Hi Chetan, the trick is quite simple: You illuminate the sample with light, some is absorbed by the molecular vibrations of the material, mainly overtones and combination vibrations of -CH, -NH or -OH groups. The rest is reflected and collected with the detector inside the spectrometer. The information in the resulting spectrum can be accessed by multivariate data processing and evaluation methods to analyze the sample composition.
