SPACE 1999 Eagle - Build Journal - Part 4 

As a big fan of Space 1999 especially the Eagle Transporter being my favorite part of the whole show, I can honestly say that what you did was truly amazing. The details and sounds are spot on. Incredible job my friend. It is probably the best I've ever seen.

For those interested in printed parts: The big problem with the door motor.. What I used is called a micro servo, it has the particularity of being demultiplied turning very slowly and providing enough strength. It is widely used in dynamic modeling but needs to be driven with a PWM (pulse-width modulation) digital signal which is normally provided by the receiver of a radio control, or by a customized electronic circuit, or by a microcontroller such as Arduino. There is no way to use it only with the power supply, which in this specific case is 5 volts. The alternative is to use a simple motor but generally they turn too fast and so need a gear, which makes them become too bulky. Finally there is the problem of stopping the doors when they have reached the maximum opening or closing. For this I used the copper flat wires that you see in the photo that close (short circuit) when the door has arrived, but you need a electronic circuit or an arduino to handle this signal. It is much simpler to use arduino than to build a special electronic circuit and it is also very cheap, an Arduino Nano clone can cost 3 euros if bought in China. In any case, you need a little knowledge of electronics. I can give you the printed part to open close the doors manually but to power them is more complicated, I should make a simplified arduino kit already assembled and welded for the door but it require a lot of time.. I'm sorry I'm not very helpful on that.

Excellent work there! When I watched the show I was annoyed and scared that there wasn't an airlock system in the ships, the door opened directly to space lol, so I think they made a mistake there...

I am definitely interested in your printed parts and a build tutorial on the doors. I'd love to be able to just have the Eagle lift off and inflight sounds without the music or alarms.

ma la scatola di montaggio che si vede nei primi secondi c'entra qualcosa con la costruzione? Magari hai preso da alcune parti per non doverle fare con la stampante 3D?

Osservando il tuo modello ho capito che la cabina di pilotaggio non ha assolutamente i vasti spazi sopra la testa dei piloti come si vede nel telefilm. E' solo una finzione scenica. Anche la profondita' tra vetro e fondo della cabina non torna assolutamente. Per rispettare le proprorzioni del modello, incolli i piloti al muro e hai gia' finito lo spazio!
