I'm on the fence between "wait and see " and "shut up and take my money!" I'm very satisfied with the value I've received from Keen and Space Engineers. Unless SE2 ends up being uncharacteristically expensive, I'll likey jump at the chance if/when it eventually arrives.

I honestly doubt it will be priced at, say, modern FPS games (70+ USD) Then again I have 4k hours in SE1 so once reviews come in and it's at least a functional game, I would be willing to pay it.

@valeon7303 Agreed. Keen's model thus far has been to keep the base game very affordable, while supplying a semi-steady stream of mostly-cosmetic add-ons to anyone who wants to throw a few more dollars their way. I've been very happy with it.

I think a lot of people forget that space engineers has been around since 2013, the technology to do all the insane things that everyone wants in 2024 didn't exist then and expecting them to wring it out of a decade old product is pure insanity, especially when it comes to criticism of developing the new technologies that would actually allow them to do what's being asked for. I spent £30 to buy space engineers and have 2000 hours on it between large servers, single player, creative and a 5-10 player PvE server I've hosted over the last year. I don't think I really have any other games from which I've gotten that kind of value for money except maybe minecraft Java which I bought for £15 fairly early on (though I don't have hours for that it's probably similar)

It was a buggy mess from the start. Literally built off their previous game it was way too ambitious for what the studio is capable of. It did become more than I would have expected but still so far from anything but a glitchy sandbox. I bought it, and dlc and overall not dissatisfied but I wouldn't buy SE2 for more than $10

A simple campaign would be nice. - You are travelling to X planet to work, fresh from the space engineer academy and something goes wrong. - your ship crashes on another planet, an AI guides you to survive. - Grand objective: go to your original destination. - Now the AI gives you objectives all coming toward that goal. Build a rover of at least xxx psu, build a refinery outpost, find a specific mineral, set a comms station at x coordinates, build a ship that can get to space and return - For storys sake we could have certain events, like, to get coordinates for the next lo action, you have to find and explore an abandoned outpost. Or to unlock a certain technology. - and this goes and goes covering all existing features and technologies. Mine on planets, break into space, re entry, space mining, trading, combat and finally long distance jumps. We could have space pirates part of the story, being an obstacle. Or use the spiders for a little horror. It would be just a list of objectives that pump our problem solving skills. The little campaign would end with you and a modest sized ship jumping and arriving to your original destination.

I enjoyed playing with Progression Resources mod that kinda puts a story into the game, because you need to go through a certain progression. To me SE, Empyrion and 7dtd fall into a category of games that require mods to be a full, playable game. I find that wholly unacceptable. Sure mods are easy to get, but I can't recommend a game to a friend if I have to send them a list of the mods they need to run to have an enjoyable experience. I'm not sure if you'll call that "hating" but until the vanilla version is more than a laggy framework of a game, I consider it trash.

really dont mind them doing SE2 and "abandoning SE1. For the long run its good that the game gets a well deserved sequel. its going to be fine as long as most of the core features from SE1 is transferred to SE2. It is complete in the sense that it has a reasonably rounded set of features. Some bugs still need fixing (Klang begone). And there is a near unlimited number of additional blocks and tools that would just be nice to have. Here I think Keen should adopt some of the better mods. Perhaps hire Digi ;-) Another thing I noticed was at 1:30. In the text it say "...as shallow as 1 water cell (1m thick)." I would greatly welcome it if this means the (large) grid switches to 1m block size. I guess this would also mean starting over with the graphics design, but it would be worth it. Overall, SE2 would be the first game I buy in early access.

