I’m definitely gonna do this because the oven takes forever. When you thickened the sauce at the end you didn’t add a thickener right? Just let it cook.
Y’all my grannie is rolling over. I added this right here to her menu box. I didn’t have an orange, so I crossed my fingers and used orange juice. When I tell you my yams were scraped clean yesterday, this will be the recipe I use from now on. I will be getting some oranges in the next few days to make more for Thanksgiving. I love that I could make them on the stove and the whole house was not hot. Thank you Chef.
Hah, such a difference. I'll definitely use this recipe, but up here in Wisconsin and such, we try to use the oven as much as possible to WARM UP the house! Enjoy your Southern weather folks! =]
Just a suggestion. It would be great to see from you a whole entire Thanksgiving and/or Christmas dinner which would probably be an hour or so long. I love the glowing colors and quality of your videos.
@@jacquelinezenga7119 Basic Cooking is always good, everyone should learn basic cooking, he does a good job there. The Ethnic stuff...is a big turn off for me.
I made candied yams exactly like this years ago at a fund raiser. The only difference was I used fresh lemons. Someone asked me if it was a secret family recipe, or could I share it! I always share my recipes. It’s the Best feeling when somebody loves what you bake or cook. Your yams 👀 so delicious!
So I just wanted to let you know that I officially made my entire menu based off of all of your recipes. I am so excited for this blessing that you have given to the world. You are truly a phenomenal man and I am so grateful because I can’t cook a lick, but watching your videos has really helped me become a cooker.
My mom used to make the best candied yams for Thanksgiving & Christmas. It was one of our favorite dishes. There was rarely any left when the meal was done. However, I've looked online at several recipes for this dish & everyone of them had granulated white sugar. Mom never used white sugar, just the brown sugar. She didn't add any salt & she boiled the potatoes, when they were soft, she'd remove them from the stove, pull the skin off, slice them, place them in a dish & pour the brown sugar mix over them & bake them. Definitely no oranges or marshmellows.. also, boiling them makes it easier to peel off the skin & slice them. She won't be with us this Thanksgiving, she passed in August. But we'll still have the candied yams as someone will make them. And we'll talk about mom & her yams. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Enjoy your family. They won't be here forever.
I used this recipe last year (my first time making them) and my family had nothing but good things to say. I’m making then again this Thanksgiving 🧡 thank you chef AB!
I'm doing candied "yams" for the first time this year. I was planning on doing it in the oven, but you converted me!! 25 minutes on the stove top won me over
Your stove top candy yams are the BEST I've ever tasted. Cooking the sauce in a pan with the butter and sugars really made the difference. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!!!
My Mom always made the best candied yams on the stovetop each year for Thanksgiving. She passed away 3 years ago and my sister, that isn’t known as the cook/baker in our family, somehow has all her recipes. I’ve been longing for candied yams…these seem similar to hers. I haven’t been into holiday dinners since her and dad’s passing 10 months apart, but I may make these, now that I have your recipe. Thank you and God Bless!
@isolde ward I’ve asked her for the recipes and she said she wanted them. I asked for copies and never got them. I re-asked for specific ones, like this one, and never got it. Breaks my heart. She has my Grandma’s recipes too cuz Mom had them. Everyone called me “Young Thelma”…my Grandma’s name…cuz I always cook and bake from scratch like her. I have none of them. Just memories.
I'm in the same boat. Mom always made my favorite sweet potatoes, but she passed away 3 years ago, too. I'm taking over family Thanksgiving hosting duties this year and I'm trying to recreate some of her recipes.
@@LittleDzz That's just ridiculous of your sister ... get you some recipe cards & tell her you're coming over, put on the coffee ☕️ ☕️ then you sit down & copy them right there in front of her so she knows she'll still have them. That was your mother & grandma too ... they'd want you to have them 🥰 Pray all goes well 🙏🏻
Ok, it's official. This is on the menu for tonight Update (3 hours from initial post): This recipe is delicious! I used about 1/4 cup of orange juice (didn't have an orange) and only used half a cup of sugar and brown sugar, and it was still sweet and delicious. I let my daughter taste test and she loved it. Keeping this recipe in deck!
