Thanks for sharing! This was interesting and kind of trip to see as I haven't been in Red Bird Mall since probably 2000. As a suburban teenager in the mid to late 90s I lived in Denton about 40 miles north of Red Bird and was really into obscure underground rap music at the time. Every couple months I would make the trek down there to Sam Goody in Red Bird (and to Big T Plaza also) to buy rare rap CDs and tapes from artists nobody ever heard of or cared about; stuff that I couldn't find in the burbs. It was a treasure trove for that hobby of mine back in the day. Fast forward to 20 years later and there are collector from all over the world who pay top dollar for this old obscure music. I've paid my mortgage several times by the selling off my collection. Random anecdote, I know.
I remember buying my first NES game there: Contra. You had to take the little paper slip up front and get the game from lockup after you paid. That and a shit ton of X-Men figures lol. So sad they closed it down. Cedar Hill's, too. :/ RIP.
If you like this type of vibe, listen to this set of my favorite dj. His name is Eric Prydz he plays a lot of music inspired by the 80s. This is my fav set by him in EDC Vegas back in 2015. Take a listen. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AC2yGjXMK2c.html
A call center is a good repurposing of one of those big former anchors. Surprised they can get it together in two months. Hopefully that and the full redevelopement of the place will help the community. One thing I noticed is that vintage Foot LOcker which looks like it hasnt been updated since it opened. The mall could use some fixing up, but the owners seem on the right track. Thanks for visiting and filming these places most of us may have never heard of unless we are local to the area.
Man I remember the good old days there. School clothes shopping, movies, awesome arcade, brothers pizza. First Chick fil a in Dallas was here. Met lots of girls at this mall. Man I'm gonna cry lol. Red Bird was the place to be.
Went to Wyatt's cafeteria, then to Foot Action, Kmart was across the street, then a movie at Red Bird theater, then the Mall for the arcade....sometimes Chili's and then the Blockbuster next to Ross
The movie theaters past the parking lot and the giant fountains in the mall. Those were the days! All day at Aladdin's Castle with Brothers Pizza and Orange Julius.
I know some people crying gentrification, but let's be honest - No one goes there, anymore. Anything to make it thriving helps the community. It's overdue. I haven't been there in ages, but I'm actually excited to see what becomes of it now, as I still live within 5 minutes of it.
I love the design of this mall. The ceilings are key. I'm happy to hear it's getting a second chance to thrive. I wish a bright future for the mall moving forward. Thanks for the music info on bandcamp. I will check them out.
Awesome! This will help the community that has taken a plunge over the years.. Its present state is heartbreaking. Cheers to the return of Red Bird Mall.Happy that it wasn't demolished like Valley View Mall which will soon be Amazon Center. Great things are happening in DFW... Greens Point Mall you guys will be next..
When I was a kid we would go there. I remember seeing George Goble there when it opened. The was a show is pizza place there then it turned into Chuckie Cheese. It was a happening place. I remember that John Wiely Price pushed for the name change because people outside of the area called it " black bird" mall. I sat many of nights in the Sears parking lot to get concert tickets at ticketmaster. Texxas Jamm and ozzy. Ratt and Dokken. Great times
My grandmother used to work at the Macy's there God bless her soul. Hell she was working there when it was still Foley's. I used to throw events at a club they used to have there too. I'm glad that they're cleaning it up. I remember when the foodcourt had neon lights as well. I hate that they took it out. 🙄
My childhood mall!! Can't decide if this video is sad or hopeful. I was a teenager in the late 80s and this is where me and my friends went every weekend. We would go to a movie, then the food court, and after that, walking around aimlessly just because. Hate seeing it this way, but glad it's being repurposed!
Hmm, there's a Super Kmart in Colorado that was partially converted to a call center.Really, quite a nice mall for being old, probably would've been amazing to see it 20 years ago! On that note, I'm glad to hear it's lucky enough to get a second chance. 👍
Besides the person that was killed at the Walmart nearby, I've heard from multiple sources that the real reason the Walmart was closed was because of major, constant theft, I've heard the area suffers from alot of theft, interesting to see how they balance this out for the mall.
