The US’ “ironclad” commitment towards the Philippines has been emphasised on several occasions. However, the current context is significant, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr deciding to strengthen their alliance due to China’s uncompromising stance in the South China Sea dispute, and tensions over Taiwan, which the Philippines is the closest neighbour to. Distinguished Professor of International Studies Renato Cruz De Castro from De La Salle University shares more on CNA’s Asia First.

All that the professor said was true…majority of Filipinos think this way…we realized that China is a friend only in words but void in action and they cannot blame us for leaning towards US again…actually its none of China’s business…at the end of the day we have interests, people and resources to protect.

The Philippines: 5 years...5 years...5 years...all wasted by their presidents - past and present. China: 5 years...5 years...5 years...not a single day is wasted. Do you know what is the GDP of China? Do you know how many "the Philippines" China can produce each year? Chinese has been around for 5000 years. In the past 3000 years, Chinese has been struggling to fight the top 1% - the big families. South Korea, Japan, and the US are failing. These countries are controlled by big families, but not their people. You should know why if you're not a sheep. The Philippines will not have a future until the big families are being sorted out. Spend the next 100 years to sort out your internal problem. Maybe you can be a valuable ally of papa America 100 years later. Ha ha ha!

The mythical Nine Dash line originated from the 11-Dash line which was drawn up during the 1940's, and was summarized to 9-Dash line because it could not stand on its own. All these Dash lines originated from Qin dynasty's defeat in the 1884-1885 Sino-French War, where a treaty was signed delimiting China's border with Vietnam but did not clarify water borders. All in all, China's claim to South China Sea beyond it's EEZ is beyond laughable. For centuries, Chinese knowledge on places beyond the south of Hainan were from Austronesian sailors and Buddhist monks. The only other island in their consciousness is Borneo. Now they are claiming a 3000 year old ownership to the seas.

Like the professor said, China did this to themselves by harassing Filipino fishermen in their own territorial waters and building a military base right next to the Philippines. How else did they think the the Philippines was going to respond? Marcos asked the US to bring back their bases for a very good reason. If China is so upset about it, then why did they force Marcos into making this kind of decision??

China already said many times that South China Sea (SEA) disputes return to the table for negotiations and return to the track of bilateral negotiations. Philippines kow-towing American and never stand on its feet to date. Instead of having coast guard at dispute area, Philippines send fishermen to make media news and latest send journalist with coast guard to make a new show. War in Asian would only benefits to arms dealer like American not China or Philippines.

Murillo Velarde Map - This map shows the Spratlys as part of the Philippines. Published in 1734 in Manila by the Jesuit Pedro Murillo Velarde. This is the oldest map that gives a name to “Los Bajos de Paragua,” literally the shoals of Paragua. Paragua is the Spanish name for the islands of Palawan with the Spratlys. Before Portuguese navigators “named” the South China Sea, the sea was known as the Champa Sea, after the Cham people who established a kingdom in Central Vietnam from the late 2nd to the 17th century. The ancestors of the Chams spoke a language derived from the Austronesian language, from which the Tagalog language is also derived. As early as the 1500s, ancient maps referred to the islands in the Champa Sea as “Pulo,” which in Tagalog means an “island, isolated place.” Chinese only learned to navigate the open seas after the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty commissioned Champa/Vietnamese ships into Java. After the fall of the Yuan Dynasty, it had taken a couple of hundred years for the Chinese to actually sail the open seas. It was ships from Champa, prehistoric-Philippines, and other Austronesian maritime nations that used to sail the Champa seas (South China Sea) arriving in Chinese ports. This can be verified from many Chinese Dynastic records. Austronesians had been sailing the opens seas for thousand of years. Ancient Filipinos had already reached and colonized Guam Before the Current Era. How much more on reaching the Spratlys which is so near. Been sailing to ancient Champa before the Chinese ever learned to sail the open seas in the middle of Ming dynasty era only. It’s sad how some people make it mostly to be about the US vs China or about how the Philippines could be strategic against the invasion of Taiwan. The Philippines wants to protect our poor fishermen who have to go through harassment from the Chinese just to earn a living. And what about the laser pointing incidents and others maneuvers from the Chinese that produce near collisions? Do we just turn a blind eye? True, we don’t have enough military defense; that is another story. And so the Philippines has to turn to an ally. I am not saying I trust the American government 100 percent. It’s just really unbelievable that the Chinese are building in our own territory in Palawan. It’s like someone building in your property. Just looking at the proximity of the islands, I am amazed at the claims. China could learn from the example of Indonesia and the Philippines’ diplomatic and amicable settlement of disputed territories. No one wins in a war. I can only imagine the fumes and more toxins released if ever, and the fear of danger lifetrap and other trauma that this generation could pass on to the next. I personally would like to think that China does not have invasion as a priority. What it wants is to amass resources. As a communist country, the government has to provide for everything and that puts a lot of pressure. That could also produce a scarcity worldview , the mindset that there is not enough to get by. Hence, PRC is acting out of fear. Fear makes nations operate in greed and aggression. Takot mawalan, takot maubusan, takot maunahan. Basic humanity lesson. Never subscribe to the fear narrative. It will breed more suspicion and greed.

When one is entrust with power and authority like Biden, he should feel blessed and do good for people. Not provocating with tensions, killer weapons and wars which need people blood and pain. Do good and be blessed with easy departure to another dimension esp when one is already 80 yo. We do not want to be in great suffering by hospitalisation or met with accidents or long terminal illness before departure from earth. And this is not within any human control - the ultimate karma bank

China is a lost cause and it is a business risk. Anytime China can start hostilities and all investments and products of China will be a lost. See what happened in Russia, where more than one thousand "western" brands left the country...Sony, Samsung, Toyota, Hyundai, Boeing, Airbus, Apple, VW, MB, Renault, Honda, etc.... Stop buying China brands. Stop every cent from funding the CCP and its military. There is no real private company in China since the right of personal ownership is not absolute like in democratic countries. People can own things only to the extent that the CCP allows and they must fully comply for any request made by the CCP - technically everything is owned and controlled by the CCP ex. Jack Ma.....

Philippines have not learnt their lessons yet! The Philippine-American War, known alternatively as the Philippine Insurrection, Filipino-American War,or Tagalog Insurgency, was fought between the First Philippine Republic and the United States from February 4, 1899, until July 2, 1902. Tensions arose after the United States annexed the Philippines under the Treaty of Paris at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War rather than acknowledging the Philippines' declaration of independence, Filipino civilians: 200,000-1,000,000 died, most because of famine and disease; including 150,000-200,000 dead from cholera. Filipino Soilders died : not accounted. China did not kill any Filipino US is responsible for more than one million Filipinos civilians death including scores of Filipino soldiers dead, during the US-Philippines War from Feb 4 1899 til Jul 1902. China did not kill any Filipino but US did!

Stupid Anti-US bases people should learn the lessons from South Korea and Japan that even if they are now considered superpowers both military and economically, thay still want to keep the US bases in their homeland and never let it go.

The Chinese in China have not learnt their lessons yet ! Their govt (CCP) has been subjecting them to countless revolutions and irrational policies (more of protecting the party than its people) and resulting in the death of millions of its own citizens. Does the CCP care for its people? The people are just pawns to be used to consolidate the party's power. The lives of the ordinary citizens have no value in the eyes of their govt. Why haven't the Chinese people realized that? Or they have been brain-washed and still willing to support such a govt who have no reservation in destroying them when it is needed. So idiotic for them to support such a govt who does not care whether they are alive or not.
