As an iPhone user in the US I used to care if people didn’t have iPhones in high school because everyone else cared but as I grew up I realized that it doesn’t matter at all and it’s stupid to judge someone based on their phone.

As an iPhone user, I can say it is stupid to look down on someone based on their phone. The Fold is even more expensive than an iPhone.

People seem a bit simple and base their lives around brands, cars, phones, clothes, and in general status. I had this experience in the US where this person on a coffee shop had an iPhone XS and criticized me for having an S23 Ultra. I had a good laugh after that.

iPhone uses Samsung screens, memories and certain chips, it began to include more cameras like Android, it uses Sony cameras, much of its software is adapting to how Android works, it may use artificial intelligence developed by Google

I live in Busan, South Korea. The flex culture here is unbelievable. Everything from the outfits (brands) you wear, to the car you drive, to the places you go to eat. As a foreigner, the way it seems to me is that nearly everything is done to show status or clout. Because of this people come across as more vain than the average person would in the states. It also comes across as people will “enjoy” or do things simply because other people have done it, not because it’s something good. Like they wouldn’t have made that choice do go somewhere, do something or eat at a place if they didn’t feel compelled to also show their status by following suit in the same set of actions that everyone else did. I think that’s just part of the culture at the end of the day. A big part of it is showing other Koreans you’ve “made it.” Don’t get me started on how big paying in installments for things people can’t actually afford. Or guys being “car poor” to finance a super expensive vehicle in order to show off. People literally go broke trying to show they’ve made it when it’s one big facade.

It's ridiculous to me how some people judge someone entirely based on the phone they use. I see this problem a lot, especially here in the US, where a majority are iPhone users. So mass stereotypes and false claims have formed over the years. You could pull out the most expensive Samsung/Android phone, and an iPhone user here will still call you broke or cheap. A lot of Apple users seem to believe that they're top-notch and surpass everything else in the market just because they got an apple logo on the back of their phone.

Back in high-school, there was people telling me "How can you use a Galaxy Note 8 ?!" And then when they saw me playing Zelda Spirit Tracks with the S-Pen, they were like "How can I do that on my iPhone ?" I was very happy to say "You can't" 😈

One thing I noticed about South Korean’s is that they are overly obsessed with USA so much to the point that they’re ready to forget their own culture and identity.

You can’t really talk about the iPhone problem is South Korea without talking about the overall “luxury” problem. So much emphasis is given to owning luxury brands it’s crazy - no matter what your income is, people will save up and buy luxury items not to even show off, but to simply fit in. IPhone just has the “luxury” image in South Korea, which is why it sells so well for people in the 20s even at the sacrifice of usability.

I don't think people understand. South Korea has some of the highest rates of suicide in the entire world, and people practically get bullied to death for simply existing there. Everything is just a game where people are governed by "societal pressures" to decide how they want to live their life. So quite frankly, people getting judged based on the phone they have is not surprising.

South Korea is a Capitalistic overly-materialistic dystopia as much as it's North Neighbor being a Communist Dynasty dystopia, so I'm half-surprised with this one. Expected that they'd go for an expensive brand, but unexpected that they'd go against their national brand.

As a Korean living in Korea, I use android (Galaxy S23+) because Samsung Pay (very convenient in Korea) and automatic call-record, and it's more than powerful for my daily needs. I have not yet met anyone who judges others by what phone they own, but I think it's a win that Galaxy phone can filter those toxic people out of my life too. (p.s I don't hate Apple products. I use iPad mini 6)

I live in Korea. It's not just about people taking memes seriously. The age of getting your first smartphone in Korea is an average fourth grader. At that age, parents have a lot of control, and of course, they have a lot of control over them. Not only do Android smartphones have an affordable model, but most Koreans in their teens and 20s have a strong perception of Android phones such as LG and Samsung as "the phones which young children are managed and controlled by their parents." On the other hand, the iPhone has a strong perception of "uncontrolled free phones." Of course, the brand's image and many factors will affect it, but the most important reason seems to come from their perception of past experiences.

Overseas Korean here. This is definitely true! However, I think it's similar in Korea as it is with western countries that lowkey broke people buy iPhones to signal wealth (which they don’t have). Like my unemployed cousin has the newest iPhone Pro but I‘m like why would you need that 😂 On the other end of the spectrum, few of my affluent friends all use Samsung.

