Space Weather and Earth's Aurora

Aurora are colorful lights in the night time sky primarily appearing in Earth's polar regions. But what causes them? The culprit behind aurora is our own Sun and the solar plasma that is ejected during a magnetic event like a flare or a coronal mass ejection. This plasma travels outward along with the solar wind and when it encounters Earth's magnetic field, it travels down the field lines that connect at the poles. Atoms in the plasma interacts with atoms in Earth's upper atmosphere. This reaction produces the colorful lights we call aurora.

Just saw auroras over south germany after this G4 solar storm, absolutely stunning and unexpected to see them so far away from the north pole/nordic countries.

Also crazy how it literally looks like it's from every direction. At least my dad told me that it's from every (well except one because one part of our plot has a building that is entirely covering one direction and there was nothing, also this was friday as well)

Such a large storm that it has reach that far and into the uk, if it's such a large storm is that abnormal behaviour for our sun?
@TrafficDE
@TrafficDE 3 дня назад
@@badgamer6977 No it's completely normal. The sun is pretty active right now due to it's solar cycle. The last solar storm this size that hit earth was in 2003. (2003 Halloween Solar Storms) No need to worry. :)

The best explanation of how auroras come to be, stemming from the 'solar storms' of the sun, very well done!

"What if...." it does. The internal solar structure theory expressed in this video is around a century old. Modern perspectives are necessary to keep from saying foolish things like "invisible shield" & "magnetic rubberband" when describing the geomagnetosphere.

Is it prominence or CME which causes aurora? I learnt that CMEs causes Auroras but from your animation it seems the event happening on sun is the prominence. Can anyone explain me?
@ayrapaanarjy8929
@ayrapaanarjy8929 2 года назад
Auroras are caused when solar wind (mostly consisting of protons) leaks into the earth's atmosphere. The sun constantly spews out at least a little bit of particles without any CMEs so arctic regions experience auroras many times a week. Large CMEs that hit the earth directly can cause major geomagnetic storms. A CME is caused when a prominence collapses and a large plasma chuck gets ejected. Often times this occurs at the same time as solar flares. Then there's also coronal holes which are regions in the sun's surface where solar wind leaks more easily (no CMEs required). These can cause minor and moderate geomagnetic storms and in some rare cases strong geomagnetic storms. The coronal holes can be seen from SDO's 193 Å wavelength images as black regions.
@Mr.PandeyRishav
