No one thought that the referee's decisions affected the outcome of the match. We just could feel that they put a lot of preparation and effort into it. And in 2002, the Korean team was the most popular. Shut up if you don't know. Korea won fairly. At the time, Western media did not allow Asian countries to advance to the semifinals. Anyway Guus hiddink hit a career high and could manage big clubs again. ( Before taking charge of the Korean national team, he was in a slump. )

Soccer wasn't really a popular sport in Korea back then, so I think 90% of Koreans watching the world cup (myself included) didn't know much about the sport aside from the "goal-in =good" rule. Now we look back and can see all the propaganda and corrupted referees,, but back then, it was a 100% excitement and joy that Korea could achieve such a feat. It sucks that the game was heavily affected by the corrupt referees, since Koreans were already super excited about the 16th ranking, and there really was no need to force the undeserved 4th ranking. It's a shame and I hope it never happens in Korea again;;;;
That's a stupid conspiracy, South Korea just went on a good run and played better as for National team as they had home advantage cause it was hosted in their home country.

No it was not. Korea beat Portugal in the next round. Hiddink knew the potential of korean team and the high spirit of the whole country and said in the match with Portugal, the match will extend to overtime match. It was such a fierce match between the two teams that it had to be won by penalty shoot out kicks after having used the over time match. Korea won the match with the kicks. At that time the Korean team was almost invincible. The team moral is important but they had been trained fiercely by Guss hiddink. They were playing a new style of soccer at that time.
I was stationed in S.Korea (ahn jung whan) scored the game-winning goal against Italy the very team that fired him because he was playing for his home country in the World Cup.. South Korea to this day is my favorite team of all time

The best performance in history by an underdog team... I have no doubts about their victory. In June 2002, I enjoyed with my USFK colleagues. It was the best day in Korea.
