The funny thing is always... you are probably the judge of the right interpretation... it's literally called an interpretation for a reason. There really can't be "a right one" because then you could just write it down and the subject matter would be closed.

Not to mention "Raisins", where he constantly dwells on his depression due to the breakup, and ends up joining the goth kids as a result, only to realise it was furthering the issue.

The end of the following episode kinda shows he's not exactly back to normal, though. He still had liquor hidden in his drawer that he took a swig of before leaving with the others. Those two episodes hit me way too hard as I relate 100%. I can barely bring myself to watch them.

That's a fair point. Wendy tends to fight for good causes and what not, but isn't painfully preachy like many characters similar to her might be nowadays. You actually empathize with Wendy more because she's kind of the only one who truly cares in a world of apathy. She doesn't fake it like Cartman during his PC phase or even PC principal himself to an extent.

@@urphakeandgey6308 most people are not like Wendy or Cartman, most people are just Stan and Kyle, who are kind in nature but can be influenced by ideas. Randy initially was extremely pro-democrat, but Stan didn't turn out to be a "woke" character because he saw through Randy's belief was not based on virtue and he kinda hates his dad. Kyle on the other hand has much less turbulent relationship with Gerald, an long-standing embodiment of a "liberal douche" character, so he tends to be comfortably more vocal and "woke" about social issues, whether his takes are right and reasonable, or hypocritical and selfish. Same goes for Kenny, Butters, Tolkien*, Craig, Jimmy, all the kids and their family define how they approach social issues or "things worth caring". These are very subtle yet very effective.

Twitter falls under the same curse Tumblr did, where people refuse to just admit they dislike or are uninterested in a piece of media. So they make sure to declare how problematic it is as a justification and declare people who enjoy said media are also problematic. Instead they basically say "this is bad and if you enjoy it or don't understand why its bad, then you're bad". As someone who grew up in a white town in the moutains that was covered in snow for at least a quarter of the year and was one of very few black kids, I spent most of my middle school to high school being called "Coon and Token". So to say there arent people out there who misconstrue the message, is being naive. My friend Victor unironically loved Cartman and would often, seriously, spew the jew hatred stuff and quote the H man, my guy. Not everyone, but I do think some people took that "its cool to not care" shit to heart.

This is why American media needs to be more upfront about the rating system. Here in Australia, back when cable/satellite was a thing, they would outright *announce* the rating at the start of the show (e.g. "the following programme is classified M, and is recommended for viewers 15 years and older"). Yet, in America, they just tucked the rating in the corner of the screen when the show starts, and can be easily missed. TF, America?

I and my friends _knew_ we weren't supposed to be watching South park when we were kids, staying up at sleepovers. We did it because it was a funny show and we wanted to. Hell, that lice episode traumatized the shit outta me 🤣 I still don't wanna watch it as an adult lol. Same goes for video games. My cousins and I used to go up to my uncle's room at my grandma's and play Resident Evil 2 on his Playstation. We called it the "zombie game" and ran around the neighborhood at cookouts, in a macabre game of tag where one person was the "zombie" shambling after everyone. And they always ran when no one was looking xD That decapitated Grey head on the opening screens scared the bejesus out of us. But we played it because nobody was supervising us and we wanted to. We knew we weren't old enough for that shit lol. When I went to my cousins house, we'd play grand theft auto San Andreas on their play station and run over hooked for their knives and money. Again, because our parents would never let us get that game at our house 😆 There is no ignorance of the rating system anymore. It's just apathy of parents

That was the entire plot of the first movie, published just one year after the show start airing, and the same idea has been floating around forever. It doesn't matter which country the works are from or what "ratings" they have, kids from around the world WILL find ways to consume them nonetheless. Matt and Trey have always known about this since the very beginning. The people who yell at the shows? They're no different to those MAC adults who would rather complain and cancel creators, because pretending to be revolutionists or yelling at social media gives them more senses of power and authority than sitting next to their kids and actually teaching them about things they see on TV.

