Southern Region Steam's Final Farewell in July 1967

July 1967 was the final month where Southern steam would still be in service before their eventual replacement by EMU's and modern diesel locomotives. Sun 9th July 1967 was to be the very last day of scheduled steam haulage on the Southern region and a selection of Southern steam engines we're put on the front of a series of railtours and express trains. 35028 Clan Line, 35008 Orient Line & 34025 Whimple are three of the steam locomotives featured in the film.
One of the locomotives featured in the film 35028 Clan Line is today preserved and sees regular use hauling the British Pullman on trains out of London's Victoria and Waterloo. As of September 2023 she is presently out of action undergoing firebox and boiler repairs.

Very rare to see such good quality railway film from the 60s. The only other stuff I’ve seen this good, is a couple of Flying Scotsman documentaries that Pegler persuaded the BBC to do.

Sad days indeed, steam was withdrawn far too early as some we're not even close to 10 years old. Some only lasted 5 years but wonder how long the Bulleid Pacific's could have actually lasted in service as the rebuilt examples weren't even that old.

Steam could have lasted another 20 years but it was rushed out the br stands and the rebuilt bullieds where a waste

From my research /sources the rebuilt MN/BoB/WC were scheduled to be gone by 1987

3rd jan 1964 35008 orient line took us to southampton --the last i saw was the left number and name as we boarded the fairsea for australia-----cheers

Not the last day which was July 9. This was July 2, when 2 specials ran with 35028 and 35008. Neither loco worked on the last weekend.

I concur. My brother and myself were on that special pulled by 35028. Definitely 2nd July. Tickets were a special colour, almost pink. 82019 helped push us out and made a memorable racket.
