time plese. Is yours 13" x 28" (70" overall length)? What was it like moving it? Do you have a video of moving it? Can it be lifted from a trailer with a 2 ton engine hoist? - Thanks
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 7 лет назад
Mine is the 6' bed and I think it's a 13x40" or so. I lifted mine with a 2 ton chain hoist straight off my trailer last time I moved it. I bought it in pieces and was able to winch it up one end at a time onto dollies to get it loaded. Just used a hand winch with 2 2x6's across several rafters. The bed, headstock, and carraige assembly we're together and the base, legs, and pan we're separate. I think they weigh 1,600+ lbs.

You do, but you can compensate mechanically by engaging the back gear or running in a lower gear.

@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 5 лет назад
Depends a lot on condition and tooling. Iv'e seen worn out ones go for around 4-500 with minimal tooling to over $5k in nice shape with a decent selection of tooling. Mine was fairly nice and wasn't all worn out. I sold mine to a friend and he got everything I had with it including the aloris tool post. I sold mine for around $3800 if I recall a year or so ago.

I agree with MHMS HS53. I've two large lathes (and a bitty one) and can't imagine only having one in the shop. Trust me. You'll have a barrel on one, and need to turn a simple bushing. No problem. Your young, have the skills and energy to grind two machines into the ground. And, I think it looks good on you.
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 8 лет назад
LOL, thanks! Yeah I did have two a few months back but I sold the Clausing 5914. I figure this would be a good lathe to take it's place. The only downside is that in keeping it, I'll want to do a resto like I did on my 10L. Not a bad thing, just takes forever and is a lot of work. They are a work of art when done up like my 10L.

do you lose Hp using a VFD and would it be better to change the motor to single phase 220 v
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 8 лет назад
I'm no expert, but to the best of my knowledge you don't lose any HP with the VFD. When you crank down the Pot, I'm not sure how that correlates. I could switch to a single phase, but the cost ends up about the same, and you can have variable speed with the VFD. Hence why I usually just get the VFD. I have been told that 3 phase power gives a more consistent pulse rate with the power with equals a better finish.
@timevers6735
@timevers6735 8 лет назад
Three phase motors are the back bone of industry for many reasons. You made the right decision going with a vfd. No down sides. Three phase motors are superior in every way. Simple,robust, usually larger bearings. No power loss and unlimited possibilities including ddc control. If you talk with maintenance repairmen, they'll likely have a stack of great motors that just need a pair of shielded bearings for grabs. I'd eat 10 if you don't love your vfd.

Something wrong. Audio and video not together. :-( Practical Machinist South Bend site has lots of info on using laced serpentine belt - quiet plus you don't have to pull spindle. A leather belt with clipper link will come apart but clicks.
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 8 лет назад
I'll have to look into it, might be your connection. Happens to me sometimes when watching RU-vid. I usually splice and glue stock type belts. I got sick of clicky belts a long time ago. I have not replaced this one yet because if I tear it apart for a resto, I don't want to go through the trouble of splicing and gluing only to cut it later. I'm on the PM site quite a bit. Thanks and take care!

the tool has too much radius for heavy Cuts Like That to expect a nice finish anyway and a heavy cut at the same time make a real Square shoulder tool with a nice chip breaker out of a nice piece of momax hi Cobalt content blank and you'll be doing a lot of super heavy cuts I can cut a tenth of an inch with my 10-inch Logan without even slowing down the motor at all at all it comes off like it's butter it's all in the tool it's all in the tool repeat that it's all in the tool Sharp Tools don't slow down your machine master tool making and you got it in the bag I love making tools I could stay in all day in front of a grinder

There was about a dozen identical lathes in my high school machine shop back in the early 60's. I learned to run a lathe in that class, along with the mills and shaper. A real blast from the past. Unfortunately, someone in the school system decided that machine shop was no longer relevant, and did away with all the machine tools back in the late 70's. What a bunch of idiots!
