Join ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti as she shows how astronauts on the International Space Station keep clean.
From soap to water and cutting your nails, everything is different in space. Samantha demonstrates her ways to ‘shower’ depending on how much time she has.
The astronauts on the Space Station spend as much time as possible on science. During her 40-hour working week Samantha runs many experiments from Italy’s ASI space agency and ESA, and takes part in even more from scientists all over the world.
Samantha is living and working on board the International Space Station as part of the six-strong Expedition 42 and 43 crew. Follow her Futura mission at samanthacristof....

Chetan Khalkho - Pfft. The ISS people have it very easy. Dirty is Frank Borman and Jim Lovell stuffed into a Gemini capsule in 1965 for two weeks, wearing pressure suits, in seats so small you can't even stretch out fully, pooping into plastic bags and stowing the poop bags wherever they could find room. When the Navy divers opened the hatch, the stench would knock them off the capsule. That's dirty.

@@SMHman666 Not a bad guess as to what was falling. It's just that vertical line of direction that keeps me stumped. Everything else we see in this low-gravity space (or no gravity?) does not move in a straight line, from top to bottom. Things (including people as they propel themselves around the station) move in a more circular motion and not in straight lines. There has to be an explanation.

loverlyme That’s SO wrong. You should study more, and I don’t have time to teach you basic physics and newton laws. Although just to prove that she’s in space it’s enough to see how the water doesn’t accelerate while falling but maintains a constant speed, like it would in space.

How is that possible in space... with no gravity the water should not run down at all, it should stay in place and float. The at 4:29 you can see a water drop from abover her to the floor... again it should not drop down but float. Someone explain how this is possible in zero gravity.

At 4:08 and forward you can see at least two droplets leaving the end of the tube. Both move in a straight line, one At about 45 degree angle to "down" and then after she attached the pouch to the wall one drop goes straight "down". The one that comes from "up" and hastily moves "down" is possibly the drop that went up in a straight line at 3:42. Then again, she is shooting off water droplets in all directions if you look closely, and they all move in straight lines.

what was that?? something was falling down at 4:28-4:29.... whatever it was. My question is, is it possible??

Considering how slow the fall is, maybe it's a piece of something that just rebounds off the ceiling

Not falling. Rather moving in a certain direction. Compare it with how fast a waterdrop on Earth is

I think its a free fall... No gravity acting on it,,, so according to physics - The particles attains a force ,,, it should move in the direction of force. (free fall)

There are touching videos where Samantha just arrived on the ground, and sitting in the chair in the steppes of Kazakhstan, sniffed steppe flower) This is the first thing she did on the earth, the smell of life. Symbolically. To tears. Я лично чуть не сорвался(

I read they have a suction tube made for male and female anatomy that they go in, and they have a sit down type toilet that has constant vacuum suction that sucks all the waste out to space where it gets burned up in the atmosphere

+European Space Agency, ESA But what about shaving? Most women on earth like to shave their legs and most guys shave their faces. I suspect you can't simply use shaving cream with a razor in zero gravity, or wax strips... So, how does that work?
@americanredneck357
@americanredneck357 8 лет назад
+banjerboefify I can't find the exact video, but Chris Hadfield made a video where did use a razor and shaving cream, but after each pass, he'd wipe it on a rag.

They should make the ISS a bit friendlier looking. It’s like the inside of a boiler room.

swallowing all that fluoride cant be good for you

+weepingod In a similar interview they explained that the toothpaste can be spit out into a napkin and disposed of, it's just a preference thing. And I'd imagine the actual toothpaste is non-toxic, much like the digestible children's type.
@blue3374
@blue3374 8 лет назад
+weepingod I thought of that too and also one of the major points of brushing your teeth is to get rid of germs and stuff which you spit out but they are swallowing all of that nasty stuff here
@krashd
@krashd 8 лет назад
+Lily Brown Toothpaste kills germs, so it doesn't matter if you swallow them, they are dead and will just be digested as protein like any that are on food or your fingers when you bite your nails. The reason you spit after brushing is because toothpaste is a cleaning product and not a food, it contains chemicals that won't really hurt you but they would make you feel ill if you always swallowed whole mouthfuls of them. I imagine the toothpaste they send up to the astronauts probably uses something other than fluoride or sulphide making the tubes more expensive but harmless to swallow. Space engineers solve all sorts of problems :P
