I wish I lived there. I have 2 elderly pigs that both have issues. One has to be seen soon because of a cyst that is open on her side. Not a huge one so it was kept well hidden and I don’t handle her a lot because she doesn’t like to be picked up. Just scratches on the head and chin. COVID hit hard and at the same time my son became really sick lately. I thought about finding a new home for them now that my son can’t take care of them but I feel like a failure even thinking about it. It might be what’s best though. I’m disabled myself so caring for them is a bit difficult.
@@nunyabusiness464 I get it. I had a high maintenance dog, she finally passed, of old age, and I decided on a hamster. They're not heavy, easy care, etc. They're really cute too!
I agree! It's quite a bit of work maintaining them. When I had 2 guinea pigs which I thought were both males, and as it turned out one of them was a female and the other was a male. So the girl became pregnant and had babies! From then on I just took the guinea pigs to the pet store to get rid of them. Otherwise they would have multiplied worse than rabbits!
It’s the same with hamsters. People get hamsters as pets for their kids but they don’t really learn all they can about hamsters and provide them with what they need. I had several hamsters as an adult and they required specific care to be really happy.
I think the problem is people don't realize just how high maintenance guinea pigs can be. I had no idea they required so much of these things before I found this channel. Thank goodness for Saskia and this channel helping to educate all the pet owners out there. You are doing a remarkable thing 👏 🙌 ❤ 🖤
I had Guinea pigs when I was young, 30 years ago, and I didn't need to do anything accept feed them well and clean the cage. Mine lived quite a few years. Maybe genetics are responsible.
Its funny how alot of guineapigs dislike bath time yet I had an elderly rescue male guineapig that would be upset if you took him out as he loved baths, he would spread himself out and chill and squeel when you had to eventually take him out lol
I love when Saskia and Scotty do videos together! They are such good, long term friends that it’s always funny and entertaining. They truly had Zap looking fantastic by the end!
My only experience with a guinea pig has been looking through a glass enclosure at a pet store for a couple seconds. I never knew they had such a sweet demeanor. These little ones have won my heart. I am officially a guinea pig fan!
Haha, Scotty did not seem to enjoy the boar cleaning lol. He did not get the same satisfaction that Saskia did. I’m also glad you mentioned getting a vet to look for stones. When you said he was peeing and peeing, I was thinking uti or stone. I have a boy who has had UTI twice and each time leaking urine has been the symptom. Great video. thanks for sharing. 🐾🎃🐾
@@lisasilversmith it can signify a few things, diabetes being one of them. Dropping weight often goes hand in hand with that. If there are changes with a piggy, behaviors or eating and drinking etc, it’s always worth investigating. 😀
Glad to find you two...1st time here....subscribing. Zap is very handsome. Just passed this along to a friend that has female GP not quite a year old. I know she would never think of washing her. I clipped her nails for her. I'm 64 now...but had a GP in my 20's Ginny she died at 8 if my memory serves me. She was a beautiful brindle. Thank you for all the fantastic advice.