Yes. That’s why this mall went under several times. Too many thieves not enough shoppers. Big stores and small left because too much chaos. Fights at that mall. It was crazy! I hope they beef up security and stay consistent w/ it.
It is unfortunately a very high crime area relative to the rest of DFW. Creuzot's decision to not prosecute thefts valued under $900 probably won't help matters either. It's sad because south Dallas needs all the development it can get.
The main court used to have a pit with red carpet and long ramps going down to shops. There was a piano store down there, and the suited salesman would play music that filled the entire area with a special ambiance.
The original cookie place was soooooo bomb ! My dad would take me to go get cookies all the time on Fridays when he got hair cuts. I remember the fashion shows
I remember when my sister and I were younger and our parents would take us here to get shoes and it was doing good. Now you go in there and it’s just empty :(
Tie-chiz 😂 my dad was on the construction crew for Red Bird Mall, it was so nice. You are confusing the esthetics now with the original look. There was carpet everywhere. When it became Southwest Center Mall is when those adobe murals were painted, but that was not in the 80’s. I remember seeing the 1984 Olympic metal winners there, my brother had a mad crush on Mary Lou Retton lol, so we crammed in there with thousands of other people to see them. I’m glad something useful will happen in this space, the local economy needs it.
I use to go to the this mall as a kid in the mid 90’s, also remember big town mall before it got demolished. Mostly sticked to going to towneast mall since I used to live near there in pleasant grove.
I hope the community appreciates the investments that are being made around the neighborhood. We as the community travel to other cities to do our shopping and say that other communities have better malls, movie theaters ect. But now that new investments are coming we need to take care of out shopping centers, don’t trash this place down, don’t send your kids to hang out with their friends.
Once AGAIN, you are ON in regards to the music!! LOVE Timecop1983, perfect for Dead Malls. I have plenty of Dead Mall music in my collection. If you want some help or suggestions with that, just let me know. Keep up the great work, Anthony! :)
Same. I grew up nearby and still live within 5 minutes of the place, and I still haven't been in 20yrs. I'd rather go to the outlet mall in Grand Prairie or The Parks.
If you are still here in Dallas Collin Creek closed already I think. You should see if u can see how it looks. Not very many stores at all when I went over a year ago.
I grew up in this mall when they had a GOOD lemonade and corny dog store, an Aladdin’s arcade, and a games plus store. I worked in the Electronics boutique for a while and saw the absolute laziness of remodeling and crime destroy this place. Anyone from around here needs to be fucking honest. Unless the people around there grows up, nothings going to change.
I frequently visit the Park's mall and Northeast mall, built on busy commercial metropolitan and intersecting metroplexes, where they get tons of foot traffic. I love the look of this mall, always had. It's a shame so many aesthetic malls are endangered. Glad this one is getting a new lease.
hated going there as a kid bc my mom would spend hours trying on clothes lol kind of bitter sweet to see the current state it's in but the renovation plans look promising
Worked security there for a year we had the same problems other malls have. The occasionall theft and occasional fight I really enjoyed working there. Met a lot of great people working there.
Ive been to this mall a few times in the 80s/early 90s. Isn't the one off of I-20 near Duncanville? Haven't been there in many years.. I used to live within walking distance of The Parks mall which was pretty cool. Haven't lived out there in over 25 yrs though.
It's a shit hole I promise all the black people there are claiming the asbestos is in the air and sick. Next you might not hear about due to Dallas being short on police but I guess your not familiar about the grandys robbery or the random shout out at the car show in the parking lot in the last 6 months?
Caro Williams it's not a safe place anymore if they demolished it and moved on it would be best. Mark my words it will fail but I hope it don't because they should spent money on hiring police officers not a shit hole.
