It is nice seeing Southampton again. A lot different from 1995, when I went for a Medical assessment (just around the corner from the station) for a job in what is then called, a British Rail.

So I'm a Southampton resident and my girlfriend is African American and mostly long distance. She found the city to be much less diverse than what she was used to in East Coast US, however if you walk around the Central city you will see diversity every single day, and most people nowadays who live here have friends and coworkers from different backgrounds. There seems to be a very large Hindu, Muslim and Sikh community especially with ancestors from the South Asian region. Also the UK's first POC Prime Minister was from Southampton.

As a resident it is very diverse but there is still very prevalent racism, attacks on specifically East Asians have stuck out in local news recently

@@saintswillmkii4367 oh god that poor University lecturer who was attacked that incident was awful. Some people were terminally online and brainwashed during the pandemic sadly. I think a lot of the more racist residents mostly live on the outskirts, it's likely mostly elderly people because most young people here grew up surrounded by diversity with diverse friends.

It’s actually called Soccer. That’s the name given to it by its English inventors. It comes from the word “association” as in association football. Over time the name has degenerated into soccer. But when I was young soccer was still in use in England.

@@oldman8584 Not true. Football is Association Football, known across the world and UK as Football (except in US). The word "Soccer" was invented by a schoolboy at Charterhouse school to distinguish it from "Rugger", his nickname for Rugby football (known across the world, of course, as Rugby).

@@roberthayter157. Well whatever you say the word “soccer” was used as often as “football” when I was young (in England). And as I understand it, Rugby came from soccer when (supposedly) a young boy picked up the ball and ran with it. But whatever the history of the game, I can tell that the first sentence above, is absolutely true.
