in the 1940's and 1950's, our family lived close to this area and we spent time coming up to Chatsworth Station as we knew it then and to watch trains and take movies on Dad's old 16mm movie camera.
Really enjoyed the tour, Mark. Thanks. I'm native Californian and rail fan. Until this day, I did not know of this fabulous museum and railroad layout. The Espee lives ! I see a roadtrip for the wife and I , to this location. Thanks again, good job !
Some trivia: The Santa Susanna area was the filming location of western movies. The infamous Spahn Ranch was near the other end of the Santa Susanna Tunnel. Second, SPRINT evolved from the Southern Pacific microwave phone system. And lastly, I lived in Saugus up Bouquet Canyon. I went to Placerita Junior High and William S. Hart High School. The school bus stopped near the Saugus train station and dropped off one the kids there. He lived in the Saugus train station. The Saugus train station was moved to William S. Hart and was spared from demolition.
Thank you for adding such interesting anecdotal information to this video. Someone thought to start Sprint by observing the railroad - wow. Looks like a great place to grow up, but only you can comment on that. Thanks again.
@@someraiIfan When SP and Santa Fe were not allowed to merge, the controlling company at that time divided up SP assets. The real estate and such stayed with the controlling company I believe under the name Catellus. SP railroad was sold off. SP's microwave telephone system was spun off to a new company called Sprint.
I like that the Community came together and moved the depot to save it. The Bakersfield community need to do the same thing with the old depot on Baker St.
Wonderful video Mark. We live just up Kuehner near LA avenue and walk our dogs there at the station every Sunday morning. Wish I knew you were going to be there. It is a wonderful little museum and Kurt and Irene do a wonderful job with the station. Good job Mark.
Great tour Mark, the docent did an excellent job without hesitation and has a great speaking voice. The model railroad is excellent and it's nice to know that past members are remembered by the naming of some parts of the railroad. Thanks for the good work.
It was wonderful! We were treated like royalty. We were allowed to get in an hour early so the model train section wouldn't be crowded. For the rest of it, I like to see people visiting and speak with them in my videos. We also had some great sandwiches at a place on Los Angeles Avenue. We spent the weekend with friends who live in the area. It was a great weekend!
He really was! I'd liked to have recorded his entire tour, but it would have been too long. His knowledge of the depot, and the area in general, was amazing!
Been there many times, and the Model Train swapmeet next door in the park. I've even been allowed to run trains on their layout and the HDMMRC did a set up next door in a vacant warehouse.
Thank you Mark, That was a very enjoyable "tour". As a So Cal / Los Angeles native (now in San Diego) I remember some of the "landmarks" in the model train area. Got a chuckle out of the Brew 102 brewery, because I drove past the LA location many times in my early working years. Also the Spreckels Plant. San Diego was very familiar with John Spreckles and I have a friend who was a radio DJ on local stations and now on Sirius/XM whose father was a Steam Locomotive Engineer who worked on Speckles Rail Road.
Great video and very interesting history information Next time you come to Los Angeles stop by Travel Town it is a very nice museum about trains north of Griffith Park. We have an N scale model railroad layout club, it is named East Valley Lines (( i can give you an inside tour of it if you are interested ))
Hey Mark, I recently discovered your channel and happy to see you’re from the Bakersfield area. I love what I’ve seen so far. Do you have any videos depicting the Bakersfield SP Station? I’d love to see that location turned into a museum for the Bakersfield area train history.
Here is the link to my playlist about depots and stations. There is a two part tour of the old Bakersfield station I did while still working. I did make a mistake on the year it was built. I said 1875 (the year SP got to Bakersfield), but it was 1889 (the year Bakersfield became a division point). Thanks for checking it out! ru-vid.com/group/PL6ge3RoxmyvrlkERhZUtcRxm9YN0_C-V4