I am 58 years old. And I have a question. Why are all your pigs so gentle? I've owned a number of them in my life, and they were all absolute squealing buttheads 🤣🤣. They just run away squealing whenever you would try to grab them. You couldn't hold them. it was like trying to hold a wild Bobcat or something! What is the trick to making them so calm? I have cancer. And I would really like to have one as a support animal I guess would be the right phrase? But not one that's going to do nothing but squeal, and pee and poop all over me every chance it gets 😪😪
First of all, I hope you used the term "grab" in jest because if you're just reaching in and trying to grab them then of course they're going to want to get away from you. They're prey animals, the only reason for the existence on the planet is to be food for other animals (including humans) it is inherent instinct for them to flee FROM EVERYTHING. It takes time, patience and dedication. EVERY pig is different, they all have their own personalities. Some are more skittish than others while some will learn to trust you quickly. They are ALL highly food motivated. They need to be in a quiet, calm environment away from loud noises (banging pots & pans, loud tv's etc) sit near the cage and allow them to come to you at first, progressively get closer and/or offer food (hold onto it). The more you handle them or at least try, the quicker it will happen. Some pigs will never get over their prey instinct (the fear that everything is going to gobble them up so they must run away). One of mine was like that, it was always a hassle getting her out of the cage, as she got older it was easier and once I had her in my arms she was fine. One thing you can do is have a cuddle cup or cuddle sack, corral them into it and then pick the whole thing up, cuddle cup with piggie inside, then sit that on your lap or next to you on the bed/couch but leave them in it, offer a treat and a head scratch. My point is, you have to earn their trust, they aren't going to just love you
Saskia has a taming video that helped me. It involved tabletop training. I saw improvement on the second day. The second thing that helped me was what I call the "Slow One Finger" method for petting a guinea pig in the cage. When Saskia wants to approach the pig, she slowly (as in slow-motion) uses one index finger (not the whole hand) to approach the pig. If the pig runs away, she uses that finger to slowly follow him. If he runs away again, she calmly follows him again. Sooner or later the pig will stop somewhere in the cage and then the finger can slowly pet him on the nose or forehead. Then move your finger away before he has a chance to run away from you. If you can do this several times a day, you will see a calmer guinea pig. The third thing that helped me was using a snuggle pod/cuddle cup to pick them up instead of my hands. Scotty has a video called "Three Ways to Pick Up A Guinea Pig." I'm near your age and recently resumed owning guinea pigs after a hiatus of about 15 years. I am loving it although it's really expensive buying fleece pads, hay, etc. Also purchase exotic animal insurance by Nationwide because exotic vets are about as expensive as primary physicians are for humans. Good luck if you decide to go for it.
@@trailrider2571 thank you for your response. I'm going to look up the video as I believe I am a subscriber to Scotty's Channel And I will also check in to Nationwide and see how that works. Thank you friend.
@@mszoomy yes you are correct. Sadly after having watched a number of the LA rescue videos, I realized that reaching in with my whole hand from above, chasing, and attempting to grab the Guinea pigs are the wrong way. I do very much appreciate your reply. As well as your comments and advice. Thank you very much friend!
I had a few pigs when I was a high school kid. 2 white ones and a sable colored one. Never knew about cleaning the genital areas. Thank you, you are doing a great job.
It's nice seeing more videos from you again. Glad to see you recovering. That pig looks amazing for being 6 years old. His parents take good care of him and they sent him to board at the best place in the world for guinea pigs.
0:11 The live begins with Guinea Pig Zap peeing and Saskia cleaning it up. Zap is a regular boarding customer at the L.A. Guinea Pig Rescue and Saskia and staff have grown very attached to him. It's not hard to see why.💖🐹 0:56 Saskia Introduces Volunteer Scotty from Scotty's Animals. Scotty is the cameraman for this video and Scotty is going to give Zap a bath. Saskia recommends that you give your guinea pigs a bath at least twice a year. You can do it four times a year, and it really will make a difference, because guinea pigs are so prone to fungus. You can use generic head & shoulders, or a really good antifungal shampoo that I also like to use is Davis miconazole shampoo ( Saskia uses it ) and has A link with a list of everything she uses in the video description. It works great.💯🐹🐹 1:49 Saskia does a health check on Zap first before his up coming bath. It is actually raining outside there. California doesn't get very much rain so seeing it on her videos is not too common. 2:27 Saskia talks about putting a little bit of olive oil in his ears to help remove all the excess dead skin cells but not going into the ear canal. 3:05 Saskia says this is what guinea pig complaining sounds like and you can hear Zap complaining. He has a wheek to pick with Saskia.