This reminds me of "Predictive learning as a network mechanism for extracting low-dimensional latent space representations" (bioRxiv 471987). It seems that systems which learn to predict their own inputs tend to form these latent representations of their inputs. I'm of the mind that we're only years away from making proper thinking machines that don't rely on a static backpropagation-trained network to generate behavior, but are instead learning to perceive the world and themselves in it and behaviors, adapting to evolving circumstances. Exciting times!