I made this for thanksgiving - O M G- pure love - best I’ve ever made!!! Old method is out the window. My mom is a tough one- i got a ‘they are good’ which means she really liked them. Anytime she had leftovers- it was always on her plate! Now the next test will be my brother at some point.
You cracked me up when you said you got INDIGNANT eating that sample!! 🤣😁😋 On a serious note, you really are helping me teach my daughter how to make some of this soul food I never got taught to make as a young person. Thank you! 💜
Yw Christy M, RN. That's warming to hear that I'm helping you and your daughter. I'm thinking of doing a series for the young up and coming chefs next year.
@@SmokinandGrillinwithAB That would be awesome! 👍🏽👍🏽 Today was my first time making candied yams. I usually make sweet potato casserole, but I used your recipe and it's looking good! 😁 HAPPY THANKSGIVING! 🦃
Maybe it's soul food, but us white folks sure do love some candied sweet potatoes on the holidays! I learned something today, I never had put seasonings in them, no wonder mine were bland.
This is my first holiday season where I'm the main cook instead of shopping helper, prep, and cleanup crew and I'm not out here *quite* dying because of your generosity with culinary knowledge. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🙏🙇💧
I followed your recipe and made these candied yams today for Thanksgiving. It was my first time ever making candied yams. Everyone loved them and kept talking about how good they were - thank you! 🙏🏽
I just put all the ingredients in the pot and added the sweet potatoes. I snuck a tiny taste and about melted to the floor. The orange juice and vanilla extract took it to the next level. Thank you for this wonderful recipe and easy instructions.
I love this recipe; I started making my yams stove top many years ago because I wanted quick and easy, as well as using orange juice, lemons, apples and pineapples.
My mother used similar recipe but she would boil the yams first, then peel, then slice the yams length wise. We looked forward to her sweet potatoes especially during the holidays.
That's the way my grandma use to make them. She said bcuz it was easier to peel that way! I not longer use that method. I peel mines first then bake instead of boil. I feel when you boil them that's boiling out the Nutrients that's needed! I d I everything else they same as she did other than boiling them first!
I'm making this for my mom on Thanksgiving AB. She takes her candied yams very serious and its the highlight for the holiday dinner. I'm placing my life in the hands of this recipe. I don't want a beat down from my mom this year. lol Looks great AB and I'm sure she'll love it.
I made your recipe for the candy yams this Thanksgiving and it was a huge success. Every year during the holidays my husband tells me about his mothers candied yams. I tried to find recipes that sounded like his description but they didn’t make the cut. Omg your recipe is a keeper. I’ve been asked to make it for Christmas too. Thank you
Man oh man Yo my brother just tried that recipe. Psh oh my gosh I dont even know what to say. Literally said a prayer before and thanked jesus after. Yo my man you got me speechless thank you for sharing the secrets. You a blessing to this world! Keep spreading that love. This what you call soul food.
Between this video and Dani Rose’s video I made the perfect yams! His tip on making the glaze first and cooking it down will help prevent scorching. This is a game changer. My family loved it!
Honestly my mom made yams on the stove top the same way! Mom never used to make them in the oven. It was always on top and the same recipe. This was a treat to see you doing it my momma way! Brought back memories for sure for me!! Thank you!!! God bless!!
Would Love to have the opportunity to cook with you AB!! 🙂Here is a a little tip that I have found, not many people know.. When cooking pasta, use a metal spoon to swish the pasta in the water, but leave the spoon in the pot, your pasta will not stick 🙂most people don't believe it lol
I made these Yams for Thanksgiving and they were such a big hit with my family - totally amazing! One thing I did do differently was to add pineapple juice because I didn't have any oranges and I also added pineapple tidbits and pecans. It truly was a hit! Thank you AB - will be makeing these again and again! Love your videos by the way.
