It's unbelievable how obscure some of the South Park references are. They've referenced movies I hadn't even heard of, much less seen. Like the episode with the Hummels in the nursing home references the Sean Penn prison movie "Bad Boys" (1983).

@@psychedelicpunk5031 It's the opposite it should be mandatory for kids to have to watch South Park to grow some skin, I can't believe the things I see go on at colleges these last 5-6 years. It used to be a place where you would grow, make offensive mistakes and learn from those mistakes. Now being offensive is considered worse than being actually dangerous, and it's quite frankly scary.

@@dcworld4349I think it depends on about what age of kids are we talking. But I agree with all the rest of what you said. American youth are such a sissies overall. Of course most or at least a good portion have a sense of humor and can take jokes and discuss controversial topics like adults. You shouldn't back down in front of sissies unless your future will be in serious danger, I mean pick your battles but don't care too much about other people's feelings.

The, "He is Risen" song in the background when Jesus appears is sung by Michael McLean, normally. It's obviously Trey singing that part, but it's normally a Sunday song you hear on the local radio in Idaho or Utah. Mostly those who grew up Mormon would catch that reference. Of course the Easter Hare is a personification of Eostre, the Anglo Saxon goddess of the moon who was depicted as very beautiful but with the ears of a hare instead of human ears. The Catholic church sought to usurp her festival by moving the date of one of theirs to cover it up. It's interesting that, in recent years, the Easter Hare has become the Easter Rabbit and then the Easter Bunny with people ascribing more and more masculine traits to her (as if bringing the eggs is a manly thing or something). There you go. The more you know. And you thought Bunny Girls were a modern thing :p.

Damn man I just love your edits, there's so many things that are weirdly authentic in South Park that I didn't know about, like the Easter Egg painting kit and the Hair Club for Men ad. I've said it before, you add so much to the viewing experience, be it references or Japanese translations (which I'd watched the show for decades and never knew were actually hiding other jokes). 0:40 Back in the days Eastern was pre-Christian pagan holiday of spring and reborn of nature. And it have had two main symbols: an egg and a rabbit. Because first Christians were oppressed and preoccupied by Roman Empire, up to public execution, they had to hide for centuries. And they came up with idea of covering day Christ's resurrections as Eastern. Even after Roman Empire de facto split and both part choose Christianity as new state religious, people continue celebrate Eastern same way for this very day. And we color eggs (words of Christ) and rabbit (followers of Christ) hiding them, to be later find by children (faithful folks) as tribute for early generation of Christians who straggled with expressing their religious publicly. Awesome story, if you think about that. However, because not much people actually aware about this story, Trey and Matt decided to make fun of people's unawareness of such fundamental holyday in Christianity.

The truth is that like many Christian traditions and holidays, Easter is originally a pagan holiday. It was for Ostara, the goddess of fertility and reproduction. Eggs and Rabbits were two of her symbols. It started out that we used to color the eggs with blue and red dye. Colors for life and death. On the spring equinox, villagers would lay out bedding areas in the fields and adorn them with colored eggs. That is where we get the idea for an Easter Egg Hunt. Then couples who were pregnant or wanted to get pregnant would copulate in these areas and if Ostara blessed their union, not only did they expect to become with healthy child, but it was also said to make the next harvest more bountiful. When the anglo-saxons started to take over Europe and Englund (correct spelling at the time) one method they used for converting the heathens was to take elements from the sun religions and merge them with elements of Christianity. Easter is just one example. Did you know you can actually buy a glaive, though it comes with warning to not throw it like a boomerang.

This is so interestingly layered, because in the da Vinci code, the symbolism, if I remember correctly, in the painting is that it’s representative of a fertility symbol, and in this case, it’s an egg, but also the actual origin of Easter is a pagan fertility celebration 😮

So here's the connection with Jesus rising from the dead and the Easter Bunny delivering colored eggs. Eggs represent life and rebirth. The goddess of fertility (birth) and Spring is known as 'Ostara', 'Eastre' or 'Eostre', and her animal sign is a rabbit. Thus the Easter bunny delivery eggs as a symbol of rebirth.

FYI, the name "Easter" comes from Eostre, an ancient Germanic goddess from pre-Christian times in Germanic Europe like England and Scandinavia and Netherlands and (duh) Germany. Eostre was the goddess of the Springtime, and so was associated with fertility, hence rabbits and eggs. Basically it's a holdover from pagan times that had its meaning lost, but we still do stuff like hide eggs for children lol

To answer Stan's question, the eggs and rabbits have nothing to do with Jesus. The name "Easter" comes from the name "Ishtar", the pagan goddess of fertility and reproduction. Rabbits and eggs represent fertility and reproduction. They are symbols left over from the days when it was a pagan holiday, back before the christian church attached Jesus to it and eventually stole the holiday from the pagans. The same way the church stole the Christmas holiday from the pagan harvest festival (which occurred in late December), by attaching Jesus' birth to it...despite the fact that Jesus was most likely born in the spring or summer. Great video Dash, as always! 👍

It’s great to see someone else watch your favorite shows for the first time but it is so painful to watch them not understand things because they are simply too young and/or inexperienced with the world to understand the nuance. I saw another reactor review this episode and understandably completely missed the DaVinci Code parody (because that book was written 20 years ago). The tradition of coloring Easter Eggs seems to date back to the Middle Ages. Kings and lords probably gave decorated eggs to their courts on Easter because that was the end of Lent. The earliest example we have of this is in 1096 when King Edward I decorated eggs with golden leaves and gave them to his court but it probably didn’t originate with him since the tradition also is found in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Edward was Roman Catholic and the schism happened in 1056, about 4 decades prior to Edward I.

In ancient times, the Kelts of Central Europe celebrated their goddess of fertility at the beginning of Spring. That goddess was called Isatar (Ishtar in the Middle East, where the word Easter comes from). As a goddess of fertility she was symbolized as a rabbit. When the Roman Catholic church stole the holyday from the Kelts and replaced it with the celebration of the resurrection of Jezus, the rabbit was the only thing that survived from the ancient Keltic tradition.
