I have to admit, that is one luxurious capsule compared to the Soyuz.
@VestedUTuber
@VestedUTuber 10 лет назад
trha2222 I wouldn't say only 1960's technology, the Soyuz has been updated over the years with new versions. The Dragon V2 is still decades ahead, though. I was initially referring to how open and visually appealing the Dragon V2's interior is, though. It's like a modern-day Mercedes-Benz S-class compared to a Reliant Kitten.

VestedUTuber I'm sure all of that extra space is going to be packed full of supplies on a real mission.

I think Mr. Musk would be the first to point out that Soyuz is a thoroughly proven, reliable vehicle. Dragon II has huge potential, but it is not yet a working system. No need to denigrate the P-51 just because you've seen the unveiling of the F-86.
@BenEtherington
@BenEtherington 10 лет назад
You can't stand up straight in a Soyuz, and you definitely can't fit seven people in one. It'll be interesting to see how much room is left after cargo is strapped to the walls.
@JamesBrown059
@JamesBrown059 10 лет назад
trha2222 Wow there kid, I think you're on the wrong youtube video. Soyuz is still by far the best lifting vehicle we are in possession of. It uses "older" but proven technology and has yet to fail; that 2nd point is kind of important as humans being shredded on liftoff/reentry is not something pretty. Why hate? The Dragon V2 announcement is great for the whole planet! It means that we finally have a more efficient way of getting humans into space. Why attempt a horribad like-farm when you can just enjoy the technology on display?

This was around the time I first heard of SpaceX. I was reading an article a few days after the reveal. Fast forward to 2019, crew Dragon took an uncrewed test flight to the ISS and landed back on Earth. A successful mission start to finish. In a few months, they'll do the manned crew test flight beating Boeing!!

Looking at the comments and seeing some skepticism over propulsive landings, I can't help but wonder what would happen if planes had followed a similar line of thought. It's not a perfect analogy in a lot of ways but people could have thought: "why waste all that fuel trying to land a plane when you can just glide it in?" The answers to both is precision. You want to land precisely. Think of a jet that had to land on an aircraft carrier by only gliding. At such a limited angle of approach, the jet would most likely miss the carrier and over/undershoot. Commercial planes would need longer runways to accommodate glide-only landings and they would have only one chance to approach. The Dragon's controlled descent allows for pinpoint accuracy while still containing parachutes as an emergency. By keeping precision, SpaceX can operate towards true spacecraft reusability. It would be like landing exactly where you can service the capsule and launching again in a matter of hours.

Elon is proving to be one of the most powerful forces for progress and the radical advancement of technology the world has seen in a very long time. It saddens me that so many people that should be excited and thankful for what this man is doing, wasting time taking cheap shots at his public speaking skills...I actually prefer his sincerity and genuine approach over the fake and rehearsed hype like its a new samsung phone or something. Should people go troll Stephen Hawking and tell him to get a new voice because it makes him sound less brilliant? Ok, enough of that. Sexy looking interior. Never thought touchscreens would be introduced that quickly when it comes to spaceflight. I suppose these will recognize fingers even when it's in gloves and made more sensitive. I heard NASA cancelled touch screens entirely and instead went for physical switches again (for mostly everything) in their Orion module due to that reason and any mishaps that might involve something hitting the screen and activating something it shouldn't, or worse, disabling all control. Still, SpaceX came up with this and it's reuseable rockets amazingly fast. It looks like commercial spaceflight is taking over state-funded space programs rapidly. And with good reason, they don't have to deal with mood swings and general lack of knowledge & understanding shown by congress. I'm just glad Elon Musk chose to spend his money on this.
@utubesignupblows
@utubesignupblows 9 лет назад
Vib3s Yes that's why in this ship they doubled all the most important systems as physical buttons, as you can see, in the middle. I see no issue with a touchscreen though - it's probably made extremely strong that even hitting it with a rock won't break it, and it can be quicker to use... I guess it depends. But I trust SpaceX they probably did the research lol
@JBG-AjaxzeMedia
@JBG-AjaxzeMedia 4 года назад
well as he explained, all the emergency controls are still buttons in the middle so if anything touches the screen it shouldn't activate self destruct or anything. Either way, it doesn't take much for any sort of debris to interact with any of the functions if it hits it hard enough

Liam Dilley It's a huge problem with the aerospace industry because typically, companies there follow exactly what the clients requested. SpaceX builds it not because clients want it now, but because they bet that clients WILL pay for it, in the future.

