I attended this lecture. When it concluded my wife and I rushed outside of the theatre to get in front of the book-signing line because we had dinner reservations. ThereI were only 3 people in front of us. We were on line forever it seemed waiting for him as the Q&A took quite a while. We were joking how it was the longest Q&A ever! We ended up missing our reservation, but it was worth it. His lecture was great and we got good photos with him and our books signed. He is such a cool guy.

Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. Neil does not know BASIC science. Not only can't we have creation without God, Neil does not know that we also can't have science without God. The laws of nature can only come from a Lawgiver, God. Its troubling on days I find great works of public speaking or educational works above my understanding that I am not smart enough to have contributed in any way. Yet I am thankful that I am atleast bright enough to follow along somewhat and try to understand a little more after listening than before I had found it. I wish the American people would listen. We’re the ones who voted them in. My own family doesn’t even understand it. And that’s not the sad part. I’m a physics major (with a fascination for astronomy) and yet they feel my intellect would be more useful for some other major.

Pretty much exactly what I'm doing right now haha. I've been falling asleep to Cosmos every night and dreaming of mathematics. It's never to late to learn as they say. I'd recommend the Khan Academy online too for maths videos. It's helped me anyway. Good to know there are other late bloomers out there :P
I was in the Air Force, working for American Forces Radio/TV in July, 1969. Here's the way our News Agency led the cover story on the Apollo 11 landing: "A mixed military & civilian crew in an unarmed craft established a temporary U.S. base on the moon this week." Fast forward to today: do you really think we'd be advancing our rocket technologies if not for GPS and other military applications? As always, Neil is right. The guy knows his stuff.

How can you not love this man, he seems so easy to talk to and knowledgeable. Most people in his field are very smart yet really awkward which isn't a bad thing but I just love listening to him talk.

I disagree. Neil Degrasse's trademark has always been honesty, sometime even blunt honesty. I don't believe that would be a good thing for him nor for humanity if one of its brilliant mind had to become a professional PR bullshitter salesman.

I'm excited about the future of space travel. There is talk of travelling to stars. Some stars are so far away it would take millions of years to get there at 24,790 miles per hour, which is the fastest speed humans have ever travelled.

15:00 Neil hits the nail on the head. The only great leaps for Mankind happen when they are A: At War and trying to survive or B: At risk of annihilation or embarrassment. Taking this logic we can extrapolate that Man will most likely never reach Mars unless there is an impending war that necessitates us to make the journey or another nation plans to do so ahead of us and it is in our best interest to beat them to it (compelled to do it). I guess the whole principle of technology is to create devices that make tasks easier to do because they are tasks we wouldn't be able to complete otherwise...and this goes back to our early primitive nature that early man as apes started using tools to make the task of opening coconuts and nuts etc much easier. So...we only do stuff that we are COMPELLED to do, 'war' and 'threat to existence' are generally seen to be quite compelling.

And when I tell a dog to fetch something it does not seem to mind that it takes about 5,8 milliseconds for the sound to reach him when he's 2 meters away, if I live a million years longer, and so does the dog, we could be a million times further away and spend equally little of our life waiting for an answer. That would be 2 million meters away, which would take the sound about 1,6 hours to travel. more time = more patience. :P
I put this on to fall asleep. Two hours later I got to sleep. A half hour after that it was my normal get up to pee time. As Neal would say,”sooooo” don’t put this on to be bored to sleep.
A note on sound quality - there are 2 types of mixers, ones aimed at public address for live venues and ones aimed at recording - some do both well, most don't. So the sound is just lower level and is an artifact from a mixer aimed for PA not recording. Getting good level for audience AND recording is difficult and post production (adding gain for more volume will likely cause distortion when things like the mic is moved and is quicker to release with lower volume sans distortion.
I have watched nearly all his speeches in youtube. He always mentions that Americans stopped dreaming and exploring. What about the shuttle missions? Even though they were part of space exploitation than exploration, those missions proved to be very beneficial for humans and for understanding space.
Dr. Tyson makes a good point about the motivations of a society to explore. Maybe human space exploration is not for a government to do, especially given the short sighted perspective of most, if not all of them. Given enough money, which they have plenty of, and enough time, the private sector can, and will, do it all. Money is a great incentive! Another point that he makes, that needs repeating, is the fact that the entire budget for NASA is only 0.5 percent of the US national budget. Only one half of a single penny comes out of every dollar you give, (or they take) to the government for taxes! I would defy anyone to argue that everything NASA has accomplished and does accomplish is not worth that small expense. Given all that we now have (Including the technology I am using to write this.) because of the space program and the science that comes from it, I really can't think of any better use of my tax money.
This is such a great presentation. I've watched many similar scientific presentations and debates in the last few months. Why is the sound quality always so terrible? It's either barely audible or just plain poor.
I’m so excited That you writing a book with fully understanding of science, the humans at the spaces, can be compared, with humans at the deep oassions, which the environments and circumstances, almost very close together, and after few hours, our body’s reactions, in both environments does the same effects when you, exit from those circumstances, likes stiffness, and pressure, and the breathing system is by oxygen capsules, and also you doesn’t feel your body’s weight, at both environments, The reasons I’m here and still challenging, because I really cared about USA , otherwise , if I just care about myself, I could do my researching anywhere in the world, and by now I enjoyed my life, at the environment that I loved,

His point about changing and speaking directly to the people instead of the politicians was truly eye opening for me. Kinda makes me realize that both Democrats AND Republicans are totally lacking because the people don't demand more of them (deGrasse de-politicizes the thought process of how/who is best to reinvigorate America)!

Dr. Tyson is spot on about creating a mission and reinvigorating NASA. Dr. Tyson,.....would it be a bridge too far to have a box to check on our 1040s to contribute to NASA instead of the Presidential Election activities ? People would do it every year.....You pay no more taxes, but that little check......directs the government to fund this important dream maker.
@@albertfermi9278 Just because it’s in a book doesn’t mean it’s factually based. Too many people living in a fantasy world these days. It’s why the economy has gone to shit. They’ll spend trillions believing they can explore space, but won’t spend a single penny to help the homeless, help cure cancer, help fund programs for free diabetic supplies etc. We live in a society where transgender vegans won’t eat meat because it’s inhuman, but will have an abortion because it’s “they’re” right 🙄