This is also why I think many people are misunderstanding "Joining the Panderverse" to an extent. Everyone's quick to point out "you're not supposed to sympathize with Cartman! It makes fun of him because he's racist!" What they don't realize is that the same largely applies to black female Cartman as well. She just does it in reverse.

there are issues I would have never known about if it wasn't for SP. Matt and Trey portray things in a way that isn't overly preachy, digestible, and is just stupid enough to still be funny. People who often complain about the show are the ones that have never watched it

Thing is, there's stuff in SP that's too much for some people, but they still enjoy the show as a whole- you don't have to put a stamp of approval on everything a piece of media does just because you like said media. People need to understand that you can simply not like an episode or a show as a whole without harassing others for liking it. You can absolutely be annoyed by seeing it, but that's when you put on your adult pants, and say, "that's not for me, therefore, I won't look at it." For the record: this isn't to say that constructive criticism isn't good. All media can be criticized in good faith- but many times, these "critiques" are pedantic, vitriolic, and often untrue, dripping with bias against said media.

I guess the premise is that it's a cartoon and kids like cartoons, therefore trey and matt's disregard for your opinion has something to do with everyone else's disregard for your opinion. A lampoon of society's pretenses is just a response to society's pretenses, which will shape peoples' opinions just as much as any comedy or documentary.

Also, it's understandable that kids would think _South Park_ is a kids' show due to its bright, colourful and simple animation, reminiscent of shows like _Blue's Clues,_ for example. I know I thought it was a kids' show for that reason, until my mum told me it was inappropriate.

I think the real issue is they strawman everyone they don't agree with to make their own bad takes seem more rational showing complete lack of ability to be as critical about their own biases as the people they make fun of. It's really easy to frame something like climate change as silly when they ignore all the scientific evidence about it and just frame it as being ridiculous as a manbearpig, leading to having a fandom that also uncritically accepts this kind of stuff for years before finally backtracking long after the damage has already been done. You never see them teasing and making fun of their own libertarian beliefs in the way they make fun of everyone else, because that's the narrative they're actively pushing as being correct, facts be damned. I wish they were as passionate about fact checking how accurate their biases are as they are as passionate about pushing those biases as the only rational position.

As someone who doesn’t watch South Park, but does watch vids about it, I’ve got a pretty good idea as to why it’s so loved, and I’m pretty sure not everyone who likes it are “apathetic morons” or whatever! 👍

Honestly, I'm on the same boat. But at the same time, I don't like to gatekeep stuff, I believe anyone should be free to consume & interpret whatever media they want. Just some are looking to give something they haven't delved into, some bad publicity, because they're dense, and simply can't admit they don't understand the appeal behind it. It's fine to not like something, it's another to repeatedly & unapologetically show blatant ignorance towards what it's about.

What about those who do understand SP and still dislike it? You can't have it both ways.

It's also an establishment issue, the "solution" is often just higher taxes and prices that go directly to the companies and the government. The same goes for electricity, gas, oil, alcohol, even drugs people develop a necessity for. Idek the fat figurehead in it but the idea is that these people don't care about you just because they say they care about an issue that might harm peoples' livelihoods.

There's also elements of classism involved, like the scene when Rob Reiner is beligerent on the Redneck smoking in the bar. The Redneck is smoking in a bar, which was legal in Colorado at the time (I think?) So it's within the Redneck's right. Rob Reiner explodes,:"Oh my God! What kind of backwards hick-state is this?" The Redneck pleads: "Look man, I work 14 hours a day at the saw mill. I just got off work and I need to relax." Rob Reiner: "Well when I relax, I just got to my vacation house in Hawaii!" Redneck: "I AIN"T GOT A VACATION HOUSE IN HAWAII!" Rob Reiner: "Your vacation house is in Mexico then, whatever!" Matt Stone and Trey Parker were born and raised in Colorado, and they've grown up knowing all the state's stereotypes of being a flyover state or being associated with the negative stereotypes of the Rust Belt. Hell, the reason they hate Barbara Streissand with a passion was because she declared the whole state to be full of hicks and proposed a boycott in response to the Colorado Supreme Court floating around the idea of passing a homophobic law/policy in the early 90s (Matt and Trey support gay rights and fair treatment, they just hate that Streissand directed her anger at all of Colorado and not the state government). So yeah, another reoccuring theme in South Park is mocking people who come from higher social and/or economic backgrounds feeling liked they're more than qualified to lecture people who don't come from higher social and/or economic backgrounds on important issues without bothering to understand them, or present it in a grossly ignorant and condescending way. I think the one scene in the whole series that describes this attitude succinctly is when Mr. Garrison blows up at Rosie O'Donnell in the Trapper Keeper episode: "People like you preach tolerance and open-mindedness all the time, but when it comes to Middle America, you think we're all evil and stupid country yokels who need your political enlightenment! Well, just because you're on TV doesn't mean you know crap about the government! Now get your ass back on first class and respect this class's right to make up their own minds!" Only in this day and age, replace "TV" with "RU-vid channel" or "Twitter account."

