AssumedArrow 17 yes, but where were your folks from? People who come here drom the Northern states and raise kids here may bot have as strong an accent because you have the influence of the way your mama and daddy talk. I was born and raised in N.C. about an hour from the foothills. My mama and daddy were from the foothills. So all my life the only influence I've had around was a deep Southern accent.
I was born and raised in North Carolina and will never go anywhere else. But I believe you are right. I am 30 now, when I was 14 I went on a trip to California with some good neighbors that were from there. We were in California at some sort of amusement park. Some lady out of no where walks up to me and my brother cause she had heard us talking and she said "I bet I can guess where you are from just based off that southern accent. That accent comes from no place else but North Carolina". Made me feel proud.
@Ben Mackay Games People are often proud of their heritage, and accents are an element of that. The same applies to any culture, though of course it may be expressed in differing ways. Clearly, the woman thought it was something of significance, or else she would not have pointed it out to him. It’s not an earth shattering event, but it is something to enjoy nonetheless.
DO NOT LOSE YOUR ACCENTS! My grandparents were from Arkansas and I loved their accent. I was raised in California so I don't have it, but even now when I go to Arkansas I've noticed a lot of the younger generation are losing it and are starting to sound like their from Ohio or something. Regional accents seem to be dying out all over and that's a shame.
I grew up in CA but moved to WNC when I was 8 and lived there for 13 years. Just moved back to CA from WNC. Miss the accent so much more than I ever imagined.
+Ralph James ayup... totally Obama's fault that y'all have no pride in yourselves or motivation to preserve your local culture. y'all should get together and vote the first con artist that gives you someone else to blame for all the problems you've caused yourself into a position of ultimate poser!
I'm from Denmark and I just spent the last year of my life living in North Carolina with some of the nicest people i've ever met. Listening to y'alls accent makes me miss the awesome times I had and miss the southeners I know.
It really is, especially the mountains and western Piedmont, the coast is a slightly slower drawl , with the exception of the Okracoke/ Hyde county brogue.
Agree, my nephews grew up in a rural Sampson County NC town where you don’t typically find transplants and they sound close to how these guys sound, not exact, but very close.
Glad I found this comment. Been looking exactly for a Carolina woman's accent after a friend told me they sound the warmest and friendliest. I thought I had to make do with this video
Jessielou121 Good for you! I saw a sad video saying that young Southerners don't have accents anymore, so I've been watching these type videos for a couple of days and those folks are dead wrong! Southern young folks DO still speak like their Mamas and Daddys . Maybe not in places like Atlanta or Raleigh but elsewhere for certain. I'm from Mississippi, BYW.
TheTruth North Carolina did get huge numbers of Scottish settlers in the 1700s, particularly from the Highlands. Some of my ancestors were Highland Scots, and yes, I'm from North Carolina. www.scotsman.com/heritage/people-places/the-highlander-immigrants-who-helped-build-america-1-4213493?lltt
@@NC_SUGAR they were actually Ulster Scots from Northern Ireland some of the words they said we say the same here in Northern Ireland (which is part of the UK)
Meade Vlog channel I used to live in virginia IT IS NOT SOUTHERN. theres not 1 person i have met with a southern accent . Theres a major difference between virginia and north carolina. Right now im in north carolina and all of it is country. Virginia is way more northern like.
Meade Vlog channel Oh, ok...Mmm I was born in brooklyn new york then i moved to washington dc then new jersey then now im here in north carolina. I guess im not A real virginian.
Jayla Lawley northern va is not southern at all , but head 1 hour south or west away from dc and you will hear the southern accent, btw Richmond is 2 hours from Dc and only 1 hour away from NC
This video is phenomenal. THANK YOU guys for putting out something that actors can use to get it right! I am currently working on a play set in North Carolina and you two are my main dialect coaches. I LOVE the sound of your voices!
THis is really good boys. Thanks for taking the time to make it for RU-vid. I live in LA now but grew up in Mecklenburg County. It's nice to hear home again. But I spent a lot of time up near Black Mountain. Thank you
Guys thanks for this. As an urban midwesterner now living in Seattle, I look at this as a cultural exchange and educational piece not only for the world but for fellow Americans. It's become very interesting for me and I hope to explore the southeast of the country in the future.
