I worked at a remote oil field site in the arctic circle of Alaska above Prudehoe bay where there was absolutely no light pollution and nothing around. on a clear night when the temps where in the low low low negatives you could stare off into the sky and it would be so clear for a few moments you would almost feel like you where just floating around in space. The stars are so bright and on the nights the northern lights are out the whole sky would fill with the crazy dancing colors. Even growing up in Alaska its the only place I've seen them that intense.

I was in the Air Force. Stationed at Malmstrom Montana. I was apart of the nuclear security team. So our post area was wide spread around Malmstrom. Some post Hours away from base. Anyway there were plenty of spots with zero light pollution. You could see everything in the sky. Even one night the full moon lit up the sky so bright we could toss a football around around midnight haha. I fucking miss it. Now I'm living back in Massachusetts. In the middle of Providence and Worcester and I can see nothing at night where I live. Really bums me out.

Dude, you're 100% correct. I spent some time in the rural Pacific Northwest and went camping during a summer. The night sky looked like a movie. Stars as bright as anything I've ever seen, falling stars (meteors) every couple of minutes and constellation patterns that you could draw with your finger. It was amazing and when you laid on your back, all you could see was the sky which made it feel like you were flying in space. Will never forget that experience.

Careful though, the Rogan is full of bro science. He's got a great head on his shoulders, doesn't dick around with life choices but he still tends to lean heavily towards his bias. We all do. I will give him this, over the last few years he's really opened his mind to anything, not just his own beliefs. I've been fortunate enough to get to watch two slow traveling meteorites crawl across the sky for about 10-15 seconds each. One was red and had a huge long tail I saw overhead when I was taking the trash to the curb and the other was bright emerald green falling straight down to the horizon in front of me when I was driving. Beautiful! Otherworldly. I also got to see an incredibly bright white one explode but it was quick. It was coming straight down and it just looked like a star that was getting bigger and brighter until it shot off to the side and busted into pieces.

I think it's fascinating that evolution has programmed our brain to perceive time in a way that is hardwired to make our lives functional. The fact that we can understand that we have a finite amount of years on this Earth has allowed us to problem solve and to preserve and pass on knowledge, that when combined has yielded us as humans some incredible progress in a relatively short amount of time. I mean just in the last couple centuries since mainstream science has become widely accepted and consequently produced the industrial revolution. Just mind boggling how far we as a species have come since we left the cave a pretty short time ago when compared to the history of our little planet.

You can't even see most of the stars. The most common type is a "red dwarf", and they are invisible to the human eye and most telescopes. And they can have planets too. Yeah it's crazy how massive the universe is and how much of an insignificant speck our entire solar system really is.

Scientist say that the asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs was the size of Mt Everest. Traveling at 6 miles per second. The kinetic impact wiped out 1/2 the planet with 20 min. Imagine that. That is scary and incredibly fascinating at the same time.

I have a question for you joe ( love your podcast) but I seen a lot of your pod saying how we have all these debris in space we can say that the only thing we can benefit is that hopefully the debris can help stop some of these meteors and also help clean it up. I would love for you to ask a scientist and see their thoughts on it.

Back in the early 80s, there was an anecdote going around that went something like this...”in the factory of the future, there will be a man, a dog and a computer.... the computer will control the factory, the man will be there to care for the dog... and the dog will be there to ensure the man does not interfere with the computer...”... or something to this affect.... insightful even back then

To be a bit of a scientific pain in the ass, technically when a meteor hits the earth, it's a meteorite.

@@markmirabella4066 A meteor is the flash of light caused by a piece of interplanetary garbage entering the atmosphere. A meteoroid is any debris/garbage smaller than 1km in diameter.