I enjoyed this video very much. The memory of mother making sweet potatoes for dinners and holidays was always worth the wait. Sweet potatoes we always had gardening and the yams we're from the can as I thought, because I never had yams til I got out on my own. So I thank you for sharing the difference between the two. I'm also a fan of purple yams.. I'll say you're Never to old to learn anything about cooking, cause I never seen sweet potatoes cooked without adding water. Always was cooked in water, stick of butter cinnamon, dash salt, sugar, brown sugar. Beautiful presentation.
Yeah so true I’m 71 years old knew how to cook a little but watching you tube especially A B and his nephew i have learned how to cook even brought the cookbook it’s amazing
Great recipe! I've made yams before but I was taught to put everything in the pot! I love the fact that you prepare the sauce first with more ingredients! Love the vanilla and orange! I'm all in this Thanksgiving!
I made candied yams for the first time yesterday. I followed this recipe exactly. They were a hit! My fiancé loved them and told me to stash this recipe so I can make it again and again. Thank u!!
Dear AB, I'm a pretty good cook... My grandma taught me Greek/Lebanese cooking... For good ol American Cuisine you are THE BOMB!!! Quick and simple down home... I really like you
Thanks to you AB my Thanksgiving this year about to be bussin bussin! You’ve given me the confidence and techniques I need to show out for the family! ❤
I tried this for Thanksgiving and it was AMAZING!!! I was a little skeptical about the fresh orange juice but I'm a believer now!!! Thank you for sharing!😊
This is the best side dish ever! I made it for Thanksgiving, and my family loved it! We ate for dessert the next day too. I’m making it again tonight for tomorrow! Thank you for sharing your love and talent for cooking with the world.
I CAN'T with you, AB!! I'm watching this at work and when you said "I don't know whether to pat myself on the back, or run outside and testify", I literally busted out laughing!! I love your videos and your humor! Keep 'em coming. Oh, and by the way, I'm using this recipe for this Thanksgiving since I was asked to make the sweet potatoes! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!🦃
I have boiled my yams and I have baked my yams. But cooking the yams right in the candy liquid is GENIUS! My moms used pineapple juice in her recipe so that is what my family expects, but I'll fool everyone this year. Now, not to be controversial but where do you stand on the dreaded marshmallow issue? We are a house divided and sometimes I have to make a second tray! Thank you for all this and Happy Holidays from SoCal
I do not eat yams but for Thanksgiving I followed this recipe for my family they added this dish for me to make every holiday lol I used orange juice instead of an orange ❤️ my cousin AB did his big one with this recipe
OH MY GOD that looks incredible 😋 I've been making the yams every year at Thanksgiving for at least 25 years. I can honestly say it's time to change up the recipe. Thanks AB!
Damn!!! I’m going to make these for Thanksgiving along with your green beans! My family will be in Heaven!!! Thank you AB! I’ve made several of your recipes and shared them too!!! 🥰❤️😋🤤
I had the pleasure to eat a white sweet potato (yam) and didn’t realized what it was! My family and I went to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and found a wonderful restaurant called Glady’s Cafe. It was so good I asked the waitress what it was and she said it was a white sweet potato!!! Mind blowing 🤯 We are so deprived from our original culture it’s a shame. If you ever explore the island check them out❤
It’s my anniversary today and i am making Oxtails , rice & peas , baked macaroni , collard greens , corn bread and these candied yams 🥰 can’t wait to taste them !! Look amazing.
I make this exact recipe only I add molasses. They are absolutely amazing! I’ve also done Miami’s Hasselbeck style with a little bit of Worcestershire sauce, molasses, and time. I still do them stove top, but covered, and they are quite amazing! I love your videos, and I love that you make everything so real and convenient! Keep cooking and doing what you do and thank you and have a blessed holiday!