I'm from Maggie Valley, Western North Carolina, An I'm currently serving in Afghanistan. I have buddies here in the army from all around the world an they just don't understand how the southern people are, an the southern hospitality an how we are proud of where we come from. I'm always talkin about "Well, Where I come from" an they're always talking asking why I always talk about back home. An why I say Y'all, An lightning bugs instead of fireflies, things of that nature. This was a good video an it damn sure puts the western Carolina some justice on the true accents that come outta there. Miss home can't wait until I can be around good ole southern people who understand.
Man, when I was in the service, all of my best friends were Southerners. I don't know why. I didn't mean for it to be that way, but I guess we were just drawn to one another. We had a great understanding of one another, and I miss those guys a lot. Good luck over there, brother.
Thank you for your service! There ain't no place in the world like N.C. I was born and raised in NC., but I've lived and traveled all over the place, but after the new wore off my heart always called me back home. Folks in N.C. are the best and nicest people in the world, but if you make them mad that's a different story. RLTW!
I'm from Australia, and your accent is absolutely amazing. I adore it. Honestly it's one of the best in the world, I love it! Thank you for making this video :)
You guys just gave a lesson on what language is supposed to be and mean. Some often put others down because the way they talk or misrepresent their dialects, deeming them uneducated and the like. But in reality we got to talk they way we do regardless--and be as authentic as we ought to be--language is being and therefore defines who we are as people. Thank you for this education on the dialect spoken in your area.
Be proud of who you are and where you come from - nobody's better or worse than you - just different. I'm English and am fascinated with American accents that still retain elements of old English accents
You are very real and honest in sharing your cultural accent! There are people in our country who do not understand local dialect and think negatively about good people like y'all! God Bless!
Be proud of your southern accents! I am from the Northwestern part of Ga. And people who judge and say people from the south are stupid need to stop being so judgmental. Anyone can be stupid no matter where they are from, so thank ya'll for showing a true southern accent.
Over a century ago my mother's family moved west, but they brought their accent and vocabulary with them. Time is erasing that accent from the family, but I miss it all the time. That's why I decided to listen to you guys. It was very comforting to hear that slow speech and words I seldom hear in my old age. Don't want to move east, but I do like to hear the language of my childhood. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
I'm from Charlotte ("Chalotte"), but my family moved to California when I was young. I'm back in North Carolina now and I'll never leave again. It warms my heart to hear y'all talk. It reminds me so much of my grandparents who have been gone a long time. I always worry that the southern drawl will disappear some day. It's what makes the south unique. Thank you for the videos.
At the start of this video I jokingly said to my husband that you guys were from Mount Airy. I about died laughing when one of you said you were. This is seriously the perfect example of the accents found in the NorthWestern part of NC. Definitely a good reference for theatre people!
Yes I'm still watching this video! I can't get enough of this. Grew up in PA but have always been drawn to the South for a lot of reasons. I love stock car racing, that's one big reason. Also love the Simple Man video. Y'all are cool!!
I appreciated the video. I work for a HUGE company and moved from the Carolinas to Arkansas. The Vice President told me that I needed to work on my accent immediately. I wasn't pissed...was shocked someone actually said it.
I love the Southern accent! I'm Brazilian and I'm a big fan of Southerners. I'm training to speak it just as a native Southerner someday. Love you guys and your awesome accent!
When I was a little girl I spent a lot of time with a family from North Carolina. They were really good to me. The warmest people you'll ever meet. Now when I hear this accent, I get a warm feeling inside that takes me back.
You guys are awesome. I'm an Asian so I don't know what it's like to be picked on for having a southern accent. But I agree with you guys, you guys are people just like anyone else. People shouldn't stereotype people with southern accent(or they shouldn't stereotype anyone). I respect you guys. Videos like these keeps people informed. We need more of you guys! :)
Y'all are making me homesick for visiting my aunt, uncle and cousins in Burlington, even though I have one a them California accents. Funniest story is when I was walking past a pet store in NC and a parrot said "HELL-leaux". I busted up and people looked at me like I was crazy. Don't EVER lose that accent!