You make some really good points about players' expectations and frustrations with SE performance, in larger battles etc. I'll always reiterate that this is an expectation management problem. By giving the players too much access to the game engine, Keen have actually negatively reframed their game to look worse than it is. While I too have built my share of 100K+ PCU ships (including a 1:1 scale model of the Kushan Homeworld mothership), I realize that what Keen have done is give us a game where they explicitly take off the engine limiters if we opt for experimental mode. If this were a tightly controlled experience on rails, like what you'd typically get from any AAA game, there would be NO experimental mode option. Presto, no room to complain about engine limits. AAA studios know that they only have X amount of system resource bandwidth, so they usually prioritize a good player experience by heavily restricting what the player can see and experience -- in effect, we are never allowed to see the man behind the curtain, performance-wise. AAA studios have positively framed these controlled, limited player experiences as being the best that a player can get to see. But b/c here we get to see the actual limits of the SE / VRAGE2 engine, people are complaining about being given too much freedom to push (or break) the limits of the engine. This is the kind of thing that passionate nerds do -- throwing the doors wide open for everyone to run in and be free to misinterpret what they experience in whatever way they want. Just follow Keen's own server PCU limits, instead of trying to shoehorn an elephant into a corset. Or for specific tournament events, maybe use an even tighter PCU limit if you want to prioritize performance. There are plenty of specific exceptions to this, like your example of too many H2 thrusters in one place. I'd love to see and somewhat expect that with an additional 10 years' experience on Keen's side and 10 years of hardware/software advancement in general, a hypothetical SE2 would be better able to handle that kind of thing gracefully. Maybe 100K PCU per player, instead of only 25K PCU (or as I'm personally hoping for, a more dynamic method of allocating PCU-type resources). Or being able to handle 500 H2 thruster conveyor connections and fuel updates in a scene, instead of only 100 or whatever. But without willingness and acceptance on the part of the players to work within the then-current limits of whatever game engine, we'll STILL end up with players in 2050 complaining about how terrible VRAGE4 is for SE3 and how come they can't build a 1:1 scale replica of Coruscant with Star Citizen style surface to orbit seamless transitions? Game simulations will ALWAYS be more limited than players' imaginations, and figuring out how to creatively work within the available limits has to be a part of the creative process instead of wishing for tomorrow's processing bandwidth today. Within the current limits of SE, I see so many ship designs that slap dozens of small thrusters all over (and that often use dozens of high-PCU blocks for purely cosmetic greebling), and I place the blame squarely on lazy player builds and blindly following the rule of cool. To mitigate the known shortcomings of the current engine, if only there were something larger, more powerful, that could consolidate the performance of say every 5 or 6 small thrusters? Hmm, how about a LARGE H2 thruster? Either work within the limits of using fewer but larger thrusters (greebling them to fit them into a design's aesthetics), or else build a smaller, lighter ship that doesn't need as much thrust and can use only small thrusters. There are a good number of smart, low-PCU ship examples on the workshop that cleverly use 1-PCU blocks for greebling for some great looks, style, gameplay, as well as relatively light performance impact. The empty world problem is separate, and I would love to see Keen put more effort into using their scenario builder tools to flesh out more complete game worlds or modes with entire solar system-spanning campaigns or open world exploration. I realize that an SE open world with POIs and NPCs/ships to interact with would have to pretty aggressively spawn/despawn grids around the player. The more stuff around the player to make the world feel alive, the more aggressive the grid control would have to be -- like how GTA will de/spawn anything outside of the player's field of view and outside a certain very tight radius.

I've got north of 2500 hrs in this game for like $70 USD (maybe?). Keen can have my money whenever they are ready. I don't ever expect a finished product in a game like this. I really like the way you put it, so I'll just drop my version of the same perspective. Space Engineers 1 is like a Lego box without any instructions, nothing to lead the player into playing it. It's sort of just a creativity dump for the players. I hope Space Engineers 2 will be like a Lego box but with a manual, something that gives the player an incentive the players to actually spend time on the game. I find myself way too often on Space Engineers 1 just kinda building a project and then dumping it because my creativity runs out, and I don't play it for like a week.

I think the water simulation is not really worth the hassle. I mean as cool as it sounds there are just a couple of game engines where they do it right and it is always very performance costly. In game of such a scope as Space Engineers I don't think it will add up that much. Fluids in sandbox games are probably the hardest thing to do in my opinion and only focusing on that would eat up a budget for a whole AAA game. And let's be honest - performance should be their main focus as it takes away a lot of gameplay possibilities from the current game (having to be so strict on PCU etc, or even the hydrogen engine stuff mentioned in the video) Also toning down the clang would be nice :) And as long as it gets some graphical upgrades I would be happy just with this.

I love the idea of water, and all, but there is no way in hell fluid dynamics is going to work without the game having massive performance issues. The calculations required are insane for it to work well, even single player. Technology may be improving, but not at that scale yet. To even consider the calculations even roughly worth including, the rest of the graphics would have to take a significant hit. We are talking about a game that already has performance issues for crashing into things, and definitely getting the calculations very wrong.