THIS. Also, Twitter to me is quite literally the definition of 'taking things too seriously'. Twitter is a personal nightmare of people on extreme ends of each spectrum who need to go outside and touch grass (at least all the tweets that get the most attention). I'm so glad I stopped going on there years ago. Taking things too seriously is almost always people viewing issues on a binary, black and white angle when things in life are always much more grey and nuanced than that, and South Park does an excellent job of portraying this. Either this point goes over people's heads, or they just haven't watched the show and decide to form their opinion on it.

I mean... I'm on Twitter, and my mum actually monitored what I watched. I even intentionally avoided seeing the fourth _Harry Potter_ movie when it came out (at least until I was invited to see it for my cousin's birthday, and even then I had to be talked into it) because it's rated M (i.e. recommended for 15 and older), and I was only 9 at the time.

Or parents can decide their kid is mature enough to handle more mature content. Not every kid is a "kid"

Same here, I'm moderately left leaning and they've had great takes on a lot of different cultural and political talking points. Matt and Trey have both been confirmed as being liberal, but they make fun of everything, everyone, all across the board because they see the stupidity in everything. I appreciated them being open and honest about their changing views of a variety of different topics they've joked about. And they're 100% for free speech, they were even willing to die for it. Awesome guys and great writers. As an aspiring screenwriter myself, I've dreamed of working at South Park Studios!

The original ManBearPig episode, I believe, is more about criticizing Al Gore than about denying climate change. Not sure if we should see the more recent ManBearPig stuff as a true apology, but there's definitely a message in there from the creators assuring us that they believe in climate change. However, I don't see them apologizing to Al Gore personally, and to me at least, it looks like Matt and Trey didn't change their position on how they feel about Al Gore and his political style. When I originally watched the old episode, not so long after its release, I was in my early twenties, and politically more or less radically left. For some reason, I never took the episode as horribly offensive to my beliefs on climate change. 6 months late, but I'm pretty sure they used the ginger hate plot as a means to make fun of hate itself. The ginger hate in the real world was because of children being impressionable and latching on to something that they don't understand. This was an issue of bad parenting, not an issue of South Park writing.

...I mean no it definitely did instill a "We dont care/ take sides narrative" which is kinda untrue. It taught a generation of kids that believing in any issue is dumb. Impartiality and actually believing your apolitical is nonsense so when a actual issue comes around your desensitized to the idea of there being real ramifications Anti Smoking episode exist less as a critque and more an excuse to make fun of a celebrity which should be fine but it still promotes big tobacco as in the right. People take South Park Satire as infallible but they themselves have admitted to punching down and having some poor takes But the shows reverence paints it less like two guys just writing shit they find funny and more as a way you should approach life I'm sorry but two straight white guys deciding to reappropiate the word F@g and Ni$$a because they feel the older context is outdated and shouldn't carry the same context isn't a discussion They should have even as Satire But there praised because some people feel it was nuanced Personally them just doing whatever and have good or bad takes are fine but it's similar to Rick and Morty in how it changed the landscape For Rick and Morty it was the fake nihilism and the edgy nothing matters narrative along with popularizing gross out and shock humor in adult cartoons And for South Park it's became an avenue for apathetic humor where despite 30 years of prior research in Global Warming before the Man BeaR Pig episode They made it a recurring theme that years later finally had them acknowledge yes its a real issue. If people took it as it was just two guys talking about things that grind there gears(like most episodes feel like the writer got a new Japanese toilet and just wanted to talk about it) then yeah no issue but people take South Park seriously

100% a lot of the older south park episodes that were once absurdity are now looking prophetic.

It’s almost like South Park’s an inside joke only understood by the crew, but not everyone else considering a lot of people get it wrong, including me