Your presentation in your cooking is superb it's a gift from God you flow with it the cleanliness is appealing to the viewers I enjoy watching and learning
Tried my hand at candied sweet potatoes a couple weeks ago for the first time. Time to level up with this one AB!!! Literally my favorite side at Thanksgiving
Hey Family, just wanted to say this looks amazing, I would like you to make some, sweet potato Betty, it’s something my late great Mother use to make. You take and boil the peeled yams/sweet potatoes then smash them or mash real good, till there creamy add butter cinnamon vanilla flavor nutmeg, brown sugar, and my secret ingredient is pink Himalayan salt. And a little heavy whipping cream, just to smooth it out, put it in a baking dish bake for 10-15 minutes just to set, add marshmallows to the top, and add some candy pecan inside the dish and on top it is soooooo, delicious. I met you and your wife on a cruise back in August, we took a nice picture, ❤️🙏 and respect always. Stay Blessed!
The quality of your videos have come a long way from a couple years ago. Nothing goes unnoticed. I’ve been following you for a couple years now. I am so happy when you come out with new videos and recipes. You always come thru for us! Thanks AB! Wishing you a great thanksgiving!
Just watching you for 6 minutes and I can see that you're an excellent cook, you make adjustments as needed (more yams), you know to add complimentary flavors to the brown sugar sauce like citrus and vanilla, you can measure things by sight, you use good ingredients (like that butter). I'm making whole yams for Easter dinner and wanted some ideas for brown sugar sauce that will be served with them. Looks great, thanks for taking the time and effort to share your recipe, the video looks very professional too.
This was so well done! Your charisma is off the charts, I just love how conversational and cozy you made this. Thank you so much!! I can’t wait to make for my family.
I always did mine in the oven after boiling the sweet potatoes with the skin on first, thank you for saving me some steps and some time! Much appreciated can’t wait to try this way! Thank you!!❤️❤️❤️
Literally so grateful for your channel! Your recipes never miss. My family is obsessed with these yams now. I made them for thanksgiving, then i was asked to make them for Christmas and new years😂
I just made these tonight. The only thing I did differently was that I added 3/4 cup of white sugar instead of 1 cup. I also toasted up a handful of pecan pieces in case we wanted to sprinkle on top of our plates. These candied yams were SO good. My husband said "this is like dessert" and went back for seconds 😂. He wants it added to the thanksgiving menu. Loved it!
O M Geee Honey let me tell you something Thanksgiving is over but I’m in the kitchen at 7:56 PM November 26, 2022 trying this recipe and it was so freaking delicious! Sidenote I have never made yams in the oven before I was only taught how to cook them on the stove I honestly didn’t know people made yams in the oven 😅 this recipe is fire thanks for sharing
Yess, AB. I make mine just like this, the stove part is genius. I also add cut up apples and pears. I get a phone call from my friend every year on how to do this. Told them to write it down...lol. I love your style
I tried these last year and I absolutely love this way of cooking sweet potatoes. Had to come back to review again so I can do them again!!!! Awesomeness ❤
Well AB like I’ve said I’m new to your channel but I’ve been cooking since I was 9 years old and I just turned 61 not to long ago,but I’m also disabled and and live by myself and it’s hard for me to cook, but with everything that I’ve learned just watching you and your videos you have made it so much easier on me and just wanted to say thank you and god bless and keep up the great work on your videos.🙏❤️😋
❤I decided last minute to make these candies yams! My husband hasn’t stopped talking about them!❤. Thanks so much. I never made them stove top. I did have the orange 🍊 tip under my belt already. 😉
Made this and your Mac and Cheese for Friendsgiving . You my good sir are a certified G in the kitchen , it all came out amazing and it was so simple . Hands down best content on RU-vid!
This is My third year using your recipe. Never found one better. Plus you are very entertaining. I love you sweetheart. God bless you. Happy blessed Thanksgiving to you and all your loved one!!!!