For me, I tend to be a little skeptical of feature creep. I've always been a bit miserly when it comes to my PC-buying, and what I'm running on currently has gotten to the point of not running SE terribly well. As such, I was rather excited at the announcement of V-Rage 3, since a purpose-built game engine should be miles ahead in terms of performance. Where I start getting skeptical is when they start adding destructible pieces to blocks, and water physics, which are great in theory, but might end up requiring a beefier computer than what is needed currently. My SE2 wish-list is more along the lines of sorting out clang, being able to have off-angle parts on a ship that don't mess with thrust, and having a build-grid that lets you have pieces that are a half-block offset from each other. Not that I don't like eye candy, but for me, increased functionality is the best kind of form.

I'm not disappointed in SE1 its taken them a long time to develop the game, and I personally assume that all features in SE1 will eventually make a return in SE2 given the fact that they could likely just copy most of their own homework. SE1 will be in my mind feature complete as they've teased the idea of a proper GOAL coming to the game in the next year as they've been working heavily on AI and teasing a new class of blocks I have a feeling SE2 is going to be what SE1 took years to be, and more. Definitely going to try SE2 (assuming no MAJOR issues are unveiled) its an extremely interesting product as its taken a focus on being as physically accurate as it possibly can. I think SE2 is going to be one of my favorite Sci-Fi games. Obviously I'm holding my hopes high for this title but thats because from a development standpoint they could absolutely pull it off. The only issue being if they take the greedy route and try to hold features for ransom as DLC.

I will totally buy a new Space Engineers. Sure, it will be sad to see it go not matter how Keen handles the transition. But after all those years, our former space ship crash simulator has gone as far as its engine will take it (just saying: ropes...) And what if it isnt really an end? What if they were to release it more as a 2.0, a big 202x revamp of the same game, like big non-gaming software tends to do? Maybe even let us import our blueprints and worlds?
@MyLPMaster001

Space engineers (1) is at the height of what is possible with it and the reason is simply that the engine is already stretched to its furthest. There is simply a point where it is not cost effective anymore to improve an engine, especially because it will always have a lot of legacy costs. Some things the engine does are simply not compatible with more modern technologies and rewriting it piece by piece will take longer and therefore cost more than just building it up from the ground. This way, you can even get rid of some longer running bugs that are simply too deep inside the engine to fix anymore. Therefore, I really support them building a new engine, to make a possible SE2 with it. Also, SE is feature complete for years now. They did everything they promised and more. That they further improve the game at all shows how dedicated they are to their game and the community. They don't have to and do it anyways (probably because they didn't have anything else for many years [let's ignore Medival engineers], but that doesn't deminish their work)

tbh, as someone who is unable to afford high quality (or even medium quality) gaming setups, my only hope for space engineers 2 is that it will run better than the first game. I enjoy playing space engineers, but it is quite laggy + low fps on my pc. So if they get a new version that can run more efficiently, that is all I need to be happy.

Space Engineers is full of great ways to creatively solve problems and create interesting means of transportation, but unfortunately there are hardly any interesting problems or destinations that make sense to go to. There are many interesting ways to mine and it's worth going into space for platinum. But that's about it. For me, this game is always something that I can't wait to play and create, but then I always get bored because it's so-so empty.

SPACE Engineers. Planets are kinda cool, but I've been against them from the very beginning. Instead of a great space-based game, we got a clunky one, with clunky planets. (And Medieval Engineers, lets' not forget). I'd rather they go back focusing on space, buildings ships, bases, mining asteroids, discovering wrecks..etc. All that more refined.

