South Park: Quintuplets 2000 Reaction (Season 4, Episode 4) 

This episode is so much funnier to people who recognize (and remember) the Elian Gonzales controversy. Also the “not so fast girls” gets me every time

This was one of the earliest examples of South Park parodying a real life event shortly after it happened. I remember being blown away by the turn around time on the Elian Gonzalez jokes.

Speaking as someone who has been to Romania three times (spent most of the time in Bucharest, but also visited Brasov, Ploiesti and Constanta), they do have most of the same amenities that the rest of Europe does, as of the mid-2000s after they joined the EU. Romania had been reduced to an economically depressed state comparable to the latter days of the Soviet Union due to Ceausescu's government looting the country's resources for boondoggle construction projects that are basically all tourist attractions, the primary one being Parliament Palace, which rivals the Taj Mahal. It took more than a decade for the country to stabilize their economy before they were able to start fixing their crumbling infrastructure and getting back on track. Even in 2010 when I first visited Bucharest there was a lot of older buildings from the communist period that were being renovated. All of that being said, their subway system was the cleanest and safest one I've ever been to, they put the ones in New York and Philadelphia to shame. To be fair, the way that Romania is depicted in this episode is exaggerated, it wasn't nearly as bad in 2000 as what it was in the 80s.

This episode parodies events surrounding Elian Gonzalez, a Cuban child whose mother fled with him to the U.S. via raft and died shortly after leaving Elian alone. He would be reunited with some family members in the U.S. but it would cause an international incident when his father, a Cuban national came forth wishing for Elian to be returned home to Cuba. Both the U.S. and Cuban governments would become involved in a torrid battle over Elian's custody and right to sanctuary in the U.S. In the end Cuba would win out resulting in Federal agents storming the home of Elian's U.S. based family to claim him and return him home to his father. The scene where Kenny is shot is a direct reference to a famous image of U,S, agents taking Elian at gunpoint. Of course, Elian was not actually shot like poor Kenny.
