I was a working musician at the time the Captain and Me came out playing 6 nights a week for over a year in a bar. I always enjoyed just listening to this song and never really thought about learning the acoustic part rather concentrating on the lead lines. But 40 years later, I will follow your direction and learn this song thanks to your video. One tends to take for granted the beauty of a composition while overlooking what technical skills were needed to create it.
Pat Simmons also one of my favorite guitar players, and The Doobie Brothers hands the best, better than the Eagles who I also like alot. Had the honor of meeting Pat of all places at the Costco in Maui. I looked at him, I took a double take and then bravely asked him if he was part of a very famous rock band, his reply was " have you ever heard of the Rolling Stones". We proceeded to chat it up, talking mostly with my struggles learning Clear as Driven snow, he launched into explaining the tuning....Made my day
I've loved this song since I owned the album back in the early 70's. I never ever thought I'd be able to play it. But now, thanks to your video and the patient and detailed way you lay it out... I can! It brings a smile to my face every time I do. Thank you!
Woke up this morning and thought, I'd like to learn a Doobie Brothers song. This is one of my all-time favorites, and with a quick RU-vid search this video came up. Flash forward a few hours and "Viola!" I can play it, all thanks to your awesome instruction! Thank you very much for a fantastic lesson!
We laymen are fortunate to have good musicians such as yourself to cover the middle ground, so to speak. A wonderful song by the Doobies, thanks for your effort’s Td!
First off it's insane that the Doobies are not in the Hall of Fame and once again you have taught me another great song Thanks so much for your selfless well thought out lessons you are a great player and teacher have a great 2019.
Back when great intros just got the hand automatically moving to turn up the truck radio and get the chills started. This is one of those songs, for sure. Thanks so much for this :)) Jim
agreed 100%...maybe it was because we were young and were taught to do as we're told.....and at the beginning of sweet home alabama were told "turn it up"
Had the privilege of attending a memorial service last week end for the legendary motor cycle builder Arlen Ness, who built a bike for Pat Simmons, Pat sang South City Midnight Lady for Arlen's wife, Bev. You have the song down.
hello Trish! I'm SO jealous - sorry to hear about the loss but Mr Simmons is a huge influence and hero of mine and if i could meet any guitarist, and i've met a few, he's the one. I don't know that it will ever happen - been to a bunch of shows and just can't get to him. If you see him again tell him he has a huge fan in KY:) SCML is an all time fave of mine and interestingly enough i played it at a funeral about a month ago at the request of the family. Hope all is well, your friend, dale.
As a non musician, I found myself watching this as a fan of the song. Your lessons were interesting to observe, but I loved when you said this sounds so beautiful to my ears. INDEED, this music sounds GORGEOUS to my ears. I am drawn the song, the music, the vocals. Thank you for your work on this.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the enjoyment of this song. Its one of my life long favorites, as is Pat’s work and the Doobie Brothers... I was singing it with your playing. You are one of the best too! Dan
I simply had to echo the words of the people who wrote you before I saw this. This is guitar instruction perfection. Please know how very very much we all appreciate you sharing your talent with us. How can you not love this song? It's been on road trips everywhere. You are an absolutely excellent guitarist AND instructor. Aaaaand... you're teaching us the greatest songs on the planet. Again, thank you so much.
@@tonedr Brother Dale, The guitar cases behind you. My wife and I were wondering where you get them. They look bullet proof. Very nice collection as well. Obviously. :) Thank you so much, Jeff
Many many great songs by these guys but this one is my favorite from the first time I heard it in 1973. I was 16. Still my fav. Great lesson. Thank you
I think this album , The Captain and Me was fantastic!,, full of tone, harmonies and wonderful writing Thank you brother! The crescendo at the end of South City Midnight Lady is so tasteful and moving.....yet joyfully haunting in its own way... so cool
Like many other folks here, I've loved this song for, well, decades. I came across this vid and and can now mostly play the intro (on my Taylor GS Mini, which is awesome). I had no idea it was an open tuning, all these years. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I've always been a "I have enough challenges with standard tuning" guy, but am starting to dabble in open tunings... Cheers!
