Your last words ring very true. I remember shortly after Irpin was de- occupied, seeing a picture of a fellow cutting overgrown grass with a lawnmower along a main street in front of a heavily damaged building. Picture worth 1000 words.

The pilot of a glider, with which he often flies in Austria near the Czech border, told me that he knows from the size of the fields alone whether he is already flying over Czech territory or whether he is still in Austria without looking at a map. Due to the after-effects of collectivisation, the fields in the Czech Republic are much larger than in Austria, where they were often divided into smaller parts by inheritance.

In America, when we were taught about the Soviet Union, we were presented the concept of collectivization simply as an economic failure, and the ripping of the social fabric as you describe was somehow left out... 🤔 ...Very enlightening topic Anna...

Hi Ana, Thank you so much for putting this video essay together. My mother and father were born in Eastern Ukraine prior to 1920 and lived through the Holodomor. I grew up on Mama's stories about the Russificiation of Ukraine, rozkulachenya of my grandfather and her resourcefulness in order to survive herself and get her family through the famine. My father spent 2 years in Siberia. He was lucky because his brother was a party member and was able to secure his release. In the mess of the second world war, they were able to make their way to Europe, escape forced re-patriation and eventually ended up in Canada. Growing up, all of those horrible experiences seemed far away, but now the Ukrainian nation is facing a new threat that feels an awful lot like the old Stalinist threat. As it's been said, History doesn't repeat itself but if often rhymes. Keep up the good work! You and all the Ukrainians have broad international support. We will stand with Ukraine to the end of this conflict!! Slava Ukraini!! Heroim Slava!!

Hi Anna. I want to thank you very much for your presentation. I am married to an Estonian who lived half her life,30 years under Soviet occupation and much of what you said concurs with the stories she has told me. I want to share one short poignant story with you. When she was a little girl her father was arrested by the Soviet authorities. She asked ‘what has my dad done wrong’. He was a motor mechanic and due to a death in the family he inherited another car. This was against the rules (law). I am British and I find this true story hard to believe in a free society. So thank-you for putting this in context. Stay safe.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇦🇪🇪

There are some things to mention additionally. Already in the 1920's, the Socialists did destroy the agrarian productivity of the so called Mir. The "German-influenced" Stolypkin multiplied their power twentyfold to that in 1905! They forced everyone to work and shot those which fled to increase output. In the 1930's, the Socialists didn't increase the production in comparison to the increased population, what is one reason, why so many people on the Soviet territory were forced to fight for a living, as they got support from the West and Moscow. Socialists forcefully settled many people to the Moscow and St. Petersburg areas. While these areas could not feed themselves, the production and food was taken from the Ukraine, also with the purpose to restrict any trade option with Central Europe. The Ukraine did not only suffer from that, but in the wake of the destruction of Austrian-Hungary, the (Socialist ruled) West did restrict food trade to Europe and Austria/Germany. That meant, that Ukrainians did not only lost their land and production to a level of just 10%, but they couldn't get anything from outside as there was nothing there and for a payable price. This food was used by the Nomenklatura, and some of it was traded to Central Europe to have money to pay peasants. Trotzki in contrast didn't want to pay them, but give food to anybody, what started again in 1939. During WWII Soviet Ukrainians were most likely to be dependant on working for Socialism or even fighting for it to survive. The Order No. 227 came after Roosevelt forced Stalin to hold the line, what had special meaning to Ukrainians, because they couldn't escape to Europe (because there was no food) and couldn't fight for themselves, because Soviets would have killed them. After the Second World War, this payment was reduced and with the rehabilitation of Trotzki food was again handed out.

when i was still young about 11 years old (early 70s), i had to go to work on the farms here in the usa. the reason was because we had to work extra and plant more grain to send to the ussr. the usa government would buy the grain from usa farmers and then sell it to the ussr because the ussr was not able to produce enough grains from their collective farms. this was because of the ussr using obsolete farming technology and practices but that were political correct and according to the ussr 5 year planning.... the usa is the largest producer of oil products in the world but still the usa would then buy oil from the ussr to provide the oil to europe. this arrangement continued until the fall of the ussr. at that point, western farm methods and experts were sent to the former ussr nations in order to increase production and develop western farm technology in the former ussr.... here in the usa, we understood, that while we were helping the ussr to feed its population, the ussr was busy making weapons to destroy the usa... but here in the usa, we knew about the horrors that occurred in china that were happening during the 50s into the 70s and most of americans did not want that to happen if we could help stop that horror happening in other parts of the world like the ussr... there is a small city in the state of missouri, usa. the city is named fulton. this small city has an university called westminster college. it is where winston churchill gave his "iron curtain" speech in 1946 and since then world leaders including mikhail gorbachev and ronald reagan have given speeches ... freedom starts with the ability to feed yourself ... an old farmer saying here is the usa is "pride doesn't put food on the table" and the ussr is proof that saying is true... stand with ukraine equals stand for freedom...

A couple of weeks ago you did that beautiful stroll around the countryside around your city, with the churches, the brids, the fields. It must have been early October, when these mopeds started flying around, in particular Mondays. It would be very interesting, if you - following up that Myth12-episode - would just meet and talk to a typical contemporary farmer's family there, how they experienced life and development out of the USSR, the last 25 years and what they expect, hope or fear of the future - assume the future will be in the EU. Assuming one of your next Myths-episodes will be about industrial labour in Soviet-times, similar would be interesting with industrial workers. Anna, congratulations! They shows us a kolkhoz in the Kuban a long time ago, it was all spruced up and looked nice, but: two things a) You could see, looking at the fields, that the tomatoes were not growing properly and b) I later got to know one of the very pretty girls there and she told me - which I already knew - that it was a terrible place and she and her friends all hated being forced to work there. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 Слава Україні! 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

Great video Anna! Why are USSR/russians so fixated with having Tsar/dictator type of rule? Do they enjoy be treated badly? Thank you for a great lesson! I look forward to Ukraine in EU and in NATO! Good presentation. Might have even more impact if a personal story from your family could be added.

Anna; you need to watch Denys Davydov's video from yesterday, titled Update from Ukraine | Strange moves from Ruzzia in Kherson, and watch from the 6:00 minute mark on. This should give you some security from Ukraine being destroyed, I advise anyone else to watch the video from that seg point too. Especially those from European and all parts of Western world. It gives me pretty good security.

"hopefully in that joined european family". In the European hearts and minds, you already are members of the family. Being integrated in the NATO and EU is just a question of time and administrative processes.

Compare Anna to someone like the Russian Margarita Simonyan. Which would you believe or trust? Which uses fact and logic? Which actually informs?
