ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet gives a guided tour of the International Space Station’s exercise machines. Staying fit is important on Earth but even more so in space as bones and muscle are used less in microgravity and tend to waste away. Astronauts spend around two hours every day doing fitness routines.
The Space Station has three types of exercise machines: a treadmill (T2), an exercise bicycle (CEVIS) and a weight-lifting machine (ARED).
Thomas is spending six months on the International Space Station as part of his Proxima mission. During Proxima, Thomas will perform around 50 scientific experiments for ESA and France’s space agency CNES as well as take part in many research activities for the other Station partners.
The mission is part of ESA’s vision to use Earth-orbiting spacecraft as a place to live and work for the benefit of European society while using the experience to prepare for future voyages of exploration further into the Solar System.

Hello! I have a question, why you used cumbersome hydraulic device when you can use elastic band? There are a lot of exercises with elastic band that may substitute barbell.
@EuropeanSpaceAgency
@EuropeanSpaceAgency 6 лет назад
An elastic band will gradually loose elasticity. A hydraulic device can be regulated to give a chosen amount of resistance depending on the users' needs.

Question: Why not incorporate something more active in the loading tension for the running springs, adjustable so each member of the crew runs at 1G based on their body weight?

@fuckednegativemind
@fuckednegativemind 7 лет назад
L'accès à Cupola n'est pas possible lors de l'utilisation d'ARED, mais les autres machines ne gênent pas vraiment le déroulement de la vie dans la station.

J'ai une petite question : est-ce que vous pouvez suer durant vos séances de sport ? I've got a question : can you sweat during your sport session ? Go Thomas ! 🇫🇷
@cliveramsbotty6077
@cliveramsbotty6077 7 лет назад
yes, it is then reabsorbed by the ventilation system and recycled as water with 99 percent efficientcy. je suis desole mon francais 'est pas tres bon sur papier.

You are too kind sir! I try but still get put to shame by the perfect English I hear from the French people when I visit. The ISS has a climate control system that keeps the temperature constant and Thomas will be in top physical condition but he can still sweat - the moisture will get reabsorbed by the air system but he could also use a towel to catch the sweat. He will then place the towel over the air vent as it pulls the air in order to preserve the H2O. The station recycles all water so it can be drank again- including urine! Sorry if you already know this already I just got excited talking about the space station lol

Bonjour !
@EuropeanSpaceAgency
@EuropeanSpaceAgency 3 года назад
Thanks for your question! The differences in the harnesses are mainly for individual body sizes and there are differences between US and Russian harnesses. Furthermore the harnesses have evolved over time to become better (more comfortable) and they need to fit with the respective treadmill pulldown system. So plenty of little reasons, but most come down to the different cultures - US vs Russian - and evolutionary steps to make them as comfortable and individually-fitted as possible.
