Fun fackt, Luxemburg used to supply iron to Europe, but when the mine in Kiruna, Sweden opened they could not compete with the high quality iron ore from that mine, so they had to basically reinvent it economy. I guess old grudges never die.

There are no new elements which haven't already been discovered, and it is far easier and cheaper to mine your rare earths, which really aren't all that rare, here on Earth. Even light can't reach the nearest star, Alpha proxima, in no time. It takes more than four years.

I'm far more excited about colonisation of our own solar system than I am about all the wonders telescopes show us that are out of grasp today. We are on the cusp of being able to live and prosper in space beyond our wildest dreams - Right here in our own cosmic back yard. What can we do around other stars? Nothing. We can't even conceive of reaching them in practical time frames yet. We can do something here though. Expand the horizons of humanity like never before. The first space ship that will reach another star with people onboard will be made in space in any case. Not here on Earth. And that space ship design/technology will be achieved because of many logistical and technical problems that would have already been solved by inhabitants of the solar system beyond Earth.
@LolUGotBusted
@LolUGotBusted 2 года назад
You can still be excited about JWST., just like I am excited for Mars. I fear there are hard lessons left to learn but we must face these challenges head-on. New developments in warp technology (this month!) may bring the stars closer to us than ever before.
@WWeronko
@WWeronko 2 года назад
Other stars is a bit premature. Let us focus with bases on the Moon and lunar resource exploitation. Asteroid mining and colonies on Mars and beyond follows. After we settle and utilize solar system resources we can ponder going to other stars.
@joeblack4436
@joeblack4436 2 года назад
Yeah. It's not only the pragmatic course, but the only viable one. I think the chances of starting with interstellar colonisation successfully before even developing habitation tech locally is next to zero. Might be able to capture a small slow rotating asteroid. A craft that can slowly span out a metal band to either side of it. Metal banding like what hold items on pallets. Then it would look like a large ring off to either side of it. Then after it achieves a geo synchronous orbit it can fold down and around the asteroid it's ring wings. That would secure the craft to the asteroid. Another craft sent there can dock to the craft to be used as propulsion. Once secured it could be brought into orbit of the moon or Earth. The bands around the asteroid could be followed with another vehicle to create a track around the asteroid. To make it easier to traverse equipment(solar panels electric wires,etc), to explore and to mine.

Maana Electric should consider developing solar power satellites for the Moon and Mars. Surface solar is limited compared to sats that can be in constant sunlight and don't have to be landed. This is especially true for the Moon since polar orbiting sats can cover the poles with fewer sats and that's where the action is. Starlink on steroids would provide power, comm and positioning anywhere constantly.