My biggest fears/issues/hopes with SE2 are... -A Lack of substance, a reason to fight forward, to survive, to construct different vehicles/machines. (We need an END GOAL! I think there NEEDS to be a Subnautica-esque "knocked off course, stranded on alien planet" type of story with an ending of either success or failure at getting back to your home system.) -A lack of things to fight, shooting ships is boring. We need PROPER NPC's, maybe some of them could be voice acted? We need enemy ground assaults on player bases/vehicles. (And maybe like... Code it so that they don't cause massive performance issues like they do in SE1??? Idk, I can't have more than a few enemies in my game at a time, no matter the planet, without it causing major performance issues.) -More multiplayer friendly performance. DESPERATELY wish to see a performance upgrade on that end of things. -GET RID OF WEIRD ENGINE ISSUES THAT CAUSE KLANG. It's POSSIBLE. There are HUNDREDS of games doing it now, shit, even in Minecraft you can make incredible machines with mods like Aeronautics. Just PLEASE work on the engine a shitload before AND after release. -We need. Some DAMN. VARIETY. We need a diverse planet, not just in life forms, but in biomes. I'm talkin' Tundra. Taiga. Temperate Deciduous Forest. Tropical Rainforest. Grassland. Savanna. Desert. Chaparral. Marine. Freshwater. Coral Reef. Estuary. Mangrove Forest. Polar Ice. Mountain. Cave. Bog. Oasis. Flooded Forest. Lava Field. Salt Marsh. Fen. Limestone Pavement. Oxbow Lake. Vernal Pool. Lagoon. Salt Flat. Hot Spring. Volcanic Crater. Sand Dune. Glacial Moraine. Thermal Vent. Rift Valley. Peatland. Alvar. Thermokarst. Carolina Bay. Karst. Mire. Fumarole. Subterranean. Sinter Terrace. Ice Shelf. abyssal Plain. (Maybe not ALLLLL of them, but like... AT LEAST a dozen with more added in-post release updates.)

I mean ofc I wish SE1 had some more features (who doesn't) but looking at it realistically I bought the game for 20 or 25€ back in the day and about the same in DLCs. I got over 1500h out of it which outside of MMOs is probably moer than any other game I've played. You can't really expect any more value than that. At some point updating SE1 indefinitely instead of making SE2 also doesn't make technical sense (even ignoring financial sense). A lot of the stuff in SE1 is really dated by now and I look forward to a complete overhaul in the form of a SE2.

I see Space Engineers as A Sandbox Demo and Proof of concept. Scenarios have been added, Modding tools provided, players have created blocks, ships, scripts and even whole scenarios.. Now the devs know what players want and can only Improve with SE2... water will be a great addition, will liquid water, maybe addition of oil or even gasses might be possible.. I sit on the fence of, keen gave SE but took away ME (MediEvil Engineers) So they better Provide SE2 with improvements. :)

I don't see how anyone can complain about Space Engineers not being a mature, completed game. They can't make huge sweeping changes now anyway without breaking lots of mods, so probably better that they move on and make a sequel anyway; better than farming us for endless DLCs. Also, I guarantee you that very few of these people complaining about SE being 'abandoned', complained when Keen actually abandoned Medieval Engineers.

All we got so far is photoshopped SE1 ships over shotty rendered landscapes, jello water, crash physics that honestly don't look much better than SE1, and prototype water physics simulation animation that could have nothing to do with anything. All this from a developer whose solution to lag was block limits, speedlimits that are down right laughable in terms of space travel, and player limits that would make Frank Drake blush. Bit early to start the hype train. I'll be in camp skepticism for the time being. I am curious where they plan to get funding for ~5years of development though, Don't think even SE1 DLCed to hell and back could fit that bill. Fingers crossed Microsoft shot them a nice fat check when they released on xbox. 🤞

Why would any sane person hate on SpaceEngineers and KeenSH? We've gotten _free_ updates for years, long after it left early access. We had no right to any updates or content and we still got it. Plus optional DLCs. They could kill SE tomorrow and announce SE2, and there would be no reason to hate them. Anyone who does still hate them for this is clearly not a rationally thinking person and must be disregarded. There may be things you can criticize them for, but not that. That's not even a discussion topic. Don't try to make it one.