I actually heard a girl say this same thing a few weeks ago here in the U.S. So it's not just limited to Korea. I find it hilarious because Samsung makes the screen for IPhone.

South Koreans obsession with brand obsession is just on whole another level, you can just see how everyone almost wears brands like Nikes or North Face all around their outfit also the obsession with luxury designer brands like Chanel, Dior and others. The Idol, K-pop and celebrity culture also promotes these brands and expensive designer things, because of that young teenage girls are asking for designer luxury bags to their parents just because their favorite Idol is the face of Dior, VL and so on. It's like almost 90% of Koreans really care and spend a lot of money on their favorite brands, new and latest IPhone just for the external validation they wanna get or fit in with what others are also having. Don't get me wrong, I myself suffer from that and really care about the outfits, brands, gadgets, accessories and things I carry but I'm trying my best to change and nowadays wearing clothes and shoes that I really like and not just because they are expensive or for the external validation.

As a nerd, there are a lot of things I would commend Apple on, like M-chips, but this "luxury" branding and shame-tactics (making the green bubble and artifically decreasing quality of videos and such for it) is actually why I will never buy any Apple product, not because of their quality. I was once a poor kid and it sticks with you.

Ok so I've had people from my lecture (i study marketing) straight up ignore my friend and i during a group project because we don't have iphones. They claimed they "couldn't airdrop the pictures" we wanted to use for the project and straight up left lmao. We were flabbergasted to say the least.

In my country, there are actually iPhone rental services. These services are typically used by people who want to create a certain impression on others, such as dates, old high school classmates, or family members.

I had a Galaxy flip phone earlier this year. When I went to South Korea for vacation, I was excited to shop for pretty phone casing for it. I was greatly disappointed though with how few options I had when I got there. The stores I went to all carried a variety of iPhone cases, but only a very few cases for my Galaxy phone. And there I was thinking South Korea would give me tons of options since it’s the home of Samsung. 😢 I guess that just shows how much South Koreans prefer iPhones over Samsung and other Android phones.

At this rate, using an iPhone is a fashion statement. The big apple logo on its back really reminds me of loud luxury brands. It's big, it catches your attention and especially it looks extravagant. Does the phone look good? Maybe, but that isn't what their users are looking for

Here in Brazil it's the same thing, iPhone has a social status symbol, sometimes an old iPhone is more valued than an Android flagship, in addition to the issue of devaluation in the sale of the used device, in February/2023 an S23 Ultra was launched for U$1700 and an iPhone 14 Pro Max cost U$1700, today, a year later, the used iPhone 14 Pro Max costs $1100 and an S23 Ultra $800... Even an iPhone 13 Pro Max today costs more than an S23 Ultra, about $900...

Someone with an iPhone looks to me as if they're old and/or don't know how to handle money. Especially if they've got everything Apple and get the latest phone every year. They're just wasting money for perceived convenience. Maybe it's also a little different here in the Netherlands. Now for the question "are you broke?" Well, I'm in my twenties without any debts and can save more than half of what I earn from working at a tech company full time, can you say the same?

I currently work here in Korea and yes I can testify that most teenagers or young adults here are using iphones I rarely see anyone using Samsung. On the other hand most of my coworkers here on our company who are on their 40s-50s all of them are using Samsung 😅

I guess it is a worldwide thing, to be honest. It is just that social dynamics are a bit different in South Korea with Samsung being a huge Korean company. I live in Russia and a huge percentage of young people in big cities tend to prefer iPhones. No one really mocks Android users but it is still a stable trend. Just a few years ago (2019), I've read that 50% of young people (18-24) in Russia own an iPhone with peaks in huge cities like St. Petersburg (60%). Anecdotally, most of young women I know use an iPhone. It all has become especially weird when Russia invaded Ukraine and the country along with many companies got sanctioned. Nowadays, iPhones in Russia are much more expensive, harder to get, and even less repairable since Apple has ceased to operate in Russia. Moreover, you can't use Apple Pay and national contactless payment systems like Mir Pay and Sber Pay are only available on Android; you can't even legally download a banking app from App Store because nearly all Russian banks are sanctioned, so you either have to go to bank's office to get an app installed or wait until app developers temporarily upload it to App Store while masquerading as something unrelated to the organization. And even when taking all of this into account, people still keep buying iPhones. Such a clownery.

