I always like to see the semi-trucks sneaking around but nobody seems to notice them. As an over-the-road trucker, I have been in thousands and thousands of these kind of towns and places. You really see America if your a trucker.

What you see ain't nothing nice. I was stuck in Maryland on I-95 people hung around trying to unload 18 wheelers no work I tried to make a few hours pay to get to Philly. My dad had to come get me it took 3 or 4 hours. I tried to hitch hike out no way. Being stuck out on the road and I have been is horrible.

Born and raised South Carolina. I certainly appreciate you bringing real living, real issues to peoples' consciousness. At the same time, my family came from this rural part of SC. At one point driving through one of these towns, I made a remark that it is so sad, that is is so unlikely that people growing up here will have upward mobility. My father (who grew up far poorer than this) gently, but firmly corrected me. He changed my entire outlook. He grew up in a housing project, but he went on to be the first in the family to go to college - marry a beautiful, loving spouse and create a family. While statistics may say one thing about the poverty, personal diligence and perseverance can mean a whole lot more. This part of the country can be a vast reserve of grit and determination - which make for a hugely important factor in life success.

Guess what you didn't see in this video; homeless encampments, piles of trash, choking traffic. I am so, so very thankful that I was born and grew up in rural North Carolina. I'm just a couple of minutes from South Carolina. Also, I just got back from a trip to India. After experiencing the streets and traffic of Delhi, these wide, clean, empty streets look like the road to Paradise. So you see, a town that might not look like much to you, can be that slice of Heaven, for someone else.

I was born in Columbia but only lived there till I was 7, then moved to Oklahoma and later Alabama, my grandparents lived in Spartanburg and owned land up near Cowpens - Gaffney on an old farm with abandoned house and wooded area with creek, the times we went there are priceless with the visitations reminiscent of exceptional food and the smell of honeysuckle and Carolina Jasmine, to the north you could see 2 mountain peaks that were the south boundary of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Thanks for showing these hidden parts of the Palmetto State that even most who live here rarely see. There are really two South Carolinas. The one that includes urban areas around Columbia, Greenville and Charleston, as well as Myrtle Beach and Rock Hill, can't build homes or improve infrastructure fast enough for the massive influx of new residents. But many other parts of the state like these towns are just backwaters now with little in the way of economic growth or incentive for people to stay or move to. It's sad to see the state of decay in these places that were left behind in an area of the country that is overall experiencing explosive growth.
@donm3844
@donm3844 Год назад
Just because they show urban areas that have more money, more people and more menial jobs like fast food ,it doesn't mean small towns are a bad place to live ,the small towns across america were thriving with people once, Those people that stayed, are mostly just retired and living the same life as if they retired in a large city, Many just choose to stay for the peace and quiet and feel not having all the cars and people driving by is a much safer and better place to live then any larger city, The good part about these small towns a lot of times are cheap prices on property, cheaper taxes and low crime, that'smainly due to young people who prefer big cities., I retired and lived in the city to make money, then retired early ,bought a few hundred acres of land and built a home in a area similar , all because of low prices , low taxes and low crime, I would never want to move from the country .
@geoffbreen2386
@geoffbreen2386 Год назад
Surely over time the population pressure will see a demand for these small towns if they are not too far from the coast which could be the centre of the action. Not everyone can afford to be in the centre and many are happy to be on the edges. People live where they can afford, be happy and hopefully safe. What may look like a dying town with many abandoned buildings will be very different in 10 years. I've seen this happen all over the world and South Carolina will be no exception. The penny will drop, a few will see the opportunity and before you know it real estate is booming. Watch this space.

What ruined this Amercian Colony - the US if how the politicians allowed manufacturing to go overseas. This destroyed the middle class as anyone with only a high school education more than likely got stuck in poverty. In addition or elementary and high schools the quality of education has gone down and down and the respect for teachers and those in authority does not exist so frankly the country here is finished.

I live in SC., near Augusta, GA. My house has a large front porch. The big porches in the south were necessary before air conditioning. They not only shielded the windows from allowing the sun to shine right in, keeping the house cooler, but they provided a shady area to sit outside when the house became unbearably hot, especially when there was a breeze blowing outside, or when the sun was going down. @@christinesommerfeld9815 that's more about design though, foreign cars were better value and more economical and safer that their US brothers. When all your jobs are moved to another country the consequences to local economies is massive. The highways from the coast/ports for instance, bypass local towns and close down local businesses while goods are transported by truck to greater urban depots. And that's just one example. Lowered standards of living due to lower wages which only work as long as goods that are produced cheaply don't make a sudden rise in price due to unforeseen events. Even the tech age profits of US development have gone to another Country while those working in the sectors development are earning salaries far greater than the average citizen. Only advantage to tech is that location is not always a disadvantage, but influence does reside in one main location. Sorry to be so longwinded but the consequences of outsourcing have been devastating and far greater than all I have listed here.

We are a couple who are reaching our mid 60s, and have nothing. But I was inspired to see how many wonderful homes there still are in areas not so nice... (we don't care about nice neighborhoods) and I am suddenly inspired to find one of them, though we are soon to be on SS only. Maybe a rental... Anyhow, this has really set off a bomb in my mind. Thank you, God bless you! PS We currently rent a nice 1963 2 BR bungalow in Greenville on 1 and 1/2 acre, but too close to town, would like to be further out.

There's plenty old cheap homes for sale outta town on large blocks. You probably find the rent your paying where you are now would pay for one of these homes and blocks of dirt . One thing is lack of services like medical ect . And that's very important when you're getting older to have them close by. Take care and best of luck in life.

My girlfriend and I ran away from a dying bush town as soon as we were old enough to get our car license here in Australia. We both got good trade jobs and became successful in life. 20 years later, we dropped into the local drinking club to see if any of our old friends were still living there. Finding some old friends we were asked "When are we moving back home ?" These people were stuck in time looking sad and old with no money or future.. They failed to see their town had nothing to offer other than poverty, addiction, boredom, and a wasted life. They weren't happy just surviving.

He has lived all over the USA but he likes to tell a story about how when he was a young boy traveling with his family, they ran out of gas outside of Orangeburg and he had to walk into town for more gas and was forever cursed to be bound to that godforsaken place. He later worked there not long after graduating college in USC (Columbia, SC). Eventually he worked in Charleston, then Macon, GA, then Winston-Salem, NC before he ended up back in Orangeburg. Now he's 60 and seemingly stuck there, much to his disdain.
