In i-D’s latest video series, tattoo artist and activist Grace Neutral explores how younger generations are challenging traditional views around beauty and body image across the world. Through a number of dramatic body modifications, Grace has evolved from self-confessed alternative weirdo to actual pixie dream-girl with purple eyes, pointed elf ears, a forked-tongue, scarification and no belly button. Interested in ideas of alternative beauty and pushing boundaries of positive body image, the 27-year-old navigates us through changing attitudes to how we look. In the first four episodes of Beyond Beauty, we follow the tattoo-covered alien princess to South Korea as she investigates the ways in which Seoul’s youth conform and challenge mainstream beauty ideals. Although it’s socially acceptable for teenagers to have cosmetic surgery within its six billion dollar domestic beauty industry, it is illegal to be a tattoo artist. From underground tattoo studios to specialist club nights, Grace meets the young South Koreans embracing alternative ideas of beauty and discovers the impact it has on their lives.

please hire grace permanently. she's very caring and kind and has a very pleasant, gentle voice. she seems to be good at balancing hosting the show with actually caring and connecting with the people the show covers. i would love to see more of her!

Well beauty is subjective, so for you to say that people are required to find her beautiful is bullshit. Maybe you are referring to her having a "beautiful soul" or something like that. But since you directly mentioned her looks and tattoos, I have to assume you are referring to physical beauty. In that case you are wrong with your conclusion.

The Korean woman is striking beautifull and the tattoos make her more interesting. The parents seem so loving to her, it is not that they reject her choices but the korean society is gradually moving to a more open society when it comes to tattoos, they dont want to see her have a hard life because of that. How her parents took it was beautiful. They weren't worried about their daughters interests, they were worried about how people would accept their daughter. Not a lot of people, even in more accepting societies, accept things like tattoos or body mods. Her parents handled it wonderfully.

+mightytaiger Assuming you're Korean, I won't say you don't know what you're talking about. No one actually said tattoos are illegal. The comment about zooming in on them was made by the girl's mother to highlight the fact that the media uses tattoos to create an association with a negative image. And as a person with tattoos who lives in Korea, I feel that more than just grandparents give a shit about them. I think the attitude towards towards alternative fashion and art is changing here, but it has a hell of a long way to go.

What an amazing video. As a Korean guy with tattoos who was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, this has never been even a minor issue for me. I forget sometimes that something so commonplace here is still regarded with such stigma in my motherland. And props to Grace. She has a very pleasant demeanour and way of speaking.

Recently got into this series and I love it as well. Being Chinese, there are the same stigma's so watching up to the scene at the playground totally hit home as well and the "sickness" feeling of showing revealing to your parents came rushing back. Love the series, keep up the great work!

I'm really proud of a girl this covered in tattoos to reveal this to her parents in a society where it's so frowned upon. It's truly incredible, but what's more incredible is how well they actually took it, and how their support for their beloved daughter outshone what they've known, learned and believed for decades about people with tattoos. She's beautiful. Even for a person as classy as her in, let's say, the US, it's a bit unusual to be that covered in tattoos. She reveals this to her parents, and here I am in the US, with one tattoo, which has been one of the most difficult, and at the same time happiest decisions of my life, unable to tell my parents. My father would probably kick me out of the house if I told him, and that's nothing compared to this. I wish my parents were as open as these are. It was a fantastic moment to be captured. This entire series is easily one of the most interesting, and especially well-filmed VICE-produced series I've ever watched. Cinematographer Tom Seal, I may not know who you are, and I may not have seen any of your other work, but you did a fantastic job.

I'm Jewish, and because of everything that happened during the holocaust it is considered bad to get any kind of tattoo on your body. My great grandma was very against them, and because of that my mom was very against them too. It took me until I was 18 to tell my mom that I really wanted tattoos, and would get them no matter what. She cried. I cried too cause I thought it would ruin our relationship. Now almost a year after I did that she talks to me openly and excitedly about what tattoos I'm going to get. She says a lot how when I get my next tattoo, she needs to be there with me so that she can hold my hand. My mom and I have grown a lot closer now, and I think it's because I've been more open with her since confronting her about the issues with tattoos.

In the Torch chapter K'doshim it states that in order to be buried with your family you must not have any self endoned damaged to skin (tattos) it's not because of the Holocaust.

+8bit72HAC I hid my tattoos from my parents for a good 5 years. I always thought they would disowned me if they ever discovered I had them, but it wasn't like that at all when they found out about them. While their views on tattoos are still somewhat negative, they also understand that times have changed and that society (at least in the US) is more accepting of tattoos. While it hasn't made us "closer" it has enabled us to be more open about things which is always good.

Chenyu Fan I'm glad that it turned out well for you too ^.^ parents (if they're good parents at least) have a tendency to love their kids and support them no matter what. I only realized this after telling my mom about my view on tattoos. So hooray for us and our parents!

Love this series! Grace is such a lovely person. When i got my first tattoo on my shoulder blade, I was really afraid of how my mom / parents would react, so I hid it for the first year or so, till I accidentally forgot to put on my cardigan. My mom never said any bad thing about it, just asked if I wasn't afraid of the pain. Now that I got both my upper arms done (working on a half-sleeve and a full-sleeve), she again only asked about the pain. When my older brother said he wanted a 3/4-sleeve done, she told us she didn't like tattoos. She never tried to tell us not to do it though. I think her parents reacted really nicely. Her mom crying was the worst (because really, who can watch his/her own mom cry and not be sad), but she tried to understand. It's going into the right direction! When I'm in grandma-age, no one will ask "how do your tattoos look now", because many others will be covered as well. So, as some other people said before, it just needs some time. A few years or centuries...

dads in these types of cultures and most cultures around the world are seen as the head of the family, so lots of kids look for their approval, or it could just be that she has a very strong daughter father bond.

It's a societal thing. In the U.K., the US, Canada, etc. either parent can be the dominant one, the bringer-home of bacon. In other societies like in China, Korea, etc. this falls to the father, and so his approval and accaptance is paramount. You can WANT mum's. You NEED his.

Did anyone else think it was really weird that they interviewed Grace after Seoji revealed her tattoos to her parents? I want to know how SEOJI felt, not Grace... As a tattooed Korean-American woman with Korean parents, this video really hit home. My parents have also never seen any of my tattoos and I'm scared to death to show them... Really wish they had interviewed Seoji afterwards. Would've been nice to hear her insight.

Its not that they object to her tattoos, its that they object to the prejudice that choosing that particular way to express herself in their country will invite into her life. The daughter is a trailblazer, but they don't want her to be. I get that.
