New Jersey righted one of our greatest wrongs last when Southside Johnny was inducted into the state Hall of Fame and Jon’s speech was a thing of beauty. It was perfect because he meant every single word of it. You made us all proud, Jon.
Way way back on July 24, 1977, Johnny and the band opened for ELP in Toronto. I had never heard of the band. 10 minutes into the ELP set the audience was shouting bring back Johnny. I went out a few days later bought an LP and have enjoyed his music ever since.
Sir, I saw you perform many times at the Bijou on K street next to the DC Potomac River. You ALWAYS DELIVERED! No matter how humid it was in August (remember that comment?) The South. Amazing times seeing you. Thank you.
I must say , I was not really a Bon Jovi fan even though he lives walking distance from me in Holmdel . But,His speech blew me away. He captured it right on thr money . I have always been a SSJ fan, and Hearing a guy who made it bigger talk about SSJ this way was most humbling. Tell u what jon, Im gonna give u another go!. And whoever thought to capture and post rhis speec was a genius
If you are looking for something better, forget about it,because it ain`t out there.. This is the music in my sound track to life. Thank you South for all the songs through all the years ,all the shows and all those horns. sing on because we are still listening.....peace,pj
Southside and the Jukes songs were the best. My personal sound track for the late 70 until today. They were soul. Bon Jovi was Rock. And Bruce was the Boss. LOL.
I grew up in SF as Southside's stuff was just coming out in the mid 70's. Our FM station KSAN featured him a lot and I got to know his style which you could recognize in Springteen's material I was in a band at the time with friends who liked his stuff also. In 1979, I went to NY to be with my girlfriend (now my wife for 34 years) and in 1980 got busted for the first and only time in my life on the Jersey Shore on 4th of July for drinking a Schaefers beer on the beach. When the cops took me in to the station the other cops said "Oooh you guys got a live one there!" They called me "Schaefers" after the cheap beer I was drinking. It's my real-life Jersey Shore memory and I still didnt want to go home! Greetings and congrats to Southside from SF!
Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes are the only band I've witnessed earning encores supporting Graham Parker & The Rumour, Usher Hall, Edinburgh c.1977. Had the pleasure of seeing The Jukes many times since.
Can't say enough good things about Johnny and the Jukes. How Springsteen became a legend while the guy with all the soul stood in his shadow is beyond me.
Yeah one of THE GREAT soul bands ever that got lost along the way! But there's usually stuff going on in the background that you never know about. Bon Jovi's mentioning that Johnny didn't play by anybody's rules but his own may be a hint to that. I've known others over the decades that probably could have gone big time but there were "things" in the shadows of that industry that they couldn't be a part of and now days there are some absolutely satanic things that some of the biggest artists are EXPECTED to take part in! Just watch the last several Grammy awards shows if you can stomach the music
