The price of film and getting stuff developed meant that my dad only shot glimpses of things, how he would have enjoyed 'digital', and being able to film stuff the way we do today. Glad you enjoyed this short film.
I am slowly working my way through my Dad's films, if there is, I will post it. The bit I am desparately looking for is footage of Hornchurch Airfield! Those Carvairs were great, huge amounts of blue smoke on starting. As you say, 'DC4'. Thanks for watching.
Harry, there is some footage of hornchurch but I don't know the link ? I think it's British pathe ? The carvair was the closest we got to building a 747, would you agree !
Very old clip, sorry about the quality, it was a super 8 cine film, shot by my dad. Those Carvairs were impressive starting up, blue smoke every where. I never flew in one. I did fly in a Crab Air 748, they called it an Andover, even though it was the straight fuselage with no loading ramp. We went out from Northolt, touch & go at Benson and back to Northolt through a rather iffy frontal system. Rather more years ago than I care to remember.
Great old footage of the airport - hope you have some more of it? The first aircraft is a HS748 of Channel Airways. By the way, the car ferry (Carvair) is made from a DC-4 conversion, not DC-6
Maybe so, but all of the previous people who commented had already told me. As far as I am concerned, 748s are Andovers, having been a passenger in one operated by Crab Air many years ago.