I tell you. The souther accent is the sexiest English accent. Studies showed that, and the northern and western Americans still can't accept it. I went to Europe and picked up so many French ladies just by saying hey
Hey guys. I'm from Raleigh but living overseas now. Many of my students (doctors, mostly) will be studying at Bowman Grey and UNC and Duke med schools and your video is great - thanks for speaking naturally and not hamming it up and letting them hear how many folks really talk in North Carolina.
Love it!! It's crazy how much you can really hear the Irish influence, especially when they say "power, shower," etc. And based on all of the convos I've had with people around the world, the southern accent is pretty much voted as the "sexiest" of American accents. :D
Brandon Morales the reason you hear Irish influencer is western NC had a lot of Irish and Scottish immigrants. Most of us are mostly of Irish and/or Scottish descent. This is true WNC accent. I’m from Buncombe county like the guy in the hat.
You guys have no idea how much I love souther american Accent, specially from NC. It sounds just amazing regarless of what most people would say. I lived for several years in Wilmington NC, but unfortunatelly i moved out. Thanks for sharing the video.
Charlotte Indigo nah, most accents are alluring because we're attracted to different yet similar traits. So a person with an English accent is way more attractive than someone with a Chinese accent - to Americans. It's different but not TOO different.
I agree. I'm from NC but my mama's from Dallas. My Texas relatives sound different from me but still southern in most ways. I have a mixed up accent due to daddy being from NC. I'm one of the few NC natives who says pecans like puh-KAHNS, but that's the way mama says it. Most NC natives say PEE-cans.
@@agoogleuser4443 Yeah a great example of a Texas accent is Blake Shelton... I know he's from Oklahoma but Okies and Texans sound about the same. His is pretty thick but still is a good benchmark
Cute accent! The first time I heard it I was so shocked (in a good way) and had a hard time, sometimes, understanding what was being said, but it takes quite an ear to get it. Well I pretty sure they would say the same about us, Britons!
North Carolina is very much so considered the south. Born NC, Raised NC/SC, Lived NC/SC/TN If you can't relate to the southern life, language, food , nature, accent, heritage, or traditions then don't speak. Accent or relative terms does NOT make a person uneducated. The accent derives from the British settlers from years ago. Doing some research on each state's southern accent and where it came from would be a smart thing to do if you do not understand. The south is known for some of the best schools, scientists, businesses, retirement plans, and OLD (RICH) MONEY. Everyone is not a bum or dirty, or racist. If you've never been......COME ON OUT FRIEND ; we always have something fun to do.
I'm Australian, I made a friend in west North Carolina and planning to visit mid next year. Hoping it's nice, if the rest of the people are as nice as he is should be a great time.
This is the accent I was looking for! I had to search a bit to figure where exactly it's spoken, nice one, thanks lads. Greetings from Ireland, you have my favourite accent in the world
So glad I ran across this video lol thank y’all for making me laugh so hard I started going into labor 😂 get picked on all the time about my accent but most people enjoy it...
Thanks guys. I have listened to your accents on more than one occasion. I needed to get that accent down for a job and I appreciate you putting this out there. I used to live in Columbia SC year ago but you forget the accent if you don't use it.
I LOVE your accents !!! LOVE THEM. I'm from New York, I visited North and South Carolinas for the first time in 2011 and fell in love with the South. I wish I could speak like you. I really want to move to South Carolina (or somewhere in the South), and live on a plantation there
well little lady, yall can come on down any time you please, just gimme a holler when youre in town so i can say hi and see those pretty eyes in the flesh
The piedmont in NC pretty much has the same accent. And believe it or not, there are areas in the outer banks of NC that have a pirate/english-esque accent, its very rare but exists around Ocracoke and Hatteras areas.
Oh yea one of my best buds is from the Hatteras area sounds just like what black beard would! By the way I'm soon Durham and is really the same but alittle more mixed with some of blacks say cause of the population around these parts.
The accent is Cornish, or from Devon or Somerset, they hav a strong a celtic west-country accent down there and brought it with them when they immigrated to those islands
