On a stormy night in July 2005, South Sudanese rebel-leader-turned-Vice-President John Garang de Mabior was flying back to Sudan after a two-day visit to his longtime friend, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda.
An hour into the journey, his helicopter crashed in a remote mountain area, killing everyone on board.
Air crash investigators concluded that bad weather and pilot error were the likely causes, but a range of theories have since emerged.
Is it possible that the death of Garang was more than an unfortunate accident? Garang's supporters, political opponents, and bodyguards, as well as journalists piece together the last days of his life.

What a coincidence that Mu7 a US ally first met the ambassadors who were after South Sudan oil. When Garang refuses to give them the oil, he dies in Mu7's chopper and is replaced by his rival Salvir Kir Mu7's puppet. Mysteriously the flight data recorder which would have backed up the claim of pilot error was irreparably damaged. This was an assassination!

I grew up with his son Mabior in Nairobi. He was really protected and had armed bodyguards who never used to speak, ever. They were South Sudanese and allowed to be armed in Kenya which taught me a lot about the system of protection of individuals in regards to national security. They lived in Runda in a massive mansion and eventually I lost touch with Mabior after his dad died and he told me that he is going home to fight. I was saddened by his father's death, although I had never met him cause he was at war when I spent time with his kids.

My understanding is that those who killed many of Africas great leaders whose aim was to Unite their countries and the whole of Africa is the same peoples who wouldn’t let 7 African leaders into Libya to speak with Colonel Gadaffi and stole the gold and other resources he stored to help Africa United to use one African Currency it is now in the pipeline to continue his wish, and the wish of other killed leaders that inspired Gadaffi ,his death also opened the eyes of many Africans, and Diaspora peoples of the globe.🌍It’s simple who was behind this as they are still doing the same to Mali Somalia Eritrea Sudan the ones who were there were NATO US paid African mercenaries blaming terrorist for it where has that gold and resources gone to The western countries that want to do, after enslaving and then colonising Africa dividing it into states that they fought over in WWI WWII after having enslaved and colonised them. They fought for independence though still are dictating to African countries, Gadaffi was sodomised Killed him in a barbaric way, yet call Africa as a whole savages. Africa is going to Unite eventually as it’s beneficial to all Africa States.🌍🌎👀First Change currency to one currency of the supreme Continent of Africa which has the most resources in the world that the west wants control of, they have done their damage and are continuing todo so around the world by proxy or actual invasion yet anyone else who invades for a righteous reason of protecting their borders are called terrorista huh the world 🌍🌎❤️❤️🫶🏿🫶🏾🫶🏽🫶🏻🫵🏿🫵🏾🫵🏽🫵✊🏽is changing the meek shall inherit the earth not the evil greedy murderers of this world peoples. 🌍🌎

Hardly unbiased. It probably starts with the fact that North Sudan knew of his flight plans, even though he tried to keep them private, and then very conveniently ALL of his Arab body guards were ordered NOT to accompany him on this one trip alone that just so happened to end in his death and that all Arab reporters just so happen to see "groups of unidentified Americans" all milling around the middle of nowhere Uganda where they just so happened to remove vital "evidence". Sounds more like a plot by North Sudan to get rid of John Garang because he was going to insist that Sudan pay full royalties on the pipeline that transported their oil out of South Sudan to Port Sudan and then onto oil refineries around the world. This would have resulted in a loss of over half of North Sudan's oil revenues.

By then I was working as a presidential guard in Uganda,when that tragedy happen,it happened few hours after escorting him to entebbe military base,I can guarantee that this was an inside mission,after he left in a presidential chopper,we drove back to the state house but the president museven was busy in a private meeting with the USA,United kingdom, Netherlands and Norway's ambassadors. After his dealth, lummour started spreading in the barracks that there was a disagreement in the meeting between garanga and his bosses about dividing Sudan and that was the reason why they had to eliminate him through their agent museven. So now I agree % that museven was behind the dealth of garanga.