Thanks for this tutorial. The Doobies are one of my all time favorite bands. I got to see them live years ago. Pat Simmons is an awesome guitar player, one of my favorites!
Watching this, I can feel your joy and admiration for Pat and this marvelous tune. If anyone asks me what my favorite Doobie's song is, I always reply with this one...which more often than not yields dumbfounded looks and an "I don't think I know that one." Thanks a million for this lesson. Now I have homework to do!!
very kind post and very appreciated! I totally agree - it's a track that not everyone has heard but a serious DB fan knows for sure! Hope you enjoy playing this one, your friend, dale.
Wonderful! Thank you for the tutorial. Much appreciated because I am not yet very comfortable with alternate tunings. When analyzing a song I know that when I come up with impossible finger patterns, I have to look for alternate tunings. I’m in the Netherlands so I was very fortunate to see The Doobie Brothers live twice in 2010 and uh… another year. Very happy I clicked on your tutorial!
Thanks a bunch for putting this up. I wanted my own home grown rendition so I could play pedal steel to it. Your youtube teaching popped up. I did not remember this tuning but there it was. Easy as pie.
thank for the time you invested in this video to share your knowledge and talent; your patience in explaining all sections of the song has been extremely helpful in my understanding the flow of the song and the timing. You're the best!
Learnt this tune many years ago, but forget how it went. Thanks to you Dale I have the complete picture again. Also loved your tutorial about Black Water. Saw the Doobies recently in The Netherlands and I was again blown away by their music. Have been a huge fan of them since 1972 (Toulouse Street). There's always a message of love and optimism in their music, apart from their excellent compositions. Greetings from Alexander
Thanks so much for taking the time to go through this song. I play covers in the Baltimore area and have for quite awhile and although I love the Doobie Brothers and play several of their big hits. I had never heard this song until just recently a friend asked if I had heard it and thought it would be a great song for my duo. It's nice to find those awesome songs you overlook. Thanks again. This really sped up my learning curve!!
Hi Dale , Thank you, and it is an honor to get lessons from a Famous member of the great "Lexington Lab Band" (LLB ). I have always loved the music that Pat and Tom wrote. I remember buying the vynal "Captain And Me" album when it first came out. In my band we played Ukiah, and Dark eyed, was in the set too. Tiran Porter is so awesome on that album too. For each song you teach, you get the tone so good, that's why they call you the Tone Dr. I imagine. Try to find any clinics that Pat gives so you can meet him. .try harder to make it happen Bro. I was Blessed to meet Gary Rossington from Skynyrd in a hotel lobby in a non rushed situation before they were getting on the bus to go do a show. I told Gary that even though I'm a Bass player , I bought my first Les Paul because of him, and he got a kick out of that. Then when we were done chatting, I whipped out my Skynyrd's "First and Last " album for him to sign. Gary's signature readable just like he learned to write in school, No rockstar BS signature, down to earth just like Mr. Rossington himself... A great Man. R.I.P. now with the Lord of lords and the King of kings in Heaven.
Thanks so much for checking this out..greatly appreciated! great post...took me right there with you - miss buying albums but glad we grew up that way. Take care, your friend, dale.
Thanks for the great lesson. I met Pat Simmons in a grocery store in Santa Cruz, Ca. in 1983. I said hello and shook his hand. He was very polite and kind.
Thank You Sir for sharing your thoughts and knowledge with this song. This is a great song and you do an Excellent Job depicting the acoustic arrangement. Im still learning at 62. Again, Thank You ;)) ~!~
Excellent Tutorial - Love Pat Simmons too. Was lucky enough to meet up with Pat and The Doobies in Taupo NZ in 2011 - Used to play quite a few of their songs over the 70's and 80's in a young covers band
Great sound, great playing, but best of all, outstanding instruction! You're a tremendous resource for every aspiring guitar player! I always loved this tune and now I'm going to learn it! Man, you sound great! Many thanks!
