The very name “Kirkby” derives from the old English word “Kirk” meaning church and the Old Norse “by” denoting village. Thus the word “Kirkby” means village with a church. For many centuries, both settlements here were simply farming villages until the start of the industrial revolution.
This one has been twinned with Sprockhövel in the Ruhr Valley of Germany since 1981. This is why if you venture out of the town to the main A6201 road that runs to the North, you’ll notice it’s named Sprockhövel Way. Since that time the International Friendship Circles of both have organised an annual exchange visit.
A lot of the land area here is taken up by the Langthwaite Grange Industrial Estate, situated off Langthwaite Road. A well established industrial area, this benefits from good transport links. The A638 Doncaster Road is only six minutes drive away, providing direct access to the A1(M) at Junction 38.
Speaking of Langthwaite, there’s a stream here by the name of Langthwaite Beck and whilst it may not be the most desirable feature of the town, it is important, marking the boundary between this and South Elmsall. It runs for a length of 3.22 km. I found the path close by to it to be fairly interesting all in itself for a few reasons.
Quite why can be discovered as we finish off the SESKU area with SOUTH KIRKBY AND MOORTHORPE.

SOUTH KIRKBY AND MOORTHORPE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - The population stated at 1:57 was in error. Please ignore the figure of 10,979, as it is the 2001 census figure. The 2011 figure is the most recent and it is this - 11,105 - that is stated in the introduction (1:26) - The Grove, the Town Council's base, used to be a Roman Catholic Convent until the 1970s. It's referenced by Convent Avenue, one of the streets we see in the drive around. - Langthwaite Grange Industrial Estate was originally opened in 1949 by the then Trade Minister Harold Wilson who later became Prime Minister . It was Wakefield district's first. - The industrial estate is likely bigger than the 29.000 square feet stated as m source may have been referencing only part of it. - South Kirkby Academy is a primary school and not a secondary as was stated. - On the waste ground shown at 17:05 there used to be a pub/club which became derelict and was demolished a year or two ago. It was known as Emjays but the building was various things over the years, including a Roman Catholic club. - Where Stockingate Primary School.os located there used to be a mill. Over the road was a pub, known as The Swinger - Clock Row clock was formerly the meeting point of the local hunt. There was a local clockmaker in Moorthorpe of note too. - Something I forgot to mention was the Priory Benefice of All Saints South Kirkby, St James Ryhill, St Lukes Grimethorpe and St Pauls Brierley, in this episode.

No mention of the old mill which was situated where stockingate primary school is now. Across the road where mcolls is used to be a pub. It was known as the swinger.

I was born in my grandmother’s house in Cambridge St and went to Moorthorpe Primary School in the late 60s. I think your video might even have shown the house where I was born, and I certainly recognised my schoolmate’s house opposite clock corner. Thanks for doing these videos and bringing back memories to an expat now in Australia.

Clock Row clock was formerly the meeting point of the local hunt, for obvious reasons I guess. There was a local clockmaker in Moorthorpe of note too. The waste ground was a club known at a time as Emjays but various things over the years, including a Roman Catholic club. Thanks for mentioning Arthur, what a guy.
