When fungicides are effectively applied to protect soybean plants growers can expect to see more uniform and bigger seed size when the combine rolls through fields at harvest.
On this episode of the RealAgriculture Soybean School, BASF Canada agronomist Ken Currah says growers can harvest heavier and denser seed, which produces extra bushels, when they do a good job of timing and targeting fungicide at the R2.5 growth stage.
"It may be a hair later if we're in a two-pass program where that first pass was for white mould. But if you're trying to drive some yield and some seed quality and seed weight, and take advantage of that good yield foundation that the field has, it's R2.5."
In the video, Currah looks at the many factors that can influence onset and severity of yield-robbing white mould, including farm location, field history, growing environment, variety selection row withs and canopy. He also shares crop staging tips to help target applications for white mould and explains why it's important to limit the number of products in the tank at fungicide application if the crop is under stress.