Forget the technology problems, we have human problems that will likely take far longer to solve. The standard Jetsons/Star Trek/Lost In Space image of the future paints a picture of an enlightened sensible people less interested in personal greed and base instincts, and more interested in bettering themselves... it's taken a few decades to accurately plot the difference in the two curves, but it's pretty clear that we're not headed for any 'star trek' type of future :(

Clarifications for NOBOX7: I don't think I've ever seen so many stupid errors in such a short post. Officially, space starts at 62 miles, not 30. The ISS is at 200 miles. Escape velocity is 25,000mph, but Dragon is not attempting to go to interplanetary space beyond Earth's gravity. Dragon goes to ORBIT on top of a Falcon 9 rocket - the animation starts after separation from the F9 upper stage. Orbital velocity at 200 miles is approx. 17,100 mph. After leaving the ISS, Dragon does a de-orbit burn using its Draco control thrusters and falls back into the atmosphere. During re-entry it continues using its control thrusters to approach the ground with an accuracy of about 1/2 mile. By the time it is a few miles from the ground it has been slowed by air resistance to about 200 mph - Dragon 1 deploys parachutes and splashes into the ocean. Dragon 2 will have 8 SuperDraco engines, each capable of over 16,000 lbf of thrust. They use a hypergolic fuel (which does exist - it's been used for decades), a mixture of Nitrogen Tetroxide (N2O4) and Monomethyl Hydrazine (MMH). If Dragon has to escape from the Falcon 9 rocket on the way up, the SuperDracos can accelerate Dragon at 6g. Gravity on the way down is only 1g, although it's even less than that because of air resistance. The SuperDraco engines easily have enough thrust to slow Dragon for touchdown.

+Shlomo Hey thanks for ruining my fantasy with all that reality and magic... But a fair point, sure. I'll try to keep the fantasy alive by upgrading the wussy dual-Draco thrusters for a more powerful single Superdraco engine. What say you now?
@olekkuvppl
@olekkuvppl 8 лет назад
Well fuel would be the same or few hundred kg more to take in heavier engines and plumbing but your acceleration would reach much highier level with Super draco producing 73 000 N of force so for balance lets take 2 of them and cosine loss take 14T of thrust for easy calculation and 2.5T of start weight and 500kg at burn out you would go fucing fast form 7.7 to 11 km/s
@DKB-HI

The problem is a lot of people learn engineering with hopes to go apply for a job when finished. It shouldn't be so. You learn engineering if u have a passion to create stuff and u already have a shit load of stuff u made sitting around, then after ur degree is over...u don't go around looking for work, hell no, u sit and now smarter, create more cool stuff and more and more...if someone wants u to freelance, fine..if now u keep doing what u love and eventually ur come up with an idea that rocks and u make a couple of friends in high places that can help with funding and way to go. That's how to become an engineer with a passion to create not with the hopes of getting a degree to go work for someone else. Look at bill gates, if it was in the degree won't he have said, oh I gotta finish and get my degree and get my portfolio together and go apply for a job...if he did that there will b no microsoft....instead his passion drove him away fm school ..he knew enough already and bingo. So mr b passionate about making stuff.

@jamiegodman715

That is why NASA is working with SpaceX and several other aerospace companies. NASA wants to have SpaceX launch American astronauts on American made launch vehicles from our own shore. General Charlie Bowden is furious that the appropriations committee has voted to cut commercial crew again by $300 million, which will push back CCtCAP until 2018. This is when their precious SLS is supposed to launch.mbut in the interim we are paying Russia over $70 million per taxi ride for almost a decade. This is not the correct way to spend our tax dollars when it can be pumped back into American economy and not the economy of another nation.
