The province says dismantling the tent encampment in Vancouver's Marpole neighbourhood was necessary for safety after a fire broke out at the park last weekend. Advocates say it's left some encampment residents with nowhere to go.

There was one tent there last summer, neat & tidy. It since turned into a huge garbage dump & helluva mess. What folk need to understand is many of these homeless don't want to live in low-income housing which could be provided for them, as they don't want to abide by the rules. They want to do & deal drugs, smoke crack/weed, make noise & mess, etc. There was a whole bunch hanging out every day in a local allotment, you heard it all! plus syringes & peeing in people's plant beds, while kids are running around. They can't BE helped.

While you’re correct it doesn’t mean it’s not a problem, most of these people migrate inland to places like Victoria and Vancouver during winter as it’s warmer, there’s also not an abundance of low income housing like you think, average cost of rent in Vancouver is $2200 a month, that means you could work a full time job 40 hour work week at minimum wage and you can’t even afford to have a roof over your head let alone all of your other expenses, lots of these people stop caring about there lives and turn to drugs, it’s extremely hard to pick yourself up from a bad spot in your life when the system punishes you for even being there. People go through there own traumas in life, most addicts suffer from severe trauma and growing up in miserable low income house holds, it doesn’t mean there druggies that we shouldn’t give a helping hand, we should be going up to these individuals and actively trying to help them with not only financial struggles but also there mental struggles, only if they want it and can prove it.

You realize that unfortunately City municipality is responsible for city homeless. Provincial level comes afterwards to help the cities in their province. The National government really has little power in Canada to deal with homeless. Not really but it is reality.

@@archforge Cities are responsible for homeless in the sense that If a city is soft on crime, if it allows for open drug use, if it allows for tents, then yeah people will flock here. AirBNB is also a problem as well, you have the investor class buying up homes. The Federal government has a lot to do with homelessness. 1. They print money causing inflation 2. Tent communities with their significant issues are not fair to the community. So parks need to be kept public. As for what the solution is, it’s complicated, because there are different kinds of homeless people. Some are stealing. Many are doing drugs. Some are really mentally ill. Some will do anything to get work and get back into a home. But just enabling their current way of life (allowing camping in parks, handouts etc) is not a solution.

antmas.... My wife and myself pulled a couple off the street in -18 they were together happy covering in a large blanket like a tent... we drove home and decided lets take them some extra stuff... food and coffee > turns out they had been in a shelter waiting for housing and missed their bus... so too late to go back to the shelter... they weren't perfect but they were happily together, human and grateful... so you know... it was a pretty tough situation.... timing is a funny thing... I am not that flush... but we've been in tight spots... stayed for 3 weeks access to stove, shower and phone was the biggest challenge they face in over crowded shelter before you know they had appointments and some resources together a few of us to vouch for them give them an address to get a well being / rent cheque... and they were on their way... they applied at all the right places and were accepted. They had been fighting for that for a long time sometimes we just need a bit of a hand. Was Happy to help... they did not sit around they made the most of it and got busy.

The reality is the government has said, look we have housing for you, but you need to get rid of some your stuff/ junk. Fair! Why would you want the accommodations the tax payers have paid for ruined with bed bugs, mice, rancid garbage not to mention whatever personal problems eg: addictions which could lead to oh I don't know...FIRES destroy a otherwise safe place to live?!!

One of these times, a tent with a person's gear needed to survive Winter will go in garbage & person will freeze to death. Talk about safety.

While I can see the wish and duty of the city to restore order and zoning bylaws, actions like this one do nothing to actually solve the problem. It just moves it elsewhere and, after a while, it's all gonna be repeating. Very intelligent approach.

You make it sound everyone is like that. That is a lot of generalization you are making. And who do you know will hire a homeless person for a job. You make it sound finding a job is so easy. A lot of people are only a paycheck away from being homeless. Where is your compassion.
