Here's my take on Destroyer Usage in Space Engineers
Tactics, what makes a good destroyer, what makes a bad destroyers etc.

From what I remember, destroyers were developed to deal with torpedo boats, then became the thing that they were meant to stop, becoming torpedo boats.

yeah, obviously IRL strategies have more nuance that I don't get into here. But when I balanced the ships at the start, I balanced them with the end goal of mirror WWII/WWI era naval strategies. I think it's cool that the faction took them so well (and didn't break them to hard either).

The tactics you described remind me strongly of WW2 Naval tactics. I'm loving it. And your block limits for each class of vessel.

Very good video. You might be able to get a weapon that performs a similar function to the torpedo by allowing the destroyers to mount a short range type of "FOB" high calibre gun, possibly balanced by low ammunition count or long reload times. This would give destroyers a genuine capital ship killing weapon like the torpedo without them turning into long range artillery pieces

yep, we've considered that. And the CDF faction is testing exactly that (both viability) and if it's overpowered. So far they've only fielded vs capital centric fleets. and the results seem to point to it being a bit strong. But there was no escort so we'll see

@@GetBrocked Interesting to hear. Thinking about it, it might not be a bad thing to not have a direct torpedo analogue. Often the presence of torpedo armed craft discouraged commanders from committing their capital ships for fear of losing them cheaply. That sort of very cautious thinking might not create the sort of experience you want and have so far got through the series. Everyone wants to have battleships fight, not run away from destroyers.

Is there any place for small grid ships in these kind of engagements? With shields, I'd assume not... The only combat I've really done is with vanilla blocks vs enhanced NPCs (e.g. reavers) but in those situations 2-3 heavily armed and mobile fighters can take out a good number of enemy guns or thrusters.

we don't actually use shields with the exception of a single ship. Small ships have their place, but more so as scouting, and forward observation for the heavy capitals. The fighters also fight other fights occasionally. In set encounters they're also used as transport for troops. We're in the process of testing the carrier concept, but so far it's just kinda been a man power intensive, laggy mess.

My ship would be a cruiser? But it's all missles not sure if you got modded weapon batteries I just use vanilla SE

Do flak/anti-missile turrets work well with this weapon mod and the typical amount of incoming fire? I ask because the Rider doctrine seems like it might benefit from a specialized heavy destroyer, with double light armor and sacrificing the standard armament for complete anti-missile guns. Like the Imperial Lancer in Star Wars (old school legends stuff). It is intended solely as anti-fighter support and has no turbolasers. It would limit available options, but provide specific defense for their most important vessels against the most common and dangerous type of enemy fire. Also, thanks again for making these!

We sorta have that atm in a way. The outlander (rider), Viminal (cdf) is a missile destroyer and has less anti small ship And the Aventine is a much more well rounded vessel and functions as a anti small DD Sadly beyond that turrets atm keens turret ai is sucking. And until they revert or fix. Pd is terrible and not very effective. maybe 1/10 missiles will get intercepted.

@@GetBrocked I’ve heard about a few good PDC scripts. Maybe try that as exclusive to larger ships? Maybe have it be a choice between the weapon slaving script to enhance main battery or a PDC script to enhance the defensive weapons?

Game mimic real life. Strategy comes from experience and for this people to use the same strategy speak volume about how effective and common the strategy is.
