Re: People leaving the theater. My friends and I went to see this in the theater. This lady comes in and sits behind us with 3 kids, the oldest was maybe 11. We tried to explain to her that this was not a movie for kids and she became indignant and yelled at us for a couple of minutes. They left about 30 seconds into "Uncle Fucker".

The reveal of Kenny's face and voice was a big deal, as it had never been done to that point. And the person who voiced unmuffled Kenny was Mike Judge, creator of Beavis And Butthead. Fun fact: the original title was going to be "South Park: Hell Freezes Over" but the MPAA would not let them use the word "Hell" in a cartoon. Matt and Trey flippantly said 'How about 'Bigger, Longer, and Uncut'"? and were told that was okay because none of those words were banned. They immediately contacted the studio and told them to begin the marketing before the MPAA realized they let them get away with making the title into a dick joke.

Great reaction George and Simone! FUN FACTS: South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut intentionally went up to using 399 swear words because the MPAA would have given the film an NC-17 rating if at least 400 swear words were used in the film. Adding to that.. In the Guinness World Records 2001, this film was said to have the most profanity used in an animated film. The book cited a total of 399 swear words, including 146 uses of the word "f***," along with 199 offensive gestures and 221 acts of violence. The song "Blame Canada" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original song, but lost to Phil Collins song "You'll Be in my Heart" from Disney's Tarzan (1999) This led to numerous jabs at Phil Collins during season 4 of South Park.

I was a manager at a theater chain called Regal Cinemas in northeast Ohio when this movie came out. My primary role was the "booth manager". This meant that I got to build and put together the multiple 35mm reels to form the movie and screen every movie on the Thursday night before the Friday premier to the public. I was already a South Park fan at the time, so I already knew this was going to be rated R for a reason. Understand, that this was before the internet as we know it today. Info was not that easily accessible. We spent the first morning on that Friday creating and printing multiple flyers to be posted all over the theater (especially at the front box office), informing customers that this is not a cartoon for kids. And yet, we had so many mothers and grandmothers and parents bringing in their 7-year olds, thinking this was a Disney movie or something. I had to give out so many refunds, lol.

I believe she went under the name "Shannon Cassidy" during her work with South Park, since most of her other notable roles are for Disney and other children's media. I think funnier, when the show got picked they moved away from doing it by hand, but wanted to maintain the look, so they found the one program that would let them do that, Maya. For the origin of the Brian Boitano joke you need to watch the cartoon that started it all, "The Spirit of Christmas." And yes, he was really really famous. We idolized our Olympic champions back then, as it was pushed on us by one of the four big channels. It's a perfectly fine film if Simone can laugh at the "bleed five days and not die" joke and George can laugh at the chinese song parody bits. 18:01 Simone's face tightens into anger while George loses it. They got the ViewMaster joke!!!!! I would have guessed that would be a generation gap. Winona Ryder wasn't particularly loved or hated? She just was involved in minor shoplifting incidents despite being a millionaire so you could imagine she'd do something as random as ping pong ball tricks? So many good songs in this movie.
@RedDragon924

@Cheepchipsable
@Cheepchipsable 10 месяцев назад
The ping pong ball joke was about a lewd kind of cabaret act performed with ping pong balls in Vietnam when US war was happening. It became legendary, a bit like the Mexican dancer/prostitute and donkey meme. I think Winona was kind of "Americas Sweetheart" at the time, had a lot of hit movies. Pretty sure the picture above Satan's bed is Skeet Ulrich. (he has a bit part in the movie "As Good As It Gets", which is a MUST see if you haven't already) The V-chip was a proposed bit of hardware which was going to be put into media devices to block programs based on the programs ratings.(Just did a quick google and apparently they are implemented in TVs in the US and Canada)

Ryder's shoplifting incident occurred a couple years after this movie was released. In '99, she still would have had her waifish, wholesome image; the last person you'd think of to do the ping pong ball bit. (And remember how that gag ends; the vulgarity came from our own minds.)

I'm about 20 years older than you and I laughed just as hard. So much in fact that I actually fell out of my seat at least once. Remember how topical some of it was? This was back before South Park could put out a even a topical TV episode as quickly as they got a reputation for a few years after that, but it seemed like Hossain had died. It was shocking to see him being included in this movie! I heard that they really rushed to include that part. I really loved all the songs and I appreciated the the original work and the parody. I was also a fan of figure skating, so the non sequitur of Brian Boitano being mentioned out of the blue hit me as extra funny. Also, I had camped out for Star Wars, The Phantom Menace tickets earlier that year and I worked in tech, so there was so much about this movie that hit on the nose for me! The creators of South Park have never said why Canadians are drawn that way. The most common fan theory is that since Terrance & Phillip are a representation of the South Park show within the South Park universe, they wanted to draw them with "even crappier" animation to mock themselves. Then since Terrance & Phillip are Canadian, they just decided to draw all Canadians that way.

That's why they make each episode in a week, because they know they can't make the episodes before with more time. And they have tried. But they just can't do it. It's always delayed to the last week, and then they have to rush it to finish on time. And they only miss one deadline, and it's not by their fault.

Using the same person in this movie was a call back. Also related is the George Clooney cameo, as he sent out copies of the short as a video Christmas card, which helped popularize it early on.

As far as the "aboot" thing...."aboot" is like the exaggerated, satirical version of how Canadians pronounce about and similar words. But I live in the US and have followed multiple Canadian content creators who generally have an unnoticeable accent, yet they pronounce about like "aboat" rather than "abowt" which is how most Americans would say it - so it's more subtle than "aboot" but definitely a thing, though not really all that different from how midwesterners pronounce their A's compared to people in other parts of the country. "House" is another word, that I've heard pronounced like "hose" but with like a hard "S", so I guess like "hoase", rather than "howse". So it seems some Canadians just have a way of pronouncing the "ou" sound that sounds more like "oa" rather than "ow", but admittedly not "oo". "Aboot" is just what you get when you go to make fun of the "aboat" pronunciation and exaggerate the accent several times over.
@superknibs
@superknibs 10 месяцев назад
You gotta think of the Canadian accent as not one thing. Just like I don't expect a Texan to say Kawfee like a New yorker. The accent changes throughout the country. The aboot thing is more eastern Canadian, western provinces have their subtle tweaks, French Canadians have their way of talking and the maritimes sound drunk to everyone. 😉

I would like to note that the clitoris in this movie looks like it does because the entire structure of the clitoris was not discovered until 1998, and then only released to the public in 2005 when the structure was revisited in a later study. All well after I had my first child, when I was 25. Which makes that particular joke in this movie funnier to me- because they still hadn't found (all of) it, either.

Man, I like to think back to the packed theater when I went to see this. I was seventeen going on eighteen which meant, according to theater standards, I could be the "adult" accompanying my younger cousins when we all gathered up and went to see this when it opened. It was "South Park" at its early height of popularity, we watched the show when it episodes came out on VHS to rent, and we all loved it. I recall Trey Parker and Matt Stone talking about Mike Judge's decision at the last minute to tone down some of the more colorful language for his feature length "Beavis and Butthead Do America" the year before in order to maintain a PG-13 rating; they weren't going to do that whatsoever. Quite the opposite, and I think it helped the satire hit a bit harder. The entire theater was just wall-to-wall laughter. 1999 was a great year for movies.

About 60% of the first episode was made from paper cut-outs, but they finished it with computer animation (using Alias Poweranimator, I think) and that is how it’s been done since. They scanned in various kinds of construction paper to get the textures so it would still look like paper and card.
