Southeast Asia’s biggest railway station opens in Bangkok with fanfare, nostalgia

Thailand officially opened its new Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in Bangkok on January 19, 2023. Also known as Bang Sue Grand Station, the facility is described as Southeast Asia’s biggest railway station. Thai authorities hope the US$1-billion project will allow the country to become an international hub for the region. The capital’s previous main terminal, Hua Lamphong station, will also remain in operation after public pressure persuaded authorities not to close the century-old station.

We have an iconic train station in Kuala Lumpur and bringing it to live will be commendable. It is sad the government is not going much to safe the iconic stations in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Johor Bahru etc. The KL station is rotting away. My early experiences at the KL station was the restaurant, big hotel rooms and the very knowledgeable staff at the station 🙏❤️

I remember taking a train to ipoh and JB Sentral by KTM and we passed by KL Station, you can feel the awesome feeling in your body because you're passing through the station that is operating since 100+ years ago.

Interesting that one day a traveller would be able to travel from China to Singapore by high speed rail Honestly it sounds like a pretty awesome trip to make, with plenty of opportunities to explore various interesting stops in Laos, Thailand, and Malaysia Sounds like an adventure that I can't wait to go on Too bad Vietnam isn't part of the journey It'd be great if Vietnam could be included, but China probably chose Laos instead due to Vietnam's anti-China stance Pity, such a wasted opportunity But looking on the bright side, it gives people the chance to explore Laos, so it's actually better in a way

Vietnam is the only country in Southeast Asia that has really any real chance of becoming a developed country. So, they are smart to be anti-China. It´s not just Vietnam, high IQ countries like Korea, Japan and Taiwan are very anti-China as well and are very cautious with China´s "investment".

The Bangsue train station is complement to Suvarnabhumi airport of Bangkok. Both is huge and mega structure for its own class.

They can use the old station as a food court like the one in Singapore, the government wanting to tear down such a historic and beautiful building is just sad, as if they were not thinking at all or maybe it is because of corruption, they can get more kickbacks if the sold the property and/or built a new infrastructure on the old site.

My dream is to connect this 5 country railway line network to Myanmar, North East India, Chittagong and Dhaka in Bangladesh, Kolkata, Jharkhand, Bihar, UP, Delhi NCR, Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab in India. And an alternate line between Kolkata and Kanyakumari/Thiruvananthapuram, via Chennai/Bengaluru.

I would suggest that Hua Lamphong should be just used as a commuter line station (just like Jakarta Kota Station in Indonesia), especially the diesel trains that go through the area that wouldn't even be covered with electric railways, such as to Maeklong. At least it has a use on something than nothing at all

@@Fallen608 Have you ever used the train service in Thailand? . that is just your perspective only, the thing is the about the management issue and there is no direction at all to enhance the railway system . So there is nothing changes here in thailand for over 30 years for the normal train. However, the subway and skytrain are managed by private company. Thus, there is a big gap between 2 system.

Manggarai otw intergrasi LRT Jakarta dri Velomdrome dan Halim cuman ya kurang gede tp lumayan terpusat dan bikin keselnya nunggu Kereta arah Sudirman karena nunggu bisa 15menit dri arah bekasi kalo penuh kelewat nunggu lg jd 30menitan di hari minggu kalo hari kerja mungkin lbh cepat mana panas🤣

Thailand attract 40 million international tourist a year before covid 19, they suppose to be the first country in south east Asia to build the very fast train and building a kra canal. The problem with the Thai Railway, It's the single track railway that made the train slow, not on-time and unreliable. With the double tracking efforts underway things should be much more enjoyable in the next 10 years (the Authority said 5 years on most of the double tracking projects, but i don't trust them in the slightest, so i always double the timeframes), we already bought newer DMU from China, so the speed problem would be better the very moment that the train tracks are finally doubled. All that's left now is the old carriages that needed to be replace, they're like a walking fossil, they're uncomfortable for the passengers, especially the sleeper carriages, those are impossible to sleep in.

@@TheBodiesInTheWaterBeckons Yes, I would love to take the trains more in Thailand, but they're so slow. They should be faster than travelling by private vehicle for them to be worthwhile, otherwise riding a PV just gives you so much more freedom and remains quicker and more efficient than taking the sleeper train. As a foreigner, I think they're alright for an experience, but I much prefer riding coach buses across provinces or taking a flight over riding the trains as of this moment, fingers crossed things improve in the designated time frame and delays are minimised.

why malaysia wants to join in the project? let’s be realistic. even japan doesn’t hv direct train from tokyo to nagasaki in the west. tht distance is nearer than KL - bangkok most china’s line are not profitable. but china is an economic powerhouse. they can afford tht. Malaysia with current debt situation, cannot afford another unprofitable project

In Thailand, traveling by train is not popular at all. Take too much time. No high speed train. Most travelers are poor people.

Thai people here. The station began construction long before in 2013 with government funding and Thai construction companies. The station doesn't take too much time to build, but it faces multiple internal conflicts and scheduling revisions, so it can't open until now. In fact, almost all Thai construction projects are mostly Thai-owned. Japan and China funded the construction of High Speed Rail Lines, but all of it is to be constructed by Thai companies.

Thailand railway system is very under-developed with most lines being narrow gauge single track, unsuitable for high speed trains

Well now Thailand is building double tracks for meter gauge and also building standard gauge for hi speed trains for 2 lines: bangkok - nakornrachasima line and 3 airports links

Hua Lamphong was built in the early 1900s using Thailand's own money and resources. Whereas, Bang Sue Grand Station was built with loans from JICA.
