A new version of my recreation of the original Spaceship Earth. Thanks to new footage we now have a better understanding of every show scene, including the computer area. I’ve tidied up the video quality a little, but it is still very much of its time, as is the audio - although again this is the complete Vic Perrin (yes, Vic) narration without sections missing.

Is this a good representation of what the ride was actually like or are there a few scenes missing? I'm not criticising Martin's work but I thought the ride was slightly longer than 16 minutes.

There is one thing missing from the audio portion. In addition to "Schmeling is down!" and "The Shadow knows!" the radio clips also included Walter Winchell's opening ("Good evening Mr. and Mrs. North America and all the ships at sea. Let's go to press!") and there might have been one more. I distinctly remember the Winchell one the first couple years at least though it may have been eliminated even before the Cronkite makeover.

I remember being a bit unnerved by it the first time I rode it (Spring 1983). Especially with Perrin doing his classic "Outer Limits" style narration accompanied to those ghostly sound F/X and wavy projections of the cavemen. Perrin did a good job in a lot of projects but the Ray Bradbury script was just too highbrow in tone and the absence of a signature piece of music like all the other Future World attractions had didn't help either. The Cronkite version corrected this by giving Spaceship Earth its own signature song and theme, a more listener friendly narration that didn't dumb down the meaning of the original script but made its points better.

Thanks. They really let this go. Hard to believe the technology from 40 years ago cannot be maintained. No improvement investment needed, just upkeep.

I haven't been since 2001 sadly. 9 family trips from England between October 1988 and April 2001.

Amazing! I've always been surprised there isn't more video camera footage given that this version was still there until around May 1986, which was only 6 and a half years before we got our camcorder. (I'm a bit sceptical of Wikipedia which implies that they changed from version 1 to version 2 overnight, between 25th and 26th May 1986. I don't think that would have been possible because there are so many major differences between the two versions. Anyone agree?)

It definitely took longer than a night because they completely changed the left side of the computer scene and moved several things around as well as changing the audio in several places and the narration

Does anyone know why this version only lasted 3 and half years? Maybe some people thought the ending was a bit too "trippy" with that music, but I love it.

If you rode it in 1984 then you didn't miss it. This version lasted to 1986.

Did they change it slightly for the next version? I think so. We've got in on videotape somewhere, from February 1993. I know they gave him a much deeper voice in the Irons version.

Difficult to choose between Cronkite and Irons. Those are the only two I've seen incidentally. Visited 9 times between October 1988 and April 2001 (from the UK).

Yes, Nana Dench says “Rome fell” and the history lesson ends there as if it happened by accident. I prefer, “but these same roads were turned against Rome…”