🐹 4:06 Saskia is really checking Zap down good for parasites, because pigs can get them so easily and so fast. Saskia also uses ivermectin treatments every month. Ivermectin kills lice, mites, and internal parasites. An Saskia has a link in the video description for everything she uses on her videos. You can also use Ivermectin paste if you have a small herd. Saskia said she learned about using ivermectin from a veterinarian . Saskia has a lot of experience with guinea pigs❗💯 6:10 Saskia goes to check the pigs teeth and Scotty zooms in with the camera so we can get a good look at the piggies teeth. while Saskia explains about looking for food stuck in their teeth as that can cause bacteria and cause a fungus or cheilitis 8:12 Saskia shows us cleaning the pigs pocket. As they get older the skin around the scent marker weakens and poop can get stuck in the pocket on the perennial sack. 10:02 Saskia pulls out a sperm rod and cleans all around the pigs wiener 11:20 Scotty takes Zap for his bath and he shows us the set up he has to bathe the piggy in. 11:47 Saskia dispels a myth about bathing your guinea pigs with words to watch on the screen while we also watch and listen to Scotty as he bathes Zap. They have bathed well over 3000 guinea pigs in the past few years. This is Very good advice. 15:43 Scotty uses the blow dryer on Zap., 16:40 Zap looks absolutely Beautiful nice shiny coat. He looks very health for a six year old pig. Wow what a difference❗💯 17:20 Saskia does her famous Butt Cut, trimming the guinea pigs fur on his back end to make his fur look all nice, 18:30 Saskia tell us how Zap used to have fungal foot and how she treated it and how much better it look now as she trims zaps nails 19:39 Scotty tells us about the Steptic powder which they use if they accidentally hit the quick when cutting a piggies nails. It happens to even the best of them. They are currently out of steptic powder but what does Saskia does have is Mary's CBD balm which you can also use on yourself this is really great stuff. 22:44 Saskia talks about just how much the pig is peeing and leaking urine so Saskia is going to refer the customer to see the Dr. to figure out whats going on there. Saskia says it could possibly be a stone causing that. An than they say good bye to us. Thank You Saskia and Scotty. This video is very helpful.❗💯🐹🐹
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue Time stamps at least appear in the comment but youtube wouldn't let me post these as a comment for some reason I hope these are showing up on your end.
Thank you Saskia and Scotty, I love the boar cleaning vids. Zap is STUNNING!! I use clippers for butt trims on my long haired boar cause using scissors scares me (he's a drama queen). I'm a bit of a weirdo, I get great satisfaction from cleaning out my boys pockets 🤣 getting all the treasures as Saskia would say! Hope the wee situation is okay, bye Zap, thanks for being such a gorgeous model Xxxxx 🐽🐽🐽🐽🐽🐽♥️
I don't think I could ever own a guinea pig after watching her videos. I thought you just cuddle these critters and let em grow. I didn't know about the penis cheese and foot crust 🙄😮💨
Hi Shasia and Scotty 🙂 as always a pleasure watch your videos 👌you just said bath 2 times a year?😲wow !think I doing wrong wash them every couple of weeks 😐 too match ? bud they get dirty belly and the boomboo get wet is oK? please let me know if possible? hugs 🤗💜😽🐖🐖

I love the special effect you added to the video. It's cool to experiment with those. My pig can be such a drama pig when it comes to bathing him. If I'm Not careful he will jump up on me and climb down my shirt.🐹🐹
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue I didn't get a notification for this. I only saw your response because I came back here to look at something I typed and I happened to notice this. RU-vid only notifies me when you heart something, but not when you leave a response. I did the timestamps for this.
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue DONE!!! Also, just so you know. RU-vid wouldn't allow the timestamps in the comments of the sales video. They will allow the timestamps here and on the regular lives in the comments, because it's about guinea pigs. They wont though on the live sales video at least not in the comments. But I will gladly Still timestamp the sales videos after the live ends. I just want you to know about that. Thanks
Hi saskia! Thanks for improving my guinea pig care :) I’m getting maxi a partner officially.. do you have any tips on how to bond babies and adults? If so, thank you!
I'm glad Saskia seems to be doing a little better! Zap is so adorable! I wish I could come for a spa day for my piggies, instead of struggling by myself 😂

Fabulous health check and a lovely bath . Super cute guinea pig . Ready for the guinea pig show. Love the collaboration fantastic team Saksia and Scotty.
What a handsome fella. He looks wonderful after his bath. I love all the colors of Zap's coat. Hope the urine problem is figured out. Great to know that CBD is in a different form than the cream(which I have).
I've gone to the paste, it's apple flavored and my crew will come all crimes for their tiny treat. As for the pocket liner, my old pig did get it without his needed fungal shampoo bath. Sir Philipp needed monthly baths, and gently wash his bum and pocket with antifungal shampoo. He needed a clean out frequently, but never had a liner.
