Written in 2007, it was the first song where I wrote directly to a theme before I had any music. I wrote a series of phrases and the one that struck me was, "I hear they treat heartache with tequila and loneliness by dancing with those pretty senoritas."
I knew that would be in the chorus. The song was written over two days in July of 2007, perhaps influenced by my impending separation from my first wife.

South To Mexico (smuggling my heart) Lyrics

Arrogant Sage Music
VERSE
Johnny & Patricia they’re good friends of mine
They call me up said, “Boy, it must be time”
“Going to take you out - see you on your feet again”
They don’t know I’ve got a different plan
That’s the problem with this little town
Everybody knows when you are up or down
Need a change of venue, a change of scenery
A language barrier might be just the thing
CHORUS
I’m smuggling my heart South to Mexico
A little border town where I can just lay low
I hear they treat heartache with tequila
And Loneliness by dancing with those pretty senoritas
A dark cantina with no one I know
Soft desert winds to warm my soul
I’m smuggling my heart South to Mexico
Verse 2:
Mariachi band will play that sad love song
Don’t understand a word but I will sing along
Between the locals and expatriates
I find a place to put my love to rest
(chorus)
VERSE
Que bonita, quieres baillar
We’re the last two sitting at this lonely bar
My broken Spanish makes you laugh I see
Does your pretty smile mean there’s a chance for me?
