0:00-5:24 A 25-year overview of Space Jam's Sequel Development
5:24 Space Jam: A New Legacy Review
After 25 years total since the idea of a Space Jam sequel first arose, Space Jam: A New Legacy has finally released and I just had to talk about it in a new FULL Toonland Inquirer episode, rather than a Minivid! Turns out a two-hour commercial gave me a lot more to talk about than anticipated.

Great vid! Yeah, this about sums up my feelings for the film as well. I was 26 when the first Space Jam came out, so I don't have the nostalgic fondness most folks have for it. I actually found the Looney Tunes in the first movie to be somewhat autonomous and interchangeable, with a few standout lines from Bugs and Daffy, so this 'franchise (?)' could only go up from there. This one? Yes, it was a bloated 2-hour commercial with product placement coming out the wazoo, buuuuuuuut as a Looney Tunes fan and a fan of WB owned cartoons in general, I got enough fun WB/Looney Tunes stuff to give this one a marginal pass, with a few notable exceptions. VERY good point on the Looney Tunes' portrayals: while I have nothing but respect for Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng, seeing the characters go back to their 50's incarnations after 2 shows of them being more reminiscent of their 40's selves (which I prefer overall) was a bit of a letdown; I kept finding myself thinking about how much more awesome this would've been if we had gotten screwball 40's Daffy and funny Looney Tunes Show Lola here. (Sidebar about Lola: Kath Soucie who voiced Lola in the original Space Jam as well as her 3 appearances on New Looney Tunes recorded some voice work on New Legacy before they replaced her with Zendaya because celebrity pull.) Was it just me, or did the act 1 plot of reuniting the Tunes after they've gone off into other WB franchises and the LeBron James basketball plot almost seem like they could've been 2 separate movies? The whole "Dude, we're getting the band back together" sequence was basically just Warner saying "Look at all the cool stuff we own!", but dang if that wasn't my favorite part of the whole movie (Daffy and Lola's portrayals aside, plus it bugged me how we didn't get to see which planet they found Gossamer on; my guess is that maybe that got cut for time. A companion graphic novel depicted Gossamer having gone to Scooby-Doo; I kind of want to see that now. Maybe as bonus footage in the Blu-Ray.) One character whose portrayal pleasantly surprised me was Granny; they cranked her usual spunk up to 11, giving her some actual jokes and making her kind of gonzo, and I enjoyed the heck out of it. I hope we get to see more of this version of Granny in future Looney Tunes projects.

Thanks! Also great point about Granny, now I wish I mentioned that actually! Her character was toned up for sure here, definitely makes up for turning Lola dull again...Still a shame though this movie deliberately disregarded the idea that Lola Bunny can be looney.

@@TheToonkeeper Seriously, the blueprint for Lola was right there. The Looney Tunes Show and New Looney Tunes weren't that long ago. How soon did the studio forget?