I'm hopeful, but not *super* optimistic about it. Don't get me wrong, all this is cool, but... it kinda seems too good to be true. I'm really worried about performance (for all I know they could be running on an absolute monster of a rig or speeding up laggy footage) with all the stuff they're doing, especially the water physics and fact the world is still destructible (a lot of the standard optimization tricks that let games get away with looking that good are a lot harder to get working if your geometry isn't fixed, and fluid sims aren't generally the easiest on computers). And then probably even moreso than the performance question, there's the question of will it even happen, or will it all just fizzle out leaving us all wondering what could have been? Sure a lot of work has clearly been done, but, there's still a lot left, and they've never even said a thing about there actually being a new SE game, we're all just guessing from their choice of testing environment, and I definitely remember way back in the day the posts about their AI crewmembers and stuff that never came to be

I would rather see so many improvements to space engineers besides water stuff. I really couldn't care less how realistic the water is. It's space engineers, not plumbing simulator. I'm not trying to be a jerk about it, but seriously, think about it. I love space engineers even though all the water is ice. An improvement to it looking like liquid would be just fine. Playing around with water physics is limited in it's gameplay use. I would prefer easier user created enemies and scenarios, and sub grids that actually work right.

My complaint with Keen as an IT expert is that they are simply not capable of delivering a good game. Much of the code they write is just garbage, and they are so bad at creating compelling ingame content that they decided to not even have it. Therefore I have little faith in them ever being able to make a game that actually runs smooth, or has compelling content. I really wish they could pull that off, because I generally like the game, but they just lack the competence to do it.

I would love to see major improvements with performance, and I would also live to see more AI work. For example, I would love to have AI units that can be on our ships as characters. There are a couple of mods that are starting to emulate this now, woth varying degrees of success, however if it was a base part of the game it would make is much easier for us to implement modified versions of it.

I used to be on the Keen hater bandwagon. BUT they came back and focused on the and fixed all the issues I had at the time, added more stuff to the game and made it much better over all. For me it is a finished game, that ended up going way beyond its scope and what its game engine can handle. There isnt much they can do to fix the current issues on the current game engine. When SC2 comes out if its not priced stupidly like too many games are these days I will buy it.

Since making a wishlist seems to be the trend for comments on these videos, all of these VRage3 video's look really cool, but what i really want is: - More grid sizes & the ability to combine them without needing hinges/rotors/whatever - Structural integrity like we had in 'ME' (at the very least for bases on planets, but everywhere would be really cool) - A better attempt at a campaign/goals/PVE (read: give me something to do) & better performance in multiplayer - A lot more 'decorative' stuff that doesn't require me buying DLC's (honestly just make at least half of current DLC's part of the base game in SE2)

What if they simply choose to upgrade the engine of the current SE and continue from that… there is two other games in my inventory that also do just that. They simply don’t go to version 2 but enhance the current version with a new and better engine and remain solid as the original. Hey! Congratulations! Honestly. Space Engineers is a great and very different game. It depends only on what you do with it. It won't hold your hand while you're trying to grasp how things work. Inspiration must be generated by you. It's a journey if you like. And only if you choose. I have been playing for around 4 years now I think and I'm still playing my first survival playthrough... and I haven't even been to all the planets and moons yet. I still remember leaving Earthlike for the first time after my first years in SE... It was scary but thrilling, because I my goal is not to return to Earthlike until I have established a Facility on every Planet and moon. At the moment I am building an Asteroid Mining Station exactly between Earthlike and Mars to also establish a synchronized Laser Antenna Network. May Clang have mercy on you, fellow Space Engineer. If anything the next game will be even more complicated and more can be thrown into the face of the engineer than ever before. The idea should not be to make the game easier The idea of the game is to engineer your way out of the situation that you end up finding yourself into. If I wanted to play a game where things were easier I would go play a mobile game where things are practically handed to you... And then you got to think of the fact if they're going to be making the game easier which could essentially turn it into any other game that you see these days how much crappier will the game get when they just only start selling you the engineer pass... Yeah definitely not looking forward to anything like that if they change anything of the core gameplay I will not be getting SE2.

While it's obvious that Space Engineers never became what it should have, it's also obvious that Keen have been working on an engine that isn't capable of supporting their ambitions for upwards of 10 years. They've needed this engine upgrade for a long time. While it's understandable that players would be hesitant to buy another product when the previous one isn't finished, it's also obvious that Keen need the money to continue existing as a company. It's the same with their DLC, which I think they've been fairly reasonable about releasing. I think they've done the best they can in terms of respecting the playerbase without committing monetary suicide. At the end of the day, I'm hesitant not because of the money, but because Keen have demonstrated they have no idea what to do in terms of gameplay.
