I wrote this song around 2007. It is the oldest song that I still sing today. When I was kid I spent a lot of time with my grandparents in the summer time. Although located in different counties, they all lived in Central Kentucky. My Dad's Mom and Dad both remarried 3 times, so I had more than the typical two sets of Grandparents. My folks wanted me to be around old school, hardworking, character, and traditional ways so they made sure I got my fill of Grandma and Grandpa's house as a kid. I sure am glad I did too, it was hands down some of the best times of my life.
This song is specifically about my Mother's folks, my Grandma and Grandpa Lincoln and Frances Varney. They had an acreage outside of town in Bullitt County with just enough dirt to grow as many gardens as a person could ever want, and they did.
They had three huge gardens, fruit trees, and a dog lot full of hunting dogs. Maintaining all of that was a full time job. This song is a reflection of that time in my life, primarily the first verse and chorus. The second first was written during the time when my folks moved out of the state and I didn't have any family around.
..."the dew on the lawn
stayed 'till the coffee was all gone
and the summer sun beat down
'till the moon washes the heat away"...