@@tonedr Merry Christmas, tonedr. Thank you for sharing your talents and taking the time and patience to teach us guitarist how to play some great music. Coming here to your channel and learning from you has enriched my life greatly and I am so grateful to you for that.
Just as good as the last time I saw it . Thank you . 🎯 The harmonics in those incredible chords ... say , the special touch of collaborative unity and combined God given talent ... make the true beauty of this song what it has always been . 👍 Semper Fi
This has always been one of my all time favorites!! Excellent tutorial, thanks for explaining the tuning, chords, and picking. This is now a permanent part of my repertoire.
Your playing through it gave me chills and I’ve heard it a 1000x at least. I am a bass player & always loved the part Tiran created that fits so well with the guitar parts. Genius on all parts.
Thank you for this insightful tutorial. I have played this tune in standard for years and few ever complained but secretly I made it my mission to learn this in the correct tuning. Maintaining the rhythm and singing it is a little trickier but it sounds so much better.
Wow - have loved this song for years and never attempted it until today. OF COURSE it's open tuning, what was I thinking. Sharing your link with my band. We'll be adding this to our set list. Many thanks for your time and talent! Excellent tutorial.
Hey, I've learnt a lot from your tutorials, and I finally got to play this song by your other tutorial a long time ago. You're one of the best!! Love the way your guitar sounds.
Good one Dale, thanks! Sorry for the Browns loss yesterday, they can still hold their heads high. My Titans loss last night. All the best to you and your family in 2019!!!
What a great teaching session on such a great song! Big Pat Simmons fan here also. Doobie Bros songs (especially their earlier works) have always been my favorites. I will add this to my portfolio of songs. You're clear and "spot-on" instruction will help me get there! Please keep them coming. You have such a gift and we're so glad you share it with us!! Great work!
Thank you so much for this. I’m a pretty accomplished player and at 65 have been playing since the age of 8. Saying that, I would never have figured out the tuning let alone the fingering. I know your tutorial may be difficult for a beginner or even intermediate player but for me it was perfect and easy to master a song I’ve always loved albeit a lesser known Doobies tune. Thanks again👍
If I haven't already left u a comment on this one, thanks for posting this! I'm getting older and can't remember these like I used to and I have to come back and refer to it every so often.
I guess we've come full circle. It was your Another Park, Another Sunday tutorial all those years ago that I stumbled across and first discovered you. In my opinion, this is one of the Doobie's best songs and certainly one that most people overlook.
Man... this tune always pulled hard at my emotions and the open tuning is why. The song is genius and I could never play it right. You addressed all the questions I had. You play beautifully also. I want to try it on a twelve string so I'll probably have to strum it but I have to get those slide nuisances though... but thank you so much!
What a great instructional video for a tremendous Doobie song. As a new guitarist, I find your method of instruction very easy to follow which makes learning the song fun. Please keep posting!!! Just subscribed to follow your stuff. Tks
Thank you for this lesson. I have always loved this song and consider Pat Simmons a very underrated guitar player and composer. I will have to sit down and start working on learning this song. Quite a backdrop of colorful guitar cases there!
Just an incredible lesson, man you nail the song! I can play everything except the run up to the 12 fret, my fingers are kinda fat lol, but I just leave off one string and it sounds decent up there. Thanks so much Tone Doc.
Great update of this fantastic song, thanks to you I've learned how to play this song almost flawlessly, hope you get to met Pat soon, I have met him several times and got his autograph on one occasion. He would be impressed with your tutorials, if he's seen them he will be pleased to meet you, I know he would, thanks again for a great lesson.
@@tonedr Your tutorials are so thorough and you explain the techniques so well, I honestly would have never learned this magnificent song without your guidance, I'm forever greatful, you are also a very fine guitar player, you "Rock", again, Thank you Dale. If your ever in Milwaukee please look me up.
Awesome Lesson . And it's a true shame that the Doobies have not been inducted into the RRHOF . They more than deserve the Honor . Thanks again & already looking forward to the next lesson .