How old is Zap? My guinea pig died around 6 years old, I hope that isn't too young or old, but I probably might've missed a lot of things about a guinea pig until know!
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue Saskia I thinks it’s a women thing we just figure it out, lol. My husband could never change a diaper he would gag instantly and I would roar with laughter. Great job to you both of and the piggie too. We have 5 SEVERELY abused shih tzu’s we rescued all paralyzed and in wheels and in diapers and he will do anything for those pups but the diapers he just can’t.
@@ScottysAnimals glad we don’t have smellavision it looked truly intense.I’m a medic and we carry Vicks sticks in our pockets for when we come across something stinky we quickly dab a little Vick to the nose, sometimes you will even see doctors carry Vicks.
I bathed one of my pigs for the first time in 4 years when I had an outbreak of lice. Her bath water was so clean I could have drank it 🤣 Keeping cages clean really helps.
I bathe my Guinea pigs once a month tbh I think if don’t bathe them at all there is a high chance your Guinea pig have an infection or flees and if you bathe them 2-4 times a year they might get flees. I think it’s good to bathe them often to make sure they stay healthy.
Just a quick fyi, your Amazon smile link in the description isn't a link. Like a blue one you can click on. If someone goes to the Amazon wishlist, they can find it, but I would hate for any donations to be missed because someone didn't want to type out the long url, especially since you can't highlight/copy out of the description box on mobile.
Love love loooove that you advocate for baths. It really helps! My pistachio who is a Peruvian really benefits from bath time. Thank you to Scotty for showing me what to buy and how to bathe her. She is a rescue and is bitchy when I wash her but at the end of the day, she doesn’t know how bad it would be without bathing!! Thank you guys. I am a Guinea pro because of you!!!! 😘♥️😘
The comments are full of Guinea pig fans...I'm just a fan of interesting videos. I can't get over her touching her hair and glasses after touching it's poop lol
If you dilute the desired amount of shampoo with a bit of water in a cup, it spreads more easily & evenly & doesn't leave spots of concentrated soap that are harder to wash out...This works for any conditioner you may be using, too... Combing or using a slicker brush while blowing dry speeds up the process & leaves the coat nicer...
“I like doing this” as Saskia uses her bare fingers to pull icky gunk out of the back end of a Guinea pig! I so get her! (But I would have to use gloves 😂😂😂)
I used to think I might want a ginue pig. Not so much after watching her reach into his bottom to remove a giant shit then play with his willy. Definitely not doing that. Too many people get animals then decide they don't want to provide the care they need.
I am not even a fan of guenea but I find it so amazing how devoted Saskia is to those animals and all the things she does to really teach pet owner how to treat their guinea pigs. Have been watching it several years
Saskia, I have a lavender balm that's amazing on you pressure points (temple, inside of wrist & behind the ear) very calming & relaxing and helps me fall asleep.
Yay! So happy to see you Saskia. I was so sad without you. And I know the piggy babies missed you. So now I have you on my big tablet. So there's more you. And the piggy babies to watch. Love you!😘💖🤗
No sorry, most books available are rife with inaccuracies and some really mind blowing ones. I even pointed out some very wrong info (proven) info in a book by a vet for veterinarians in a video. I think it is this one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-59414jpO-0I.html
It is getting cold in my region (south Asia) and one of my guinea pigs started shoeing signs of cold like runny nose and sneezing What could I do to let him stay warm?
I think the dog comparison with the bath was a good one; Zap’s fuzz looked more like a pup before his bath, but his fur looked more like a cat afterwards. I only have skinnies, so it’s neat to see the difference for their furry cousins!
I wish more than anything I could adopt two of those precious piggies! My allergies would land me in the hospital though. I found out when we got one for my son at a young age. I couldn't breathe. I adore the little babies!!!
I’ve really enjoyed watching this I used to have one many years ago and I never even new about them being able to bath and clip nails this channel is great if I ever get one again so pleased it popped up thanks 🙏🥰🥰🥰💕
