The official theme song of the South Melbourne Swans Football Club.
The South Melbourne Swans are an AFL football club established in 1874 but relocated to Sydney in 1982. They played in the VFA until the breakaway completion (VFL) was established. They were apart of the original 8 teams to join the VFL in 1897. Since then they have gone on to win 5 premierships, them being the 1909, 1918 and 1933 VFL Grand Finals as South Melbourne, as well as 2005 and 2012 AFL Grand Finals as Sydney. The Swans relocated to Sydney because the club was in debt, where seeing very little success, few fans came to any games and the AFL was eager to expand. If one club was to fold first, it would be the one with the longest premiership drought and the smallest profits.
Lyrics:
(opening)
Cheer, cheer, the red and the white,
honour the name by day and by night.
Lift that noble banner high,
shake down the thunder from the sky.
What though, the odds be great or small,
South will go in and win overall.
While her loyal sons are marching,
onward to victory.
(instrumental)
Cheer, cheer, the red and the white,
honour the name by day and by night.
Lift that noble banner high,
shake down the thunder from the sky.
What though, the odds be great or small,
South will go in and win overall.
While her loyal sons are marching,
onward to victory.
