SP PD-8 Hub. Replacing the bearing.

My 4 year old SP dynamo just gave up. Instead of mailing it to Taiwan for service, i decided to take my chance and open it up. It´s pretty easy to open the hub and remove one of the bearings, but the other one is more of a hassle, instead of killing the hub i just replaced the damaged one. Please share if you know how to replace the other bearing.

this is a great video. Just acquired one of these hubs and read that it was "not serviceable" but this video makes it look not so bad. One trick i have from working on motorcycles is that to install a bearing you can heat the receiving end and freeze the bearing. then the bearing just drops in and as soon as the temps normalize the bearing is locked. I have heated aluminum to 300 f in the oven before but not sure if there is some finish on the hub that temp may hurt. It never hurts an aluminum motorcycle engine.

I'll probably take a try at this with my PD-8X which is slightly different but shouldn't be all that much more complicated. Nice video

Damn, shame I will need to de-lace the wheel to open the hub!

I've been procrastinating doing it for a year now. I've got mine running a nice e3 headlight or was.

Thx for the video ! Very helpful and I didn't find much more informations about how disassemble SP Hubs on the internet. Cheers and keep going :)

Thanks! This repair shows just that's doable - no magic :) too bad it's not sealed. But then again so are my bb bearings...

Good video. How to disable the hub without disassembling it? It slows me down.

I was dumb enough for twisting the hub connector around, and now it seems like internal wires broke because multimeter shows no resistance on connector. Now I need to undo the wheel and disassemble the hub and try to restore connection. Anyone know how to do that?

Are these bearings standard? What can I look for to order? Thanks

I just went to my local repair shop for a replacement. I bought this bearing: 6000 2RS/2A. When i Google it this comes up: DIN 625, 10x26x8mm. Regards.

Jóhannes Andri Kjartansson did you ever replace the other bearing? Do you know if it’s the same size?

New hubs from the SP have round ends now, with the help of a needle I did not find the threads inside the "cap" on the connector side. So, most likely, new hubs have a press fit ends now.

i can confirm at least the disk side is now a press fit, I filed flats in both sides but it just spun without coming off, some force with a spanner popped it off. i Have ordered a puller type tool to try to remove the other side, will see how it goes.

That´s a shame :(

Both sides are now push fit, I used a cheap puller tool to remove (ebay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Merry-Tools-HK-Mini-Arm-Puller-3-Bearing-Puller-Gear-Puller-450490/292816835836?epid=842540314&hash=item442d3e54fc:g:WVcAAOSwXc9b7A9u). Its actually not too hard, I replaced the bearings on both sides.

@@squiresuzuki my hub is a pd-8, no thru-axel . Centre of the bearing puller pushed against the axel, centred in the qr hole, to remove the end caps. Then used a vice to push the bearings out of the housing half

And when the hub is in the wheel 🤔
@StrengthCircusDD

You must unlace the hub to service it. That's the main selling point for SON dynamos
@SlidingTheTube

Don’t risk it in my opinion. I’ve just ruined my hub believing it was ‘so straight forward’ .. when you disconnect the two halves of the shell, the chance of it reconnecting are slim and is needed for the dynamo to function. I think I’d have been happier paying for the return service the manufacturer offers.. too late for that now 😕

Shame on Shutter Precision for designing a hub that can only be serviced back in Taiwan. Mine is twelve years old, still going strong, but I may just trash it when the bearing fails and replace it with a Schmidt. By that time the rims will need replacing too.