Thank you, Al Jazeera, for this documentary. We are left with more questions than answers, that will remain forever, because the world moved on. In the end, the biggest question in my mind is: " Who/which country benefits the most from the Project South Sudan?"
@manyangthonmapuormalual8632
No doubt, the death of our hero is because of his leaning toward communist ideology and his denial to separate South Sudan from Sudan. The interest groups of the USA, Israel, and many other Western countries are the main suspects in the death of our hero. Their interest in the oil sector and other materials and their lack of access to these resources in United Sudan makes them think no further than to kill innocent Garang. Rest In Peace My Hero 😢.

I had parked our aircraft at Entebbe Airport, nearby a helicopter came and landed, i walked to the helicopter and greeted the pilots who were on air force uniforms, in few minutes a Citation business jet with Kenyan registration landed and thats when i saw John Garang going to the helicopter, they took off going south, day after I woke to news of the crash in North Uganda, until today I still remember the faces of these airforce pilots. I believe the time eventually they decided to fly north it was getting dark and as these choppers usually fly low it must have flown into the mountains. It's sad indeed for those pilots whom I greeted and met for the first and last time.

The American journalist obviously doesn’t know what he is talking about. Garang didn’t want the secession of South Sudan from Sudan. He was dreaming about a new Sudan where citizens would have equal rights and opportunities regardless of race and beliefs. Meanwhile, a big number of SPLM members in the South were against that ideology. If Garang ‘s death wasn’t an accident , either the West who felt betrayed by him or some individuals within the SPLM did it. Garang ‘s relationship with his deputy Salva Kiir at the time wasn’t good. One can even be tempted to speculate that he played a role in his death as he benefited greatly from it afterwards. But we can’t be certain about that as there is no proof. I don’t think Garang ‘s death was the work of the government of Sudan. The Sudanese government had nothing to gain from it , and that was proved by the separation of the south in 2011 . If Garang was alive, I strongly believe this could never happen.

He is not wrong. Only that Dr. John was misunderstood by many South Sudanese who didn't pay much attention to the CPA he crafted and signed. First of all, it was him who crafted the "Right to self-determination". It says in Part II, ARTICLE 2.5 that "There shall be an internationally monitored referendum, jointly organize by GoS and SPLAM/A for the people of South Sudan to confirm the unity of the Sudan by voting to adopt the system of government establish under the CPA or to vote for secession". What did he want in this? or you misunderstood him too in his speeches he tried to sweet talk NCP to not violate the agreement before six years end? He was smart and there was not way he was going to go openly and campaign for secession in the 21 days he spent in the office as VP. In addition, Government of Southern Sudan was established intentionally in Part III of the CPA to prepare officials and South Sudanese in general to be able to manage their country after secession. There was no any other region in the Sudan who had autonomous government other than us. This was done deliberately the SPLM/A led Dr. John Garang and his comrades. We also trained and equipped our then SPLA to defend yourself should NCP dispute or violate or dispute the results referendum in future. The consignment of tanks and other hardware were procured before Dr. John and they were later smuggled in the Southern Sudan to arm SPLA. Also, CPA stipulated that all Sudan Armed Forces should withdraw from Southern Sudan and go to 1956 border, the current Sudan-South Sudan. This was done deliberately by Dr. John Garang to pave the way for secession through referendum or unilateral declaration should Sudan government impede referendum. Lastly, SPLM/A leaders didn't have the capability then to kill him in foreign land. They were not that connected to the extend of convincing M7, the West, or the pilot to murder him whatsoever. If they had that capability, Riak Machar would have killed him first in his foreign trips before he disagreed with Salva Kiir. So lets be realistic in the analysis of Dr. John;s intentions about separation. So lets not his speeches mislead us to see him as unionist when was not.

As an Eritrean born in Sudan, I remember this event when I went back to Sudan in 2005 aged 16 to see my family. At the time it was very hostile and lots of unrest in Khartoum. We all know he was assassinated by the Americans and/or Europeans so that they could divide the country and then steal its resources. Nearly 20 years later and Sudan has only become worse. With that still they want to divide it again, what a shame. Bashir was better than today and it’s been proven.