I'm an old iPhone user, and I have been using them since the very first day I realized I couldn't afford it unless I ask my parents. We live in such a delusional world it's unbelievably sad. As an iPhone user myself I can say that I love android phones but especially Samsung phones. Androids have much more customization and more freedom when compared to IPhones. To dismiss someone because of the type of phone they use is childish and should be considered as a mental illness.

I used to live in Korea. Yes, this ridiculous opinion is very commonplace. I heard it from university students (always female, mind you) five to six years ago and was routinely chastised by my female friends for using a Galaxy phone. Young, attractive women see themselves (somewhat accurately) as part of an elite club, so they adopt this opinion publicly as a way of signaling that they belong to this group. The younger and hotter a Korean woman is, the more likely she is to adopt this stance. Normally, you would disregard someone who says something so inane, but when more than half the women you're trying to date in college talk like this, it leaves you feeling like you have no option but to get an iPhone. If you've ever formally studied the Cook-Gruetter Stages of Ego Development in psychology courses, nearly all South Korean women in their 20s fall into the Conformist stage. They don't reach the Self-Conscious stage until their mid-thirties, by which time they're married to the guy who had an iPhone in his late 20s. The American woman at 5:14 is saying in English exactly what 60% of Korean women in their 20s (and 90% of attractive women in their 20s) privately believe. They were completely unaware that my Galaxy Note cost more than the latest iPhone, and even when I told them, they didn't care.

I have legitimately had people act super snobby towards me because I use android. Yes I am geeky. I have a passion for technology as I use a Framework laptop running linux, google pixel 8 pro running grapheneOS and enjoy building computers. Does this make me any weirder of a person? no. But I'm glad my girlfriend understands that despite using an iphone and living in Japan where the majority of people use iphones. I always assumed "iPhone vs Android" was a third-world thing. Like in Russia, where as Apple products are more than 10 times more expensive than if it were with shipping it directly from US. So people who buy iPhones are either rich or stupid or both.

I have a Macbook Pro and an iPad and trust me when I say I can buy any phone I want. However, I have a Poco X3 Pro and before that was only using Galaxy Note phones. After being an Android user since the beginning of smartphones I have not once considered to get an iPhone despite being in the Apple ecosystem. The X3 Pro does more than what I need it to do and the battery life is amazing. Apple products are definitely more marketing than usability and I'm not a silly person that would pay $1500 just to make phone calls. Android is the way to go for smartphones. As far as personal computers go though I'm an Apple user through and through.

It’s very interesting in America because average people who don’t have internet friends or friends in other countries, simply don’t use chat apps. We just text each other. Americans actually look at you funny if you ask them to download an IM app. So since apple baked their IM service into their texting app, and doesn’t allow it to be used on other non apple devices, it creates this weird class system based on green and blue texts.

The huge significance of these numbers is that the 65% young iPhone users aren’t likely to switch growing up which can completely change the market share for Samsung going forward if this trend sticks

I want to address something that may have been omitted from this video. While it is generally true that a lot of younger generations in South Korea do lean towards iPhone, but this has a lot more reasons than what the brand of that bit off Apple appears to be. Many in their teens and early 20s like iPhones for other reasons than the price and the brand, 1) Early on in their life, many kids are bound to phones known as "키즈폰" or "Kids Phones", which are basically the cheapest, slowest Android phone made by Samsung, converted more or less into a restricted smartphone with full parental control and location tracking, because "safety" or something. This is how a lot of kids in their youth are introduced to Android / Samsung's Galaxy Brand, which turns them away from Android. 2) The more recent issue of "GOS", or "Game Optimizing Service" was brought up, which Samsung was accused and caught red handed throttling (gimping) flagship smartphones for the purpose of controlling thermals. While the reasoning behind that seems to be okay, many younger generations that were actually interested in Samsung and were buying their latest flagships were turned off by how a flagship phone had to severely limit performance without the customer knowing or having a choice to turn it off. The issue was largely swept under the rug, which prompted a lot of hardcore Android (Samsung Galaxy, since that's the only Android manufacture we have in S.K) to switch. The S23 series, with their TSMC manufactured chips, seems to have none of the issues of the past S22 series with their Samsung Foundry manufactured chips with poor yield rates, but when comparing eco-systems of Samsung and Apple, I would still have to say Apple does their eco-systems much better compared to that of Samsung, but Samsung will soon catch up to it. definitely return back to Samsung.
