So is his face really messed up? Also, in this version we’re the astronauts part of the ride or just remnants? I noticed the person filming had to turn a light on to see them.

@@FilmThePoliceFTP i wish we knew for certsain what happened to the face of paperboy. He was to good to now only see its back. The astronauts were part of the first version of Spaceship Earth but due to sponsor changes and refurbishment disappeared from the ride. Yesterworld made a good video comparing all the versions over the years

So interesting how the some of the character voices haven't changed to this day.

The astronauts have been gone since the 94 refurb. The biggest part of the space station is still there (the part which housed and still allegedly houses the audio animatronic waving girl). It's in the darkness in the room with the hanging blue lights. On the wall right above you before you pass out of the 180 top room to the final part of the ride (with the lower "ceiling" and curtains/blankets everywhere.

@@FilmThePoliceFTP you are right, I was mistaken in what I remembered, it was the space station, not the astronauts, and it was at the exact point you describe. I think I have just seen so many older photos/footage here lately I incorrectly thought it was up there still.Thank you!

You can find pictures of what's left on Google images and there's a great wdwmagic forum post on the topic with not only several pictures of that but a link to a picture or two of what's behind the curtains on the descent (left over animatronics/figures from the post tomorrow's child ending when it was sponsored by AT&T of the video conferences). Kind of crazy they took that amazing ending and just covered it up.

I believe they were removed for the Jeremy Irons version. I worked Spaceship in 93 and they were still there.

@@HighCountryHigh could you see them without extra light before they were removed (IE around the time this video was made)? Or is this just because its an old camera with no external lighting?

@@FilmThePoliceFTP Yes, you could definitely see them. I’m sure they had some lights on them, but there was also a good bit of light coming from the planetarium projectors. Remember, you had been riding for like 10 minutes or so, giving your eyes plenty of time to adjust. I feel like they were one of the landmarks for evac up there.

@@HighCountryHigh got ya. One last question, the bigger satellite looks like it is very close to the ride path. Would i be correct in guessing that if you reached out you could touch/grab it?

They stopped being part of the story in this version, as they initially had dialogue when 180 top was just ambient noise the narrator and them talking on the radio. Once Tomorrow's Child was added the song drowned all their dialouge out but they were still there clearly visible and until the next update when the Jeremy Irons version was put it, they removed them and covered the space station because it was always just remnants of what was a failed lunar station scene in the first place. Their dialogue is in the 82-86 version although no decent videos of that exist and probably never will given the quality of cameras then.

The Afro lady was originally from the radio booth scene.

I believe it was supposed to be an illuminated cityscape outside the window of the communications center scene

@@ColeWalker That’s a tinted mirror with riders seeing their reflection. It’s better shown in some other home movies of Spaceship Earth from that era.

It’s in the room with the endless blue lights you see today while you’re going backwards.
